Man if Street Fighter IV came out today without any history the character design’s would be the most embarrassing things ever (and most of the new ones are anyways). Mortal Kombat’s still are. That’s just the genre really.
Chun Li is really a painfully stereotypical cheesecake design, Capcom knew this as long ago as A1.
P4A does slightly better because its cast is picked from a recent RPG and thus mostly vaguely coherent and modern rather than the usual collection of archetypes and oddballs, but even then Naoto is fairly silly, Kuma is…Kuma, and all of the P3 characters are sufficiently out there that people make fun of Mitsuru and Akihiko’s outfits in the game.
Some of the character designs in AH3 are kind of bad, but that’s because they have bad colours and other purely aesthetic design issues rather than being girls. Even some of the characters that are more mature and might have mainstream appeal like Zenia and Scharl have that problem.
“Anime game” is a nonsensical term. It’s only used when people are trolling, being idiotic, lazy or trying to divide the fighting game community. From the outside looking in, drawing a line between Persona and King of Fighters is ridiculous. No one outside of a very small group can tell the difference between Vergil and Yu, or Chie and Sakura. This is just the negative effect of anonymous trolling seeping into the bloodstream of a scene that’s about competition, not trying to find an arbitrary difference between games with characters that do martial arts and hurl powers at each other.
I hope the future of the FGC is free of foolishness like this.
Exactly. I play Akihiko and that dude is manly as fuck. However, I try to not let aesthetics interfere with my enjoyment of the game. I will play almost anything that is put in front of me, and have no problem playing as female characters if the playstyle interests me(SF’s Juri/Chun/Makoto, KOF’s Vanessa/King/Mature/Shermie, UMvC3’s X-23, SG’s Cerebella/Peacock/Parasoul, Tekken’s Julia/Asuka and VF’s Aoi are some of my favorite characters).*I tried to give Arcana a chance, I really TRIED, but the game makes you not just *look like a creepy weirdo, it makes you feel like one as well
I know that this sentiment is rare, but I feel people really need to just shut up and play what they like, and stop feeding into this “us vs. them” mentality. So what if your game isn’t an EVO featured title? Or that the stream monsters talk shit whenever your shit is on stream? As long as you are showing up to tournaments, going to locals and trying your best, isn’t that all that should be needed?
TBH, i think that the only reason why marvel and VS feel different than GG and the others is simply due the push block, the games are basically similar on all the aspects minus the preasure only because the push block actually changes how this one is used on those games.
This is so damn funny considering who is the character designer.
Then you are one of the few, btw, how do you call F/UC?, it has all of the features minus air dash
I never felt like a creepy weirdo playing Arcana Heart. I was too busy having fun. That in and of itself was not the issue. The character designs were just shit. Uninspired, boring, pandering, and just bad. Anime is anime. Thing is that they knew exactly who they were pandering to, what market they were in, and how to craft it as a business. There was no global market in mind with that I suppose. I was excited for a character or two in AH2 but that novelty wore very quickly.
I mean really you couldn’t have one sit down session and ask whether or not anyone the game didn’t have to come from middle school, have a lesbian crush, or made the most god damn obnoxious noises when she was being played?
oldschool_br, if the primary determinant of whether something was called an “anime” fighter was how it looked, SF alpha for example would very easily be considered one.
nope. neutral is obviously very different, especially from marvel vs gg etc.how pressure flows, even pushblock side, how mixup regarding high/low/pressure recycling is is quite often different. obviously they have similarities, and one could make a list of subgenres in which marvel/VS were next to gg etc, but the differences are major, just like how SF and KOF are different. pushblock is only part of it.
nope. you are obviously unfamiliar with people who actually play such games using it positively etc. obviously there’s negative usage, but there’s real gameplay reasons why some people like persona/mb but dont really want to play KOF.
IMO you can call Anime Fighter any fighting game with a strong anime influence in it, in graphic style, music and even dialogue. BlazBlue, Arcana Heart, and obviously Persona 4 are the best examples. And for me it isn’t an insulting way to call them, that’s just retarded.
I mean if we wanna get technical Fatal Fury and Art of Fighting were the original anime games. As far as games that are primarily anime inspired in art and story.
I’d think Kamui, Clarice, Elsa, Petra, Scharl, Weiss, and Zenia fall outside those criteria, actually. But for what it’s worth as poverty as AH is if they went outside the theme it’d look even worse if it was competing against non-niche casts.
Most of the AH1 characters besides Heart are voiced by people no one has ever heard of so they’re going to sound a bit shit regardless. (once again it would objectively compare worse if you had dudes or were aiming for something that requires more acting skill)
Examu did what they had to and aimed for a niche style that they could at least manage passably rather than aiming for something grander and failing spectacularly.
That’s kind of the problem I have with the character designs because they look really generic to me. None of the characters really pop out as characters I would wanna play design wise except for maybe Mitsuru. Otherwise it just looks like characters out of a typical high school anime that happen to be in a fighting game. I prefer more eccentric character designs so I’m fine with the stuff in games like 3rd Strike, Guilty Gear and Skullgirls.
Oh I acknowledge that, but at the very least even if they’re generic they’re normal save maybe Teddy, but even he has purpose as contrast. Maaaaaybe Labrys.
It’s the one fault I hate acknowledging of Melty, gameplay is fantastic but character designs are ho hum. Extremely ho hum.
LOOK OUT IVE GOT PENNY LOAFERS WITH YOUR NAME ON THEM.
As said before, if SF4 was called anything else and didn’t have a dozen previous games, the thing would be laughed at for how generic it’d be. “Do you wanna pick generic karate guy or generic karate guy’s practice partner?” Like, looking at Viper and Juri and even Abel makes looking at nearly the entire remainder of the cast painful. Rose looks, at best, passable, Gen looks generic as all hell (even 36 Chambers called and said you look outdated), and the original 17 (outside maybe Bison’s three henchmen, because they’re all manly as fuck) look stupid compared to, well, practically anything original in the last dozen years. Really, I can’t get over how dumb and dated Bison or Gief or Blanka or T.Hawk or Dee Jay look.
With Persona 4, I don’t mind it, because at least the characters look somewhat modern. If the characters all looked super crazy, why would that be? They’re high schoolers. I don’t need them to wear 83 belts or half a pair of pants like what would happen if you played a Final Fantasy X fighter. But if you DID play a FFX fighter, those designs would fit, because it’s a FFX fighter. SF’s shit doesn’t make sense.
Guess it comes down to this: If I see designs, I want them to fit that world. Ryu walking around in his PJs makes no sense. Chun walking around in that dress as part of Interpol makes no sense. Yosuke, however, wearing a school outfit in P4U? Makes sense. Twelve looking like a goofy weapon? Makes sense in 3rd Strike’s setting. Some of MK9’s design even makes a little more sense now that we’re seeing everything in that world, although the entire game doesn’t make sense so oh well. Pandering designs make no sense. At all. They’re just there because the designers are perverts and the people they know want the game are perverts. And titties sell.
tl;dr - Make sure the designs fit the world (crazy or not), update if you need to, and don’t throw in pandering for the sake of pandering because it’s JUST AWKWARD.
