Yeah that’s really what I meant, more like actual alpha counters. A lot of situations in this game come down to 3 options, mash jab, keep blocking until you get mixed up and hit with easy mode combos or v-reversal which isn’t HORRIBLE, just feels a little not worth it sometimes.
Most of them work well. They’re just not brain dead and they can be baited and punished. Seems right to me. The game doesn’t need anything else to encourage down back. People just have to learn how to actually block and stop hitting buttons all the time.
V reversals are the one mechanic I felt they got too soft with. Even white chip feels meaningful now, but V reversals take away a chance to use V Trigger. You’d think it’d work in more situations for what you burn
Some V-Reversals could definitely be a little better, at least in terms of push back so that even if they block you’re actually getting some breathing room.
I think it’s better to start out with V-reversals being at the lower end of power then adjust as needed than have them dictate the pace of every round.
My friend wised up to me V-Reversing Nash’s Moonsaults, and he grabbed my shit. I have no idea how, but he did. Nash’s EX Moonsault has misleading recovery animations.
It seems like movement v reversals let you do some nutty things that the more basic ones don’t - like they have v different usefulnesses for different bros. How do you guys feel about ryu’s? I haven’t found an obvious “damn that’s so cool” use yet
There is definitely a reason why every characters v-reversal is not the same.
I don’t think this game benefits from having a universal defensive technique that is ever better than a character’s unique options (AA’s / reversals). It seems like the game is really trying to encourage you to learn to read your opponent and commit to good reads, both offensively and defensively.
Anything that simplifies a read into just a reaction or even worse a set play technique I think is “bad for the game”.
I mean, is there one character in the game that has a meterless universal antiair for example that is more or less good in all situations?
This I don’t know, with a 2 bar character you could v-reversal 3-4 times a round if that’s all you planned to do with it. With how hard some characters have to work to get in with certain matchups, saying “hey lets neutral” three times seems pretty good. I think people are still really iffy on setups that aren’t from their own character and don’t really know good times to v-reversal (or never think about it at all more commonly). I could see V-Reversal being a much bigger deal for a character like Mika as time goes on.
There are just some players you can never condition. They’ll keep trying to “crouch tech” while I’m sitting here poking them with my superior Vega buttons.
