It would surely be easier to find people in your region if the game just was able to show the flags and the pings on the results screen on PC. But the servers are so fucked up recently it looks like they don’t care anymore.
If the move they’re frame trapping you with has enough range it will hit your backdash and score a counter-hit. Backdashes are better when you read a throw, but if they read your backdash you may eat a CC into a full combo.
You’ll get CC’d if they press a crush counter button, otherwise you’ll be counter hit into a standing reset. You may as well just block and be prepared to delay tech.
If they’re frame trapping you you won’t be able to move while in blockstun and it will be easier to connect any button they press after that. The best strategy against frame traps is to just block until you’re pushed out of range and they have to commit to a dash or a slow long range move to hit you again.
You can use back dash like that, but I’ve had more success using it as a bait on the attack. Think Zangief full super etc. So with Ryu I’d do st.mp - back dash. Although situations arise on defense where it’s a good option, Again if you block a Laura Elbow and she has full super, I’d back dash there for sure. It does have it’s uses, but it’s dependant on you recognising the pattern.
Another example I can think of is low level dictator players will do a combination of blocked normals that ends in scissors. If you back dash there you can whiff punish the scissors with sweep etc…
Situational, but the answer is yes, back dash is still viable.
I remember when I thought Akuma was a stiff looking mofo and I didn’t think his moves would flow well. However, now i’ll be pretty sad when he doesn’t have baller resets, combos, and okis like that if/when he makes it into SFV. I’m sure ya’ll disagree, but fuck he looks about as fun as ever.
Backdashes are great as long as you are not predictable with them.
I was fighting this Super platinum 11K Bison player with Chun Li and i noticed that he will backdash on wakeup every single time i would throw him. In the last round of that fight i did a forward throw, dashed forwarded then did my B.HP. I got my CC to hit, i juggled with a super and took the game.
They can be a nice option but don’t abuse them or make a pattern out of using them.
