I be careful with s. HP/f. HP because he can grab your limbs with an SPDs.

EX Command Grabs, EX Green Hand and KKK Lariat beat meaty attacks. Like suggested before you can just throw his ass.

If you know your ranges, you would only be throwing out HP and f+HP at the extremities of their hit boxes, and I do believe HP is pretty safe on block at full range. If you can bait Gief into throwing out Green Hands to get in, or even jump then you will win, because you can definitely punish his mistakes for more damage than he can punish yours.

And he can’t Lariat for meter from across the screen either.

Thought it would be good to post video of the match up being played.

i got blown up in consecutively by giefs in a philly tourney and they made that match feel hopeless.

I’m thinking of maining Dudley later, so I’ll chime in my thoughts. I do believe this match-up should be played similarly to how Balrog fights Zangief, even if Dudley’s normals aren’t as good. As others have said, I agree that pokes, footsies, and knowing the range of your hit box data on your punches is extremely important. Zangief has amazing priority on his grabs and it wouldn’t surprise me if you got SPD when you extend your hit box with any punch (provided the grab is done earlier enough). Patience helps, rushing Gief down I don’t think is the best idea. lol

we all know giefs pokes n chops are epic. its all about dudleys normals

Honestly I agree that this MU is 5:5.
Now Elf vs Dud… can say 6:4

I actually feel this matchup is in Dudley’s advantage. As people have written earlier, you come far with s.hp, f.hp and u2(aa). If u punish their jumping be ready for some crouching pokes and greenhands!

U1 a lariat whiff today. It was awesome!

Had this match last night. Thought I’d upload it as I think it shows a few basic ideas of do’s and don’ts. And yes. I got destroyed the 2nd round and made some horrible judgments on his grapples. But the 1st and 3rd rounds I handled him very nicely.

space him and stay just out of poke range. counterhit s.hk xx ex mgb ftw

i think you made some pretty poor decisions in general vs this gief. he was mashing out ex hands like they were free. near the end of the last round when you got the jump in (which really should’ve got crouch lariated), you went for tick throw instead of just completing the combo ftw (c.lp, s.rh xx duck upper xx super). I’m honestly surprised he wasn’t mashing 720 at that point.

I liked the full screen p lariat punish with ex mgb. gonna have to remember that.

noodleman summed it up pretty good. You jumped at him a LOT. A good Gief would of punished you every time. Don’t feel like you have to go after him once you have the life lead either. Let him come to you and punish his jumpins with standing fierce. You missed a lot of big punishes on all his whiffed/blocked green hands as well. Keep in mind that those are all hella negative.

I u2 a whiffed larriot today. it has a deceptively good distance against it. the vacume effect is sure to get some oos and aahs.

EDIT: you can do that up to 3/4 screen away with ducking – U2 on a Punch lariot ON REACTION. Kick lariot still possible with good reaction relexes. but still if your reaction time sucks, its not easy to get baited due to the distict sounds zangief makes.

what I found out about this MU just on a happy lariat gief… is that if they lariat and your close enough to be hit by it if you throw out standing heavy P. it will either trade or you will be hit by lariat so in that case standing heavy kick is better used for insanely close lariats… if they are too far away ducking to uppercut works also. if they are mid distance standing Heavy punch. I never use foward heavy punch because sometimes that ends up losing for i have no idea why so I either use standing heavy heavy kick “close distance”, Standing heavy punch “Mid distance”, ducking uppercut “far distance”.

One more thing if I ever want to bring pressure on a gief player I always go for the safe target combo and that’s it cause getting slammed by gief sucks alot.

You only really need two buttons for this and that is HP (fw + st) and his medium kick anti-air. keep him at bay and if you’re feeling dangerous go for a neutral jump on his wakeup to bait the grab then punish accordingly. Never ever do MGBs unless in a combo or your ass will get grabbed.

Yeah, the match is just extremely hard for me. I’m absolute terrible on PSN. I just can’t nail 90% of my combos or my reactions online. So yeah, I did decent with some things.

I appreciate the criticism guys. Hopefully now that I’m settled at this new apartment with internet with a whole hell of a lot more upload speeds I won’t have ridiculous internet lag. My last internet provider had AMAZING download speeds, but the upload speeds were capped way below even 1 meg. Which was insane.

Psn… is just terrible. I feel sorry for anyone playing a high execution game/character on psn.

When a good Zangief gets a command grab knockdown on me, he gets his safe jump-in on me and it’s hard for me to escape. That’s just the only thing I have trouble fighting against Zangief. I’ve finally got my footsies game up, this was my worst part of my game.

Zangief would have to be a complete retard to use Lariat against Dudley other than as an AA. So U1 is a waste of time against Giefs with a brain.

And of course, like the Abel match up, if you get knocked down you are actually fucked.
