Yeah Ono is better than me I’d be using my broken English for chain swearing at my impossible to please fan base.
I’m all for criticizing Capcom when the grievance is legit (I.e. netcode situation). But bitching about and singling them out for a fan contest? Fuck off
The only time where i would say a fan contest is exploitation is when they declare no winner/ 1st 3 places deserted and screw anyone from getting their prize, while the contest runners stiil get to claim ownership over all the works submitted to do as they please.
“Oi that bitch mashed Ken DP! Damn what a retard! I wish I would win with mashing Ken DP like that… where did my monitor go? What game am I playing? Why isn’t my character moving, shit is bugged.”
Place a varied amount of hiccs inbetween these words.
To be blunt, SNK/KOF probably wasn’t considered newsworthy. The only people that even noticed were probably predisposed in favor of SNK just producing more content.
In comparison, you can find a fair amount of negative coverage on multiple sites in regards to Ubisoft’s partnership with HitRecord, both for when it solicited fans to submitted art and music for Beyond Good and Evil 2 and again when it solicited fans to submit music for Watch Dogs: Legion. That was despite Ubisoft paying the winners, because it was still calling for unpaid spec work (as anyone who didn’t “win” wouldn’t be paid for their work.) There were also a few complaints about how low the payment was, with some further claims that HitRecord had a history of exploiting younger and less knowledgeable people who were trying to break into the industry.
Last year, multiple sites covered the allegations that Chucklefish exploited unpaid contributors during Starbound’s development.
You can also see plenty of comments from people in the industry advising the hopeful to not get involved in such efforts. Admittedly, this isn’t just established people trying to look out for newcomers, they are also trying to protect their own futures. Unpaid spec work also conflicts with efforts to unionize the game development industry.
