Think of guys like HBK, Bret, eddie, jericho, mysterio

Those guys were/are all main eventers in the land of giants

Think about hbk’s and bret’s attitude back then.

Vince hates yes men.

The group of guys that punk calls friends is pretty eclectic

Standing out, scratching and clawing your way up the ladder stepping over dudes saying you can fill that spot

Attitude era sounded ruthless

Stone Cold wasn’t really a big jacked up dude either and he made Vince enormous amounts of money and might be the most popular wrestler ever.

Oh Stone Cold, stunning everyone and shooting people with beer.

What did Triple H mean by that line exactly? I must have glossed over that part.

And is it me, or did Cena seem like kind of a dick on the DVD? I may be interpreting what he said the wrong way tho. Just seemed that way

It was when they were going over Punk’s first cash-in for the World Heavyweight title and how creative didn’t really push him much. He said something akin to how the man makes the title and not vice-versa. That first run I think he was right; Punk wasn’t ready for it, but beyond that…ehh… However, besides Punk’s friends and family, Hunter came off as pretty honest and straight-forward.
It may have been the editing, but Cena came off as a real douche. I don’t really hate the guy, but his segments paint him a lot differently than how the 'E tends to portray him. I’m guessing that is probably closer to the actual Cena than the ‘never say die’ super goody-good he’s normally advertised as.

I also like how Zack Ryder credits Punk as being the one who helped him get his push, rather than Cena.

@Pimpus: I kinda agree with Triple H too then, I didn’t think Punk was quite ready after his first cash-in. He was pretty bland and run of the mill around that point. He didn’t come into his til the second cash-in and subsequeent fued with Hardy.

And it feels wierd with me agreeing with HHH on anything, and even wierder that the guy you were expected to be a dick NOT be a dick, twas Cena this time. Almost seemed like Cena didn’t think Punk was fit to even be in the WWE, let alone a champion. I have a newfound respect for HHH, he kept it real

Very well put-together documentary all around tho. Woulda killed for them to interview Samoa Joe or Jeff Hardy, but I understand why WWE didn’t allow it.

Wow, you guys are really putting a lot of stock into two Cena statements.

He said he didn’t think Punk looked like he was the greatest thing to ever come to wrestling since Sliced Bread #2 but he was still good. Then he complimented the shit out of him.

lololololol. niceee

Like I said, I could be wrong, but Cena IMO seemed kind of dismissive about Punk in the DVD. Not so much what he said, but HOW he said it. I plan to watch that part again later tonite and try to understand his point of view better, just seemed like a dick in the first viewing.

He was just explaining that there was so much hype behind Punk from Heyman and basically everyone on the internet, that what Cena saw didn’t stack up to that huge expectation. It was an honest and to me, acceptable reaction.

From my viewpoint everyone came off great on the DVD. Even Triple Burial.

Yeah, I just fast fowarded to that part again. It wasn’t so much what Cena said, it was HOW he said it and his facial expression. He had that “who the fuck is this lil nigga” face. lol. But that part just bugged me for some reason.

I get where Cena is coming from now tho. It was one of those ill-concieved pre-judgemental things, which most people (even me) do from time to time.

Just watch the Punk DVD and it’s absolutely amazing. My respect for Punk has increased 1000 fold. I really disliked how Michael Hayes came off in that DVD. He loves to have Vince’s cock in his mouth. It was unbelievable to hear that no one took Heyman seriously because he was a yes man like everyone else.

Haha, yeah, of everyone Hayes comes off as the most penisfaced if you know anything about the wrasslin smark stuff. Still nothing he said really was overtly assholish. I mean Paul E isn’t exactly the saint of heavenly behavior.

Another thing that got me thinking about the Punk DVD is Daniel Bryan mentioning there are ton of guys in the back hoping they won’t get booked in Superstars so they can do nothing and collect their check. Since Mason Ryan, JTG, and Ezekiel Jackson haven’t been used in forever I’m guesses those are the guys he’s talking about.

One other cool thing about the DVD was how Punk admitted that the Straight Edge Society gimmick was basically his twisted portrayal of Jesus Christ. I mean, most of us knew that was what he was doing, but he gave us the confirmation we needed. Punk cut some of his best promos (IMO) around that time. Looking back at it, I’m suprised WWE let that cult angle go as far as it did. Somewhat risky in their PG environment

I’d love to see a character like that brought back, only guy I think of currently that could pull it off is probably Sandow.

The craziest part was him and that old lady calling him the devil and that he was going to hell. Not a lot of stars would be able to handle being called that and keep the SES angle going, but he embraced it. Punk was happy that he was pissing people off and pushing boundaries and that’s what he does best. That’s one thing that is missing, someone legitimately playing to the crowd and controlling them. Yeah, Cena does it but it’s the whole “I do this for you because I’m the good guy” thing, but Punk can legit control people with what he says and what he does.

I was wondering if they were going to make it all the way to that great MitB match he had with Cena and I’m glad they did. Punk controlled last summer completely. That shoot was serious as hell and HHH said it best that that was his “it moment”.

Speaking on the Cena stuff, I can understand what he meant too. Cena said what people do think. There are a lot of wrestlers out there in all divisions and there are many talented ones. Some of those wrestlers get too hyped up before they move to a major wrestling stage, so much that they can’t fulfill that amount of hype in their debut and that gives them a bad first impression. Cena didn’t mean that Punk sucked ass, just that he was over-hyped prior. Punk wasn’t going be his greatest at the start, but that hype made WWE people think too high on him at the beginning. Punk had to rise up to what he is now, not saying he wasn’t good, but that sometimes it takes a min to get the ball rolling in major stages. Punk started off good and kept getting better and better.

The DVD did make me regret not really liking WWECW though. It was actually a good show, looking back, but it was always known as the “C” show, but with such good talent; then again WWE treated it like a “C” show and that crappy “December to Dismember” PPV didn’t help it either. I did not watch that PPV, but the reviews and ratings just made it sound like it was a horrible, mess of a PPV.

I’m no Cena fan, but his comments on the DVD were completely honest and understandable. I feel like Cena haters can be just as dumb as his fans; interpreting what he said as “douchy” is a hell of a projection.

It’s amusing to learn that Punk signed his deal during the middle of the MITB show. How last-second was that? And I wonder whether Cena was in the room to agree to do the job?

While I enjoyed the DVD, I would have loved if they went beyond just scratching the surface of his struggles in WWE. For instance, who were the members of Creative that thought Punk shouldn’t even be on OVW TV, let alone WWE TV? We need to know the names of these people, to permanently shame and mock them. (Besides Vinnie Mac, obviously)

We know that Punk was jobbed out a bunch shortly after Heyman left, but that Shawn Michaels, among others, vouched for him, and the WWE thought a “straight edge” wrestler would make for a good public image after the Benoit tragedy and the perception of wrestlers as all being roid monkeys. Obviously, they don’t touch upon any of this.

However, what about Punk having heat with the Undertaker at one point, and getting buried for it? Surely, they could have addressed that?

Punk having heat with the Undertaker? What’s the story behind that?

I remember hearing about that Undertaker story with Punk awhile ago. Something about Undertaker not liking the way Punk dressed and Punk not showing him the proper respect. Correct me if I’m wrong, guys. It was awhile ago when I heard about it

But yeah, its evident in the DVD that WWE didn’t wanna expose the guys who hated Punk backstage. Maybe they’ll save it for Punk’s next DVD…but probably not. Wouldn’t be a good look for the company’s “image”

Now that I’m reminded of that… Was it when they where overseas? Now I remember some of this.
