The Warhammer Universe Ultimate Thread

No prob, I’m an old head at 40k/Fantasy. I been playing since 2nd edition 40k back in the early 90s. The current edition, 4th, is good, yo just have to play agianst guys who want to have fun. You can really cheese 40k, make it all about going for the V and rolling dice and beating up other people’s plastic soldiers. I treat it like an 80s action movie, I want lots of explosions and gun fights, and I don’t really play to win. There is so much dice rolling, you really can’t feel bad if you lose, it’s so random sometimes.

Another cool thing to look out for, if you manage to stick with the game for a while, is Apocalypse. Your standard 40k army is 1500-2000 points. Apoc is designed for games of 3000 and up and has a whole new slew of special rules and things. The game is designed for people to basically put eveyr mode they own on the table and blow crap up. Can’t wait.

I also plan on playing 40k as a Chaos Chosen Hawla at me when that happens.

If you also want to save a lil cash i went and bought a Chaos Battle Force box online for a pretty sweet deal and you shave off a lil in savings.

I also got the chaos codex but some jerkass took it so i now i gotta buy a new one. ill wait till the termies come out then ill probably get it.

Has the new Chaos Codex come out? I’m hearing more details about it on other forums, and wanted to know if it was out already.

EDIT: Downloaded the Mark of Chaos single player demo, haven’t played yet.

How’s these things for a start on the Fantasy Battle TT game, birthday’s next month, and looking to get these items to start:

Rulebook
Hordes of Chaos index(they have a starter set with a box of marauders and a box of warriors that I’m looking at)
Liber Chaotica Complete(just for personal reading on the Chaos Gods)
Citadel Superglue & Plastic Glue
Model paints(not sure about the Mega Citadel paint set)
Achaeon, Lord of End Times(sp.) miniature
Crom Miniature

also, what about the Beasts of Chaos? Should I get the mega set of citadel paints? Anyone recommend some model/miniature tools?

Dan?: I think you got me confused on one thing, I was talking about Fantasy battle, not 40K, though I’m looking at that too.

Gotta have this. Definitely a no brainer.

Having the codex and two boxes of core troops is obligatory. You won’t get far without them. Just be warned though: warriors are elite infantry in terms of price and ability. Elite infantry, no matter how good they look on paper, are paper tigers. 7th Edition, and 6th before it, do not look favorably upon the elite infantry. Marauders are cheap and effective. I’m not saying don’t take warriors, just try not to overload on them(as cool as the models are).

Warhammer has some of the best fluff for any game ever. Great choice!

Gotta have it.

The Mega Citadel Paint Set is, while cool and all, just too much. No painter is ever going to need THAT diverse of a pallette. I’d suggest getting some core colors, maybe a few random ones, and then maybe even doubling up on things like chaos black, chainmail, blood red, etc.

Everybody needs a wicked rad lord. Archaeon is, by definition, wicked rad. Whether or not you use him as your own hero or as the actual special character is up to you. A lot of more veteran gamers tend not to use special characters. As cool as they are (even I used them once) they tend to be looked down upon, and seen as more of a ‘newbie’ thing. This is because they are usually very effective, though the special characters often have really cool backgrounds so it’s a shame they get such a bad rap.

Gotta have a hero-choice. See above for special character/normie discussion.

Beasts of Chaos are generally considered to be a little behind the power curve. I’ve only seen them hit the table a few times, but they seem to be pretty effective. They definitely give shooty armies a bit of trouble because of all their skirmishers. To be honest though, I don’t know how the ‘mix and match’ goes between the Hordes and Beasts books, I’ll have to look around.

For tools, you’ll want a decent pair of clippers, some plastic and metal glue, some exacto knives, a decent set of brushes, and a nice place to paint. Gotta find that zen when you work. Take it from me, it’s FAR easier to shell out the money and buy the boxed set than paint the 20 some odd buggers that are in it.

BTW im getting my Chaos Battleforce painted by a friend who plans on starting an Eldar army which i shall in turn purchase for him.

ill post pictures up of it as soon as i turn premium and my entire army is completed.

I’m in the middle of painting an Orcs & Goblins 2250 army right now for Fantasy. My Eldar army got suped up after the Eldar Codex release a few months ago. I fucking love Warhammer.

The Grimgor 'Ardboyz army in the Storm of Chaos book is bullshit, though. The Black Orcs are kind of lame.

Gonna just get the mark of chaos collector’s edition

EDIT:

@Dan?: Didn’t know you were on dude, had a question for you. How do campaigns work? I know I"m way too green to be thinking about Nemesis Crown, but I’d still like to know how they work. Do you have to accrue points over several games(like tcg tournaments I used to play in)?

I’ve got a small OnG detachment. Green is da best.

The SoC lists are pretty broken, from what I can remember. I haven’t seen them in a long time, but I recall being pretty much offended at everything I read.

The Slayer Army, Archaeon’s Horde, Errant Army and Lorthern Sea Guard being the worst offenders.

I’m working on both my Imperial Guard and my Empire. So…many…humans…

Oh, and Apocalypse is going to be the greatest thing to happen to 40k in years. I haven’t been this excited about a release in a long, long time.

The Lothern Sea Guard sucked because of the before the game shooting after that it was dead if you got it into hand to hand. It was not broken so much as unfun to play against. We have some slayer haters in my group but they play Vampire Counts and only because slayers eat undead for lunch (take that 20 man unit of black knights). The only list I would call OTT is the flying circus daemonic legion which is frustrating to play against (unless you play the Brettinnian RAF).

40K is dead to me, doing exactly the wrong thing with the new Chaos codex put the final nail in the coffin.

Anyone get into the age or reckonning beta? i signed up for it but i never got in. im hoping they do another wave of testers cause im itching to try the game out.

