I remember reading a great little thread featuring s-kill on alt.games.sf2 about the origins and the meaning of the term “meaty”. People were arguing about whether it had a specific meaning, or if it was just a synonym for “well-timed”.
People are just stupid and stupidity is a sin that which can never be forgiven or healed. Footies and spacing is merely moving your character around. Any jack off who says its anything more shouldn’t be talking.
Footsies makes sense. It has a broad yet concrete definition. I think what confuses people is the fact that the subcategories of footsies are basic ideas applied to footsies. For instance, you see baiting in all instances of the game, via frame-traps, wake-up games, as well as poking. Only one of these examples fits under footsies, but they are all solid examples of baiting. Someone needs to Venn Diagram this shit.

“vortex” can actually be a useful term, because I thought it was dumb as hell when I first heard it, too.
It’s more than just “some mixups”, because everybody in the game can do some mixup on a knocked down opponent, but not everybody has a set of mixups that on success lead directly back to the same set of mixups outside of the corner.
“footsies” is a nebulous term. That does mean it gets abused because it contains so many meanings, but that doesn’t mean that it isn’t useful. Try “composition” in photography.

Have you ever seen anyone win a major tournament use anyone thats not god tier on point vs a god tier win? Like having Cammy on point vs Sent? Or Cyc on point vs Mag?
“Footsies” is a useful term and everyone deep down understands it even if they can’t articulate it. For example, instead of saying “Daigo beat Choi at EVO because he outzoned him, baited crouching medium kick and punished with sweep, baited sweep and punished with sweep, and baited neutral jump over fireball and punished with fadc -> walk forward -> s.hk twice,” I’d rather say, “Daigo beat Choi at EVO because he had better footsies.”
ill give an example. in SFIV the metagame was who can land the ultra most often. if your character couldn’t combo>ultra than they weren’t as good (exception was akuma cause he was just good). so basically anyone who can combo>ultra easily were usually better overall than someone who can’t (note:usually). in SSFIV ultras were tone down quite a bit so while it’s still good to have combo>ultra it’s not as important anymore as it was in SSFIV. SSFIV seems to revolve around who has the best normals.
Not to sound Hitler-esque, but if you see someone using a term like footsies wrong, and you actually know what it is, I think you owe it to the community to correct them. Not being a prick about it, but saying, “Hey, just fyi, footsies is actually THIS…”

I agree with you Docta. But the worst thing about this community is that not many people will like being corrected. If someone does try to correct someone the other person just thinks they are being insulted. I think a lot of people wont correct someone because of that and then there are the people that just dont care, and cant be bothered to take a minute to explain something to someone.
