I know you’re joking, but technically speaking being gay is abnormal, seeing as how heterosexuals are many times more common and are considered the “default”. Generally you assume someone is straight unless given a reason to believe otherwise.

Being gay is abnormal, but that doesn’t make it wrong.

Normality is an illusion, and sexuality is a construct. In ancient Greece “bisexuality” manifesting primarily in pederastic behavior was considered “normal”, and a ‘default’ behavior. People throw around ‘normal’ like it has value outside of statistics when it couldn’t be further than the truth, and it couldn’t be a greater demonstration of ignorance.

You seem to be attaching some sort of connotation to the word “normal” that I don’t actually have in mind. I literally mean it as a representation of what is most common or expected. Statistically speaking that average person, at least in the U.S., is heterosexual. In that sense homosexuality is abnormal.

If you really want to be that way literally every word and concept thought up by humanity is an “illusion” or “construct”.

Your use of ‘abnormal’ was about the statistical frequency of homosexual behavior in the US, in which case it was correct. His ‘abnormal’ in the context of his post meant something else. I know this because stupidity and statistics don’t mesh well.

But you are right, every word and concept is an illusion and a construct. A futile attempt at exerting a degree of control on reality, by the delusion machine known as the human brain. Which isn’t necessarily bad, if you pick your delusions thoughtfully. Pun intended.

This leads us down an unresolvable path Daemos.

If it is true that the human brain is a delusion machine, or that one is living delusionally, how would one know it? In other words, how could a delusional mind ever discern between reality and delusion?

If one has the ability to ever ascertain the truth, then the brain or mind, or psyche, whichever word one wishes to use, must not inherently be a delusion machine.

Unless of course you are defending a paradox, or perhaps arguing that an outside agency could reveal the truth or perhaps remove the delusions from the delusional mind.

Otherwise I don’t see how a delusional mind can rid itself of delusions of it does not even know it is delusional, because that self-awareness would be the antithesis of delusion.

You can’t get rid of delusions because that is the function of the brain, it generates interpretations (i.e. delusions) and picks the ones that fit its reality (what the 5 senses tells it) best and runs with it til something better comes along. Your delusions can become more and more accurate or less and less likely to be untrue, but they will forever remain delusions. I noted from an earlier post that you maybe into Soren Keirkegaard, if you are I recommend getting into Albert Camus (who was Kierkegaard’s spiritual successor I’d say), starting with The Myth of Sisyphus. Absurdism helped me reconcile myself best with the pitiful finitude of the human condition.

maybe so but there’s something called reason and most people can reason their “delusional” reality. when things don’t add up logically they realize something is wrong.

You can totally be self-aware of your delusions, and I think that is simultaneously one of the best and worst things a human can experience. Best because with that degree of self awareness you can make much more judicious decisions thus leading to potentially the fullest life experience possible. Worst because you inevitably become painfully aware of the limitations (and meaninglessness) of our existence in the silent universe. Ultimately though, reason, logic, the scientific method, technology, fight for you to find the most reasonable and logical delusions.

This is so beautifully ironic! In my experience it is precisely when one is aware of one’s delusions, that one also can become aware of an outside agency that is sentient and not silent at all. It’s only when one’s delusions cease interfering that one has a moment to be aware of other things.
