THEM'S FIGHTIN' HERDS! A New Four-Legged Indie Fighter - Crowdfunding is Live!

We now have Rainbow Dash’s replacement, a Longma. Also, the Steam Greenlight voting is live. Source: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/them-s-fightin-herds/x/2716630#/updates

I had no idea until now. The speed of R34 artists never ceases to amaze.

I never would have guessed a longma for the 6th character. Her playstyle sounds pretty awesome, like RD but with explosions and flames instead of lightning bolts and tornadoes.

Sorry to bring up the past, but I’m just curious. What in the hell made these developers think they could make a game utilizing the My Little Pony characters with the intent to sell it, and think Hasbro wasn’t gonna come down on them for it? Like did copyright laws mean nothing to these devs at the time?

They weren’t planning to sell it. It was supposed to be a free fan-game.

it doesn’t matter. companies have come down on fan games regardless of whether they were non-profit or not.

if you make a game that infringes on copyrights you either make sure nobody knows about it until after you’ve released it into the wild or try as hard as you can to make yourself unreachable by the long arm of the law.

anyway i would like to propose a logo change because i keep reading it as “them’s fighting heads”

There’s lots of free fan works that get cease and desist, but there’s also a lot that don’t. Nobody gets cease and desists for fan art, and it’s really rare for fan-fiction. Fan videos and games get more cease and desists, but it’s not universal. Hyper Dragonball Z is still being worked on to my understanding, and there’s lots of pony fan videos out there.

It wasn’t a great idea, a lot of time was wasted, but you can see why they might think they could get away with it.

I’m sure plenty of groups are still trying to make fan games of their own. It’s just whether they’re popularity stays below the radar that determines the chance of a C&D.

Related to the current game, they have added stretch goals as well recently.

Also, there’s at least one donation drive being held here as a livestream with some giveaways and SF4 gameplay (I think he said there’d be some Skullgirls gameplay too).

Stretch goals seems a bit optimistic considering the money influx has died down the last few days, and kickstarters have been known to go into that pattern and not pick up untill the last couple of days, so realistically they’re not even sure the project will be funded

I would have imagined bronies largely able to fund this kind of project so my only guess is the majority lost interest the moment it stopped being a MLP project, which is fair.

This places this game in a very weird position where it doesnt have a dedicated audience and the majority of fighting game players will hate it on principle. Not looking good, too bad for them.

Game’s been Greenlit! Plus I threw in my pledge this morning. I’ll up it if needed.

I think they wanted stretch goals so that people knew what to expect should they manage to surpass their initial goal, and give some incentive to go beyond just the initial funding.

Hard to say about the brony thing. I haven’t kept up to date on the happenings of that community much lately, but it generally was not unusual for them to work wonders in terms of numbers of people at events and in terms of funding for charities and such. I imagine that at least some people in the MLP community are still salty that Fighting is Magic got shut down and/or think of TFH as a separate indie project (which it is, being an entirely new IP). I would hope that the majority at least recognize that the new IP is actually a really cool chance for Lauren Faust and the dev team to create something of their own without overhead restrictions. I’m also hoping that there is still enough interest in games like this from the FGC. Fighting is Magic was very niche to begin with, but garnered enough attention to impress a few people with the alpha demo at Evo one year. I think a lot of the indie games like this one are a good chance to bring new ideas to life, and to introduce new people to the fighting game genre itself, so I really hope it does well in the end.

Hopefully people can further spread the word and continue the momentum of the crowdfund. It’s almost to the 50% mark already! Also, they’re doing some special rewards for referring other people to back the game. And there’s goign to be a stream later today (7:00pm EST, 4:00PST) at their twitch channel.

Progress report: Only $11,000 (rounding down) is needed for the game to get funded. Now’s the time for hype.

Edit: FUNDED!

WOOT! Super happy for those guys. It feels good to see an indie team make it, especially for a promising fighting game, and especially for a team whose original project got axed by C&D. It’s been an awesome comeback so far, in no small part thanks to Lauren and Lab Zero. Can’t wait to see where it goes from here. The campaign’s still not over, I think we’ll reach Linux/Mac port stretch goal, not so sure about 7th character but I can hope! GO FOR GOAT!

Apparently Omari never leaves his house unless he has long sleeves and long pants on!

Seriously this is awesome. It’s always great when an independent project gets support and the creators get to exercise creative freedom away from the shadow of a board of directors.

Does that fool have his ps3 down into the carpet? Tsk tsk.

Well, we’re at 566K with about 4 hours left. Goat confirmed, plus story and stages! And the campaign is still going! Also, playing TFH via twitch is happening now: http://www.twitch.tv/manesix

So how many of you put down money for the beta?

I did, the sooner I can try this out the better imo. Hopefully I’ll have some local friends to try it out with as well. We still have quite some time to wait and watch the progress as it comes. Speaking of which, Paprika’s backstory is awesome. Also, from one of the streams that I originally missed, it sounds like projectiles will still probably have hurt boxes (ie, they can be hit with normals, if timed well enough). Always thought that made things kind of interesting.
