These old movies had much less cuts and the sound effects were from the swords actually hitting eachother, not overdubbed on top.

Just because the soundeffects don’t sound over-the-top doesn’t mean they haven’t been added later. Most soundeffects you hear in movies were done later in foley. The best ones are the ones you don’t even notice.

you can take this a step further. most sounds are re-dubbed after shooting the scene, vocals and sound effects are tracked seperately.
