So this Men in Black/21 Jump Street crossover is actually going to happen…

So random, I’m all on-board

Ghost in the Shell

“You get an Avatar movie. You get an Avatar movie. Even YOU will get an Avatar movie. Everyone gets an Avatar movie!” -James Cameron

They should have casted a real Asian like Emma Stone for the role of Motoko Kusanagi.

Finally saw Creed and can say it was pretty good. Got a little teary eyed when the hype Rocky/Apollo music started coming on and can say it was worth it.

I’m not going to say Hollywood has a horrible whitewashing problem…no wait, yes I am. Hollywood has a horrible whitewashing problem.

The GITS movie better be in Japanese with English subtitles or we riot.

(I thought those needless Avatar sequels were confirmed years ago?)

Damn. I was somewhat hoping that GitS movie didn’t get off the ground. Well, that’s what I get for having hope.

Yeah, I just talked about this in X-Men: Age of Apocalypse on Monday. Hollywood legitimately still tends to be horrible about white-washing things despite America supposedly being “post-racial”–[insert eye roll here]–and Asian people still get it the worst of any “race” or ethnicity.

At least Jubilee is Asian…

Yeah, only white people tend to believe that we live in a post racial world. The word “post-racial” is about as white privileged as a word can be.

(Given I didn’t say it, it’s nice to see you back again, angryliberal.)

Yeah, Hollywood being a place that tends to create against its own “interests”, at least in terms of what actors and even a good chunk of the directors believe, is also part of what makes it so annoying and weird. I mean, Hollywood’s true interest is of course making money, but it’s just weird to realize that for how “liberal” and “progressive” the majority of the actors (supposedly) are, they tend to say (or at least have little clout in saying) how white-washed certain things become because of studio executives who are attempting to appeal to the majority of America (and possibly the world) or at least think they are.

It’s just like how a good deal of actors in Hollywood are openly not heterosexual in their personal lives, but basically have to give vague answers or outright lie to not sully their appeal and how sexuality that tends up in movies (or TV until very, very recently) tends to be either heterosexual or sexless, unless it’s either as a stereotype “gay best friend” or just an outright segregated “gay movie”. Hell, even that doesn’t stop Hollywood from white-washing things since I heard they did some white-washing of the main character in that Stonewall movie apparently even though that was already a “gay movie”. Not that “the gays” can’t be racist as fuck, but gods damn, that’s telling on a lot of levels given it’s based on a historical event that pretty much anyone could easily research if they actually wanted to do so.

I’m legitimately expecting Jubilee to either barely show up or die in the upcoming movie because of this, actually. Possibly both given the previous X-Men movies, especially the abomination that was X3, shows that the studio isn’t afraid to make named characters who were of at least in moderate popularity in the comics into utterly minor ones and then kill them off, possibly en masse, on top of that.

I mean, before Deadpool, Colossus was in X2 technically…for all of a minute. It’s even worse with Psylocke, who arguably shows up in X3 for even less time before getting wiped out by Phoenix.

That’s just somewhat par for the course with the X-Men movies outside of First Class being thinly veiled Wolverine movie, though. Given Wolverine isn’t in this, maybe she’ll actually survive if she has more than a minor role in anything given it gives them less incentive to endanger or kill off one of his adopted “daughters”.

I hope the movie includes that awesome lesbian sex scene in the original manga.

By casting ScarJo as Motoko, at least we can relax knowing Hollywood is actually putting in effort in this whitewash, not a shitty one like Dead or Alive and King of the Fighters.

The japanese love white people. Have you seen how white anime characters look?

Asian robot was already acting as Scarlett Johansson

So I guess it’s only fair that Scarlett gets to act as an Asian robot

anime nerds gettin up in arms over this. this is the least needed bitching since goku turned white. you can complain about the fact america has a horrible track record with animes but not with that shes white. since the majors race isnt fundamentally linked to the character. others in the group are…but hers isnt. its like when people bitched about goku being white…nigga he is a fuckin alien. so much else you can complain about…wrong actor…bad writing…but the race part is stupid.

also this is a big production…i dont believe a major studio has backed a project like this fully before…so of course they need a big star. who the fuck they gonna get xang xi yi? michelle yeoh…nah.

(They at least seem to have gotten an Asian guy to play Aramaki, so they haven’t totally white-washed things it seems. Still, at the same time that may make things even more jarring.)

Ugh. I’m too tired to be as indignant as I “should” be over this despite it actually not being Ms. Johansson that I was personally talking about.

That said, it doesn’t help that I really don’t know where to start with the implication that Zhang Ziyi or Michelle Yeoh are the only two Asian women in all of Hollywood, especially given the former doesn’t even act anymore. The fuck, maxx?

only asians who came to mind at the moment. i cant think of whos been in a starring role and could attract a group of people who have no idea wtf ghost in the shell is.

I don’t know Ghost in the Shell at all. I don’t care about anime, I barely watch American animated features. However, whether the race of the character is integral to the story or not, that’s not even remotely the point. Changing a character to white only continues to reinforce the idea that only white actors can draw a crowd, a self perpetuating system of ensuring white is the default in Hollywood. That’s the real issue here and it extends far beyond this movie. So I’m not up in arms because I’m a fan of the material, I’m up in arms because it’s these kinds of things being written off with excuses that ingrains this social racism in our culture. Also, the character’s name is Mokoto Kusanagi, there’s not a lot of wiggle room there for a white face, let’s be honest. You know what’s easier than explaining why this white girl has an extremely Japanese sounding name? Casting a Japanese actress.
