Final Fantasy Series - Plenty of memorable songs that captured the moods and atmosphere of the games that I played from the bunch (III/VI, VII, VIII, X)
Sonic - I agree, the songs really do fit the scenes and levels well. Red Hot Skull Mountain = One of the greatest video game songs EVER.
?
I haven’t played more than one game in other series so I can’t really come up with a third. But from what I’ve heard in Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow and the youtube vids of SOTN I’d consider giving them 3rd. Either that, or maybe the Tony Hawk series since 3 (and 2 for that matter) had an absolutely awesome soundtrack, and I really enjoyed Bayonetta’s OST.
Castlevania Final Fantasy(especially Uematsu’s stuff) Nier(I know it’s just one game, but eat me, the soundtrack is incredible)
I’m probably the only person who plays the Mega Man games on mute whenever I actually play them. The chiptune Dragonforce precursor soundtrack annoys the piss out of me.
Glad there is only few suggestions for megaman x. There is way better on the Snes.
Chrono series does need a mention (even though Chrono Cross has the same melody through out most of the soundtrack)
King of Fighters 94 - 2000 (Arranged soundtracks)
Donkey Kong Country just cause it hasn’t been mentioned yet
wow…i thought there’d be a lot more “marios” in ppl’s post. ok…
mario:
-lets be honest here…sonic 2 and sonic 3 had the best music. sonic 1’s first zone was dope. everything else doesn’t compare to a mario game. at least IMO
-super mario bros 1 songs have to be the most recognized video game songs on the planet only being above or even with the tetris theme.
-mario 1, 2, 3, world, kart, yoshi’s island and rpg (snes) is one hell of a back to back run, musically.
-there’s not a weak link in mario 3’s track list. there are weak links in sonic 2’s.
-there’s not a weak link in smw’s soundtrack. there are in sonic 3’s.
-smrpg’s sound track is dope as hell.
etc. etc.
donkey kong country series (dkc 1, 2, and 3)
-there isn’t a weak link in dkc2’s soundtrack. PERIOD.
-the bramble levels, the mind shaft levels, the castle levels, the bee hive levels, etc. shit on anything that was out at the time, iirc, and a lot of shit out now.
-dkc 3’s forrest levels (like the one with the giant saw) are dope.
etc.
final fantasy series (I-XIII)
-so at this point i’m feeling lazier than when i listed the stuff for dkc, lol. you already know how dope this series’ music is so i’ll leave it at that.
honorable mention goes to the sf series but i didn’t want to put it in the top 3 because ww music has been reused for multiple games, III was dope as shit but IV is weak in comparison. sf is def fourth on my list, tho.
smb2:
the cave song when you listen, then pause for a few, then unpause, etc.
smb 3:
world 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, and 8 themes, bowser end boss theme
smw:
forrest illusion, the song that plays when you fight reznor (when you’re running out of time), the theme that plays for world 8, the song that plays when you fight king koopa
smrpg:
forrest maze theme, mid boss, boss, marrymore, etc. etc. etc.
The last one was the hardest choice because Super Mario, Metal Gear Solid, Street Fighter and Earthbound could’ve easily filled that 3rd spot. The only reason why I chose Pokemon is because I played that game so much that all of the music is ingrained into my soul. I can hear some little kid playing the game and know exactly what town they’re in, if it’s a gym, pokemon, or trainer battle, and the version of the game solely on music alone.
