When im playing SSFIV ( I main boxer ), I usually do a lot of poking and offensive pressure. But I play versus a Ryu or a Adon they do a lot of Cross Ups, and this is where I crack. I try sometimes to jump up when I wake up but I often times will eat a air to air, then I try heatbutt on wake up and I eat a sweep.
I know this sounds very character specific, but when I start getting crossed up I usually panic and crack. Any tips out there on how to deal with this?
now I dont know if this will work with Boxers dash, since its not great. But I like to forward dash when I can anticipate a cross-up attempt.
Another good option it to simply block; actually this should be your go to option. If they’re crossing you up then they’re close to you and that not where anyone wants to be when fighting Boxer. Often after a cross up attempt your opp will go for a low attack or empty throw. So OSing with :db::lk:~:lp: isnt a bad option. But I would probably just recommend blocking the crossup, anticipating a low attack, block low and wait for an attempt to punish a mistake or sqeeze a Head Butt in.
EDIT:
I dont know how the Newbie thread operates relative to the other threads but, often the mods would perfer stuff like this to go into the general Q&A thread
Thanks and yeh I need to work my defense a lot more. When I see someone cross up on me for some odd reason I just start to crack. Ive seen the foward dash used before but I wasnt sure if it was safe or not.
you can burn meter to dash straight out.
you can also ex headbutt out, but thats risky because some characters have a faster walkspeed and can catch up.
block, tech, and backdashes work well.
there’s no instant fix, it just takes practice.
but part of playing boxer is being great at defense =P
I’m surprised no one has said this yet.
Block. I mean, you’re going to have to learn it eventually. Just learn to block it. Otherwise people will know that you don’t block and learn to destroy you.

headbutt. ex headbutt. also for a crossup you have to block in the opposite direction- forward instead of back. be wary of ken’s crossups ans they can hit from either direction. for a normal move cross up you can also focus it and hit them with the focus when they land or absorb and dash back. the opponent may use a focus breaker if you do one of these so I suggest getting away and blocking. if they block the focus- ie you use one that does not break block- you can try for a throw, setting up a wakeup game. if this happens, try walking up and blocking. a lot of shotos are very very hairtrigger on wakeup srk and will just do it without thinking. since you will block it and you will be charge, you can punish it accordingly. there’s also the possibility of them teching the throw and resetting your momentum.
Another note on countering: Crossups involve jumps. jumps are dangerous. balrog’s pokes are amazing. so it would also be good to learn to just use a normal to anti air. if there’s one that set’s up a combo on counter hit then even better. I think st hk is his standard hooking normal punch that works as an anti air.
if you have ultra, ex headbutt xx ultra 1. be careful and look out for safe jumps. you can save yourself from an accidental whiff here by fadcing it on block provided you have meter and dashing back. backdashes are punishable too though, so they might throw something big if they are inclined to do so.
the aforementioned method with a focus attack will not work with a tatsu crossup. if you do it by mistake backdash quickly and get out of the way, especially with ken who can ultra off of it.
The other type of crossups are FAKE crossups. I do this a lot in st with chun’s j lk. These are done so that the opponent reacts to it like a crossup. If it is completely whiffed, there’s a good chance you’ll be sitting there holding forward or something- which leaves you open The other type is using something that is typically used for a crossup, but choosing not to do so with it. This is incredibly tricky and seriously screws up an opponent’s blocking. Mixing this up with a regular crossup often nets big combos.
all in all, youd be best either blocking or anti airing it with the appropriate move given your meter resources and the type of crossup being used. And hey, you got training mode with record. Record all of ken’s/ryu’s crossups and learn to hit him for them.
osiriskidd and TNB beat me to it. Like they said, in that situation it’s best to either anti-air (in Boxer’s case obviously headbutt) or block. The simplest method is usually the best.

an easy ways is just learning how to block it.
The problem with crossups aren’t crossups. Its ambiguous crossups. Got to the know the spacing where a character’s move will crossup or not. Easier said than done vs shotos since (to me) they have the most braindead normal move crossup mixups in the game. select mk for back, select fp for front.
And for Balrog. Please do yourself a favor and almost never do HB on wakeup vs jumpins. Seriously.
Thanks for all the help guys, Im sorry if my question(s) at times seem very noobish and waste of time. I NEED TO LEARN HOW TO BLOCK and a lot of times I forget this and start mashing db and lp + lk (panic mode). Often I lose because im mashing.
Thanks agian. Now im off to Rog forums for more specific questions!
If they are doing a crossup mashing LP + LK won’t do anything because they aren’t going to throw you from the air. They might occasionally do an empty jump into throw, but you should be able to see that coming fairly easily.
Seriously learn to block, once you get blocking down you can mess with stuff like EX dashes to avoid crossup, but learn to block first.

Forgive me if this isn’t logical, but would it be safe to try absorbing with a focus and then forward dashing immediately after?
I used to live by that until I leveled up to players that believe it or not go at the front more than the crossup. As a beginner you get tuned to blocking the back all the time then better players try to exploit this ambiguously.
So anyway, that works if your sure its a crossup but note that depending on the matchup, you could be totally vulnerable after the absorb…matchup/character dependent. The key here is that this might be a tool, but not the ONE answer for all your problems.

Ah, thank you very much. I’ll have to keep all that in mind. Luckily, I haven’t advanced anywhere online to where I’m fighting the more experienced players. In fact, I only recently got back into playing SSFIV about a month ago. Most of my time was going to 3S on DC. I really want to get better at SSFIV, but I’m hesitant to get into online because I know there’s a lot of really good fighters out there.
Adon has a particularly nasty ambigous cross up on wakup. There is this range where depending on when he hits mk it will either hit in front or back, so it is a 50/50 guessing game if you choose to block, because you cannot react to it.
Ryu also has an ambigous jump in MK that hits in front, but if he choses to hurricane kick instead it hits you in back. Tough for me to react to when I am not on point.

I was trying to train with Makoto earlier and found out she has a j.mk cross up as well. I tried turning it into a combo but only got as far as 3 hits, as usual. Guess I have to work on my timing or something.
