I don’t remember mentioning ST anywhere in my post…
As for marvel, yes I am going to be honest here, if you are bringing players exclusively to play that game and the trip is going to be time consuming and costly, I would probably advise against it. MvC2 is not a “serious game” at TGA and we don’t have any real top players besides Tony B. However if these gamers want to come and have a good time, get some laughs, and also play other games like 3s and CvS2 which are our top 2 games (I’m leaving out ST for myself since you asked me to) then I would recommend getting as many people to come down as possible.
Also your argument about marvel, although you may see a “big picture” kind of thing, is very skewed. First of all, ECC is THE major for mvc2, period. Everyone knows this. And at the largest major for mvc2 in the country, we only got 70 players. This is a far cry from the 200+ ECC was getting just a few years ago. This game is going down in flames on a rapid basis and losing serious players left and right. Most of the people who were around when the game was new have completely moved on to other things and/or other games entirely.
Since you’re coming to New England, I guess I should explain the state of things here. There are basically a few places still holding it down and having local tournaments every few weeks/months. One is TGA in Mass; another is GDT in New Jersey; and the third is Chinatown Fair in NYC. Out of all of these events, TGA always has small marvel tournaments but except for the low tier event held a month or two ago, the headcount rarely breaks 16 and the gameplay is hardly “top tier.” GDT has yet to hold a marvel event. And the past two MvC2 locals to be held at Chinatown, the CENTRAL POINT OF MVC2 FOR THIS ENTIRE HALF OF THE COUNTRY, were cancelled due to lack of interest. People literally walked off and went to see movies and eat instead of playing.
This is the state of MvC2 right now in the northeast of the US. Maybe it’s different in Florida and Virginia and Texas and Cali and Canada (although I went to a Virginia tournament just a month or so ago and nobody came at all) but HERE, MvC2 is VERY rapidly losing interest as a serious tournament game. Don’t get me wrong here, people like myself and Nestor and Tony B enter events simply because there is a high chance that we will break top 3 and get some cash out it. But none of us are practicing MvC2 at all and none of us are going to practice for this Team Hate vs Canada event. MvC2 is a joke game for 95% of us and we’re not going to start taking it seriously again anytime soon.
So the bottom line is, Team Hate and TGA would love to have Team Canada come down. Have some fun, share some games, some food, and get in some GOOD matches in 3s and CvS2. But if you are really in the mindset of getting Marvel-exclusive players to come down and drop a bunch of money and time, I think you are going to be disappointed overall.
EDIT: In reference to playing on cabinets at the Break, it is WIDELY accepted in the US gaming scene that besides MvC2, those cabinets are complete ass. Sticks get installed at angles, buttons don’t work properly, and all around those cabinets are a horrible gaming experience. Probably because these are the same cabinets used since the first ECC and they have never been rewired…just like at CTF…because the days of real arcades are going down the shitter. I RAN ECC last year and I have to admit that those cabinets for MvC2 and ST were complete ass simply because 1. controls were not installed properly or 2. the cabinets simply refused to work properly for some unknown reason. I would have to protest that the reason your Canadian players seemed to do so well on the sticks is because they are not all A-groove players…it is nearly impossible to consistently roll cancel or do an A-groove combo on the Break CvS2 cab, period. But I could be wrong as well. But take it from people who have played at the Break since day 1, those cabinets are ASS.
