"They like me, they really really like me!" (The Ryu Thread)

Any advice vs Dhalsim?

We need an opening post for Ryu like the one in the Cammy thread. I’d do it myself but I know I don’t have the credibility to even attempt it. And I just don’t have the time. Where’s the Ryu love at!? I need something to raise my spirits.

So I played an old friend today and he OWNED my ass with Ken. I swear Kens Fierce DP is able to hit full screen if you try to jump over his FB. WTF!? And then theres his fucking tick throw piece of shit. I swear whenever I see him come at me with a jump in LK I know already its over. He goes right into the knee bash and when I fall out of it hes able to cross over and rape my asshole.

What do I do if he jumps over my FB with a LK. Is there anything I can do before the knee bash if I can’t do a DP in time to AA his jump in?

And after I fall out of the knee bash??? Reversal???

I’ve tried reversals soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo many times and I SWEAR TO GOD…when you don’t really need it to come out, it comes out everytime. But when you NEED the fucking thing to come out it doesn’t!!!

I know everyone is tired of the complaining about the online experience…but *UCK! This game makes me want to slit my wrists sometimes.

^ If your friend is jumping over your fb’s and punishing you, you are a) being too predictable with them b) you’re not positioning yourself properly in comparison to his ken. A) can be solved by being less predictable… use your fb to keep him at bay but once ken catches on he’ll simply jump over and smack you in the face… so also use your fake hadou, whiffing s.jab or whiffing s.strong to bait him into jumping, if he does, you’ll recover and have ample time punish him with a dp and follow up with a wake mix up. B) is more difficult since it is something that takes practice to learn. You basically want to be towards the end of Ken’s jumping arc… also try to stick with jab hadou’s in this match up. If you are finding it hard to hit your buddy after he jumps over a jab hadou, try buffering the dp motion towards the end of the hadou animation and then piano the punches… you want to hit ken out of the air… it doesn’t matter what version of the dp you get just as long as you get it out before he hits you.

The same advice I can give you for ryu’s reversals: buffer dp motion before you land from his knee bash throw and piano the punches… just make sure you know from what side your friend is attacking since he is going to mix you up. Unfortunately, I too get in that situation a lot times and I too find it difficult to get out of Ken’s knee bash throw loop… All I can say is try not to get into that situation in the first place.

Thanx for the input man. I know I make a LOT of “newb” mistakes and end up being predictable at times…I think it’s the frustration that gets to me. I’ve had a really bad week as far as STHDR goes. I think I need a break…~with Borat accent~ NOOOOOOOT!

What’s the story between Ryu and Ken’s Hadokens? For the longest time, I believed that Ryu’s Hadoken takes longer to startup than Ken, due to NKI’s frame data site:

**But having checked it again, it shows Ryu having 12 startup frames and Ken having 14 startup frames. That’s less frames than Ken, which means Ken’s Hadoken starts up slower than Ryu.

I’m thinking it could be an error on NKI’s part, cuz it also shows Ryu having more recovery frames than Ken, and I KNOW Ken recovers slower than Ryu. So basically, with the frame data the way it is now, Ryu’s Hadoken starts up faster and recovers slower than Ken’s, when I always thought it was the other way around. It always “felt” to me like Ryu starts slower and recovers faster.

It’s not an error, that frame data is correct. Overall Ryu has a better fb because it has less start up frames and Ryu’s overall fb animation is one frame shorter than Ken’s.

The latter part is the reason why you feel Ryu recovers faster. As to why you feel that Ryu’s fb starts slower… I really don’t know… in my experience, I’ve always felt that my fb’s come out faster than a Ken’s (if done at the same time) if you happen to be in a scrubby fb contest.

I realize this is trivial, but I’m going to ask it anyways: What should my game plan/goal be when fighting Sagat (and don’t say “to drop his health bar to zero”)? Also, where do I want to be distance-wise in this match up (that is, where is my optimal fighting distance I should be holding throughout the match?)

Anyone else besides me have some problems with Cammy? Seems like between the spinning knuckle and hooligan, she has options to get through your fireball traps. And I can’t count how many times I actually see crouching fierce moving into the hooligan combo and I still get thrown…

Cammy is my main :wgrin:. When playing against Cammy, you cannot go into FB rapid fire mode even if you mix your FB speeds. You need to add a pause/hesitation here and there to really mess up Cammy’s Spinning Knuckle or Hooligan timing. So its NOT the speed of the FB, but the pause/hesitation in between the FB is the KEY to mess up Cammy.

Hm… Why am I telling people how to beat myself…

Think I’ll try that. Thanks.

I’m still clueless about what I should be doing vs Sagat though…

LOL I remember saying 3 shorts into super wasn’t possible, but I hadn’t tried it in awhile til today. I easily can do it now dunno maybe my super motion has gotten’ super fast. The input I do is d+short, neutral short, immediately after you do that in other words FAST, qcf, d+short,df,f+any punch. I’ve been able to land it quite successfully more so than in the past which sort of blew my mind. I guess practicing the standing short to crouching short to super really paid off in the end. I can only do it when I’m on the left side of the screen though I think I’m just slightly faster with the joystick when I’m on that side, or it could be that it’s a Hori EX2. I’ll just have to wait and see when I get my SFIV TE stick if I can do it from the right side since from that video up the other day the guy said the EX2 stick is stiff.

3 shorts into super actually connect?
I could do 2 or 3 shorts into a super and it never connects for me…even with crossup short short super.

Its weird cuz i could do short short super with ken with no problem…the last short always cancel into a super and hits, while with ryu the opponent can block even when i cancel the last short into a super.

Yes, it connects sometimes, and sometimes not. I assume it’s probably cause my input is not timed well, or wrong inputs. It’s a booger to pull off for one that’s why I said I’m only able to really do it fairly well from the left side of the screen. The way it looks, is like in this video. And yes this isn’t hit connected it’s just a reference to show you the way the 3 short kicks are suppose to look.

If you have any, knowledge or advice, on if this one is possible in this video do tell, NKI said it’s done from a kara cancelled low kick to a back jump, but I just don’t see how that is possible (He is probably right, but I have a feeling my hands aren’t up to the task, getting to old). You’ll see what I mean when you see it in the video… And yes I know these are old turbo videos, but I’m still playing the HD-Remix version.

yeah Im able to do 3xshort into super just like the video…also 2x or 3x Cr.short into super…but like I said…its blockable…I dont think its possible to combo unless the opponent doesn’t block the super.

What does this Ryu player do @0:56 of this vid:

It looks like he does an air tatsumaki but I’ve never seen one like that. It could just be a short tatsu and me eyes are fooling me.

Ryu short short super will only combo 50% of the time even if executed perfectly

If you do it using the kara cancel method, it’ll never combo. If you do it the buffer method, it’ll combo.

Short tatsu into throw.

Your eyes have bitch slapped you. Yes…it’s a short.

EDIT: Dayum Shinto got to it while I was typing mine! Hahaha…PERFECT!
