Just got back from watching Lucy
6/10
When it comes to the science, i would compare Lucy to the movie Hackers in quality of source material. Most of the science is not legit, and just tossing around jargon. Just like hackers, it overly tries to explain the complexities of their plot through “tech talk”, when in actuality it takes away from the movie more because you know what youre seeing or hearing is wrong. Hackers gets the pass on that because of when it came out, but Lucy has no excuse.
Its definitely a visual spectacle throughout the movie. Oddly enough, so was the recent transformers, but i didnt wanna walk out of Lucy, but i could almost barely stand the last 20 minutes of transformers, and just found it to be totally useless. Thats probably my bias towards superhuman movies though. lol
They had scarlett basically lose her humanity over time (well actually as soon as the drugs activated), and that was a part of the whole reason why people say she is a robot in reviews. I guess you could go 1 of 3 routes with her powers though. Either she loses her “humanity” because she understands everything, and certain things seem useless at her level of intellect. You could also go the route of her having more of an apprecation for everything, because now she understands all the complexities of it all, which you see early on in her transformation during a conversation with her mother. Or you can go the third way which is just put her as god status, and she feels what she wants to feel, when she wants to, which quite frankly should have been at 20 percent, but whatever.
Its not like Limitless at all. Limitless actually made you wish there was a pill like that to help you just be that extra bit better you could always be. Lucy is more of a journey into what it may be like to be superhuman, and know damn near everything, while also getting followed by asian drug lords who want to kill you. lol
The scientific concentration in the movie Lucy is on cellular biology, which is funny considering all her powers went beyond the biology 101 they were prescribing, and they should have focused more on the physics of it all. Physics is the fundamental science of our pathetic existence imo, and to simplify her telekinesis to some small time cellular shit is an insult.
The dialogue was okay, but after 20 minutes from when the bag exploded in her stomach, you kinda dont care. Mainly because no personality existed after the drugs got into her system. The gang trying to kill her had no personalities, she had no personality, the cop didnt, morgan freeman and his scientist friends didnt. It was just this dry spectacle essentially.
They could have shown her using her abilities more for just random telekinesis. They showed it later on that she could shapeshift, and im like wtf, that would have been dope to see her use all these powers to protect herself, and achieve her goals. They wasted too much time on cgi for showing the drug course through her system all the time. You constantly see it throughout the whole movie, and its just like why.
The plot holes are apparent because Lucy failed at what it had to keep the audience captivated, legit science (even if extremely theoretical), how she uses her superpowers, and scarlett jo herself. I feel like ive only see one dimensional scar jo forever now, and understandbly, she isnt a good actress, but i was hoping to get at least a smile out this bitch for once. She is currently the keanu reeves of females right now, who is a hollywood slut on top of that.
In 2014 we should know better to even suggest the forever ago bunked theory that we only use 10 percent of our brains potential. They should have just made the drug enhance what was already our potential, that you could say was lying dormant of sorts. There are so many better ways to attack the human potential thing, then the well known myth of 10 percent.
I would say the movie is like the first gi joe movie, but with no comic base. Its not horrible, but its not good. Its just kinda there, and seeing superpowered humans is always fun, even if the rest of the movie couldnt be any bigger of a cliche. There is also little to no comedic relief, unless you think robot scar jo is funny when interacting with other humans.
I’m not mad i spent my money on it, because Hercules didnt really get me going from the trailers i saw (but was likely better), but i’m also not really excited i spent my money on it. Next up, Guardians of the Galaxy.
Lucy is like hackers meets, ultraviolet, who meets the professional, who meets transcendence, who gets all their personality from Neo (the matrix).