I got into the beta, but I’ve been playing my 70 mage on WoW and haven’t had a chance to try it yet.

Grrr elitericerocket, I’m craving to get into beta -_-. Anyones, for TT players, what are the most popular played armies that you’ve seen? This isn’t just for Fantasy Battle but 40k as well, just curious to see what most people are playing these days.

Me chaos all the way, even if they get nerfed which i heard was the opposite in their newest codex, im a sucker for being the table top villian.

Never too green for a campaign, man. Campaigns are a great way to meet some vets, get in a LOT of games back to back, and quickyl get a hang of the game.

GW has basically refined it down to something like this: Each player has a Login anda code at the website. You play a game and report the result, win or lose you earn points for your side by reporting it (clearly winning earns more, though). If you know the other person’s code or vice versa you can confirm it and all that jazz. You earn MORE points these days by writing “fluff” or background for each report, basically a mini story, when you send it in.

GW tallies things up, shows leaderboards and a campaign map/statistics. It’s good fun. Even though none of it really matters in an OMG WUT IZ GUN HAPPIN 2 DA EMPIRE?!??! sort of way, it is cool to see how it plays out and how the armies do.

40k: Space Marines. Above and beyond, Space Marines. They are the most popular army in the entire scope of all 40k games. I read from a financial report a year or two ago that Space Marine products alone make up 40% of the company’s income. Coming in second place is (gasp) Chaos! Spikey Marines!

Fantasy: More of a mixed bag. Chaos is really, really popular. Wood Elves and Bretonnia are really popular too. It’s much more evenly spread in Fantasy.

I’ve been out of touch with the 40k world for a while. They’re improving Chaos? Holy shit man. I knew GW did some retarded things but those Khorne armies were fucking RETARDED.

And after seeing the Terminators I laughed at every player that said my old edition Bright Lance was retarded. And apparently the Star Cannon needed to get tuned down. Give me a fucking break. Loved the Psychic Hood too.

I really attribute to the fact that Fantasy has a much older and more mature userbase. The game doesn’t have the same ‘atchya!’ advertising that draws a lot of the younger players. Let’s face it, 40k looks cooler in many cases. Those tanks are really detailed, those races are really exotic. There’s something to Fantasy that’s a bit clich in that they’re a lot of the same things you’ve seen from Lord of the Rings already.

Then you add in the fact that Fantasy is a bit more complicated to play and I think the average age group separate. That said, I have seen plenty of deviations in Fantasy, I know lots of guys in their late teens and early twenties that play Fantasy, but that seems to be almost 99% of the 40k crowd around here.

Edit: What did you think of the OnG 7th Ed. Armybook? I fucking hate the fact that the goblins are 3 points now. Also, what do you think of Black Orcs? I can’t seem to make a list where I like them. I just need too many infantry as O n G to stand a chance.

They are actually taking what was an interesting list and turning it into a bland list. Jervis’s MO appears to be “Lets drag everything down to the level of Kroot Mercenaries” instead of “Lets upgrade all armies with options that make them competitive”.

Fantasy’s rules are just as unclear and crappy as 40k’s. What Fantasy has a huge comeback factor and some armies do not get their groove on until late in the game. There is no Nidzilla/Drop Pod Space Marine/Daemon Bomb/6 Falcon Eldar army that would do alright if a special needs chimp played them. You can make a SAD army or a 2nd generation Slaan skirmish horde but unless you know what to do with it you will get your ass handed to you.

Yeah, 3 points may sound expensive, but Iren, listen: 2 points for a T3 S3 creature? 2 points?! That crap is ridiculous. 3 points for Goblins seems like a pretty good call, as an Empire player, even after the new reductions in tha army book, I pay 6 points for a T3 S3 human. Granted, he gets 1-2 more LD and a bit more WS, but goblins are still extremely effective for their points. People still win tournies will all gobbo armies. I think vanilla gobbos are a little more nerfed than they should be, but when the dust settles they’re still effective.

Blorcs are…a difficult topic. I plan on making my OnG army to play at 2500-3000. I want a blorc unit with about 20 blorcs in it. I just can’t imagine fielding them at lower points since they’re so expensive.

Orcs are the bread and butter of 7th OnG. 6th was all about gobbos, but 7th is the edition of the Orc.

JJ’s new design philosophy and the issues with the new Chaos dex I’ll get into later when I get to work.

Ok so the last time I played warhammer was back when the chaos dwarfs were playable. use to play lizardmen cause I started them on the starter sets with the brittanians.

the question for u guys is how much will it cost and how hard will it be to get back in the game? Looking at 40K and i like what i see, I want to try and make a nice sized space marine army but dont know any good sites or stores. A little help to start me off would be great.

thanks in advanced.

Most armies are gonna average you about $300. It’s not hard to get back into the game if you have an opponent to play against to learn all the new rules. 7th Edition WHFB is MUCH different from the 5th edition of yore, in a lot of ways.

For Space Marine info specifically, you can’t beat www.bolterandchainsword.

For general WHFB and 40k info, www.warseer.com is king.

For buying mini’s, try www.thewarstore.com or www.chaosorc.com, I use the latter quite a bit.

Chaos Dwarves are still playable in fact the army is one of the meanest there is. Underpointed Hobgoblin, foot, cavalry, and bolt throwers = Powerful annoying list.

It depends on what you want to play so far as cost, in the US there is a large tournment circuit independent of GW (thank God) that allows Non-GW models. I have a freind that stocked up on Russian Zombies for his VC army (10 bucks for a multipeice kit of 20 figs was a steal) I myself have converted Confrontation and Starship Trooper mini’s to use. So you are not as limited in your choice of models as you are in 40K, you can use other compnies like Old Glory who sell figures 10 to a pack for 1/2 the cost of GW.
