Life is not zero sum. Knowledge is cumulative. If there is an afterlife, your knowledge is the only thing that comes with you. It is the only thing that is permanent here. It is the only thing you can share freely and not have less of.

Obtaining knowledge is the key to a satisfying and meaningful life.

The glass is twice as big as it needs to be.

And while I know I posted this quote a few days ago, it really belongs here…

“I have come to believe that the world is an enigma. A harmless enigma that is made terrible by our own mad attempt to perceive it as though it has an underlying truth.”

-Umberto Eco

I’ve never agreed with any sentiment more. While I rage about lots of things (democracy, the word ‘widget’, and guys with pins in their hats), I always go to bed at night thinking about how hilarious life is in the first place. It’s just a bunch of forces and stuff. That’s it.

/end thread, it’s over. it’s fucking over

i think it means that everything adds up to nothing!!!

Dementia. Alzheimer’s. Brain-Damage.
Knowledge isn’t permanent here.

If there is an after-life which “you” would go there? Pre-dementia? Child-you? Middle-age you? None of them would be the real you. The real you would be dead.

Do you play SFIV? I’d love to play you on PSN sometime, I bet you’re hilarious. You always come up with the best one-liners.

how the hell is that avatar even remotely ok?

LMAO its so hilarious though you dolphin loving pervert

If I was a woman I think I’d have a complex about never being able to give birth to one.

I also love the fact that my avatar is a really just a combination of the two avatars that I’ve gotten semi-famous for rocking. Drill dick and dolphin fucking.

When you’re born into the world, you have nothing, and life owes you NOTHING. Theres no such thing as fairy tales, santa claus and miracles, etc. Life and reality is harsh and cruel. You have to MAKE it work for you, or it’ll always work against you.

Basically what i’m trying to say is— You have to get off your ass and put in the hard work to make life good, FORCE it to give it what you want. If you’re not willing to do that, you’ll have nothing but unhappiness, depression, and mediocrity to look forward too.

…that and posting threads like these on SRK.

Life is only shit if you ALLOW it to be.

To a degree. Lets not get too idealistic and act as if will-power is supreme…

Actually, in terms of how much you enjoy life, it is all in the head. You can’t keep bad things from happening, but you can train your outlook, so you don’t melt over the non life-threatening things.

Few problems with that. First you need to know certain mental tricks in order to overcome the “illusions” of suffering. Second you have to be able to believe those tricks.
Third, there are some things you can’t trick yourself out of unless you become delusional.

So, sure, we can change perspective and view some bad things as good, and some suffering as “helpful” but we shouldn’t fall into the obscene trap that says every form of suffering can be overcome if you implement the right trick…I hate the idea that some people have when they compare life to a painting, “oh the closer you are the worse it looks, but if you go back far enough you’ll see how good it actually is.” I’m sorry, but certain things are actually just suffering and shitty and going too far back is missing the point (holocaust, black plague, etc).

So we can’t really say “life is only shit if you ALLOW it to be” because whether you can Allow it to be or not depends on your conditions, education, environment. A person who was raised to be a stupid farmer may not be able to ALLOW himself to overcome some trivial problem simply because he never learned the mental or physical tricks to do so. A monk who was trained to be constantly aware of his emotions and environment could have the ability to ALLOW himself to do so…etc

So that’s one problem. Not everyone can “allow” themselves to view life differently or change their lives actively.
The other problem is, sometimes life just is shit and no amount of effort or change in perspective will change it. For example, the aids infested kid in africa dying of dehydration and then sold into prostitution, etc…
