They said that Obama ruined the internet with net neutrality because it gives control of the internet to the government, and the government can censor whatever they want with it in place. Repealing that will fix that, according to them.

They’re completely ignoring stuff like the fact that Comcast was caught throttling Netflix’s speeds until they paid up and how forcing people to pay for fast lanes is gonna destroy many people’s livelihoods who rely on the fair and open internet to survive.

To play devils advocate, I think the reason some people are against net neutrality, is they don’t like the government having a say in how you do business. It’s a more common view point among older people and conservatives. People tend to lean more conservative as they age.

There are some limits you want to place on companies. Like child labor laws. Then there are anti-consumer, scummy things like throttling, which suck, but to what extent are outside forces allowed to influence company policies?

ISPs are kind of an oligopoly. In my experience, I see the most scumbag tactics from ISPs when they are the only option in town. That’s when you start seeing data caps and upload throttling. Look up Cox Cable, they are one of the worst ISP I can think of and net neutrality has no impact on them. In a lot of places they are the only broadband ISP you can get. I’m glad I live in New York, where there is competition for ISPs that not even Comcast has a data cap here, but in other regions it does.

I think having more competition and expanding the US fiber infrastructure will have a more positive impact on the internet. In fact, in an attempt to pull people away from Verizon FIOS here in NY, the ISP Optimum has a deal where they pay your Netflix Subscription.
