well nails are not so different from kunais for example, so it doesnt bother me as long as Bang can kick some asses
Well most creations by human hands can be used as a weapon. I bet you have chemicals to make a few bombs in your house. A martial artist is supposed to be able to utilize anything as a weapon if the need arises. So you may look down upon it but Bang might be thinking:“Hey, a nail? I’ll beast on some fools with this. My skill is just THAT great.”
Reaching too much? Where’s my fighter that uses a toiler plunger or crazy monkeys or penguins? A spoon fighter? Someone who uses a fan perhaps?
More importantly why doesn’t Bang wear underwear?:shake:
In the Anime “Katekyo Hitman Reborn” there was a character that used a Fork as a weapon…figure it.
well, in the old japan and china a special kind of fans made of steel were used as weapons
Hecatom: This is out there. So much so I will hide it.
Hatred Edge is weird
[details=Spoiler]
I meant like an electric fan. The one you plug in and it rotates around.[/details]
Changuillo: Well MB has a fighter who is a maid who fights with a broom so that doesn’t surprise me that much.
ah, sorry >_< then.
I think he just wanted to be unique. Imagine slamming the nail into an opponent and then hammering it in with repeated heel-kicks? There’s room for flashy fighting when you have a creative weapon like that.
At the moment my favourite characters are Taokaka and Arakune in that order. Non-human characters are often the most interesting I think. And I just love Tao’s design.
Fighting style wise, I really like the look of Jin and Tao. I enjoy the fast combo-ey characters. so far the only character who I don’t like at all is Iron Tagar.
I actually think the giant nail is pretty cool, they already have two sword users so why not?
Nah, I have to agree with woof, it’s a pretty lame attempt to try and negate the sheer ultra cliche shit that character is bringing to the table.
I think people who’re bashing Bang’s design are just being stuck-in-the-muds for the sake of looking critical/cool.
He’s a ninja. Most ninjas look the same. It’s part of their character.
For a Ninja, Bang is actually quite a good design. He doesn’t wear a headband for one, and of course his weapons isn’t a typical katana. He has a much more hefty build than you’d expect for a ninja character, and a much rougher face. The X-shaped scar is also interesting enough.
To top that all off, he also wears odd pants, and doesn’t have your typical “serious/vengeful anti-hero” personality that most ninjas get stuck with.
Don’t be so boring.
His design is more interesting than Ryu Hayabusa, Ibuki, Hanzo and Hotsuma/Joe Musashi. Only Strider Hiryu is a cooler ninja concept design than him.
At least they attempted something to break the inevitable stereotype without making him incredibly ridiculous and did an adequate job instead of just plopping a completely cookie-cutter design into the game.
how can you guys say that, all you know about him is what he looks like. who knows, maybe the designers are poking fun at the token ninja-in-fighting-games archetype, by partially adhering to it in a certain way, and then throwing in something random like a GIANT FUCKING NAIL.
aegis neglector: i guess you could call it “over extending themselves” but that really depends on what you find acceptable or not for a weapon. i think they’re just going with some of the style from GG, which has some (slightly) non-standard weapons/fighting styles.
My thoughts on the character designs so far, and how they could be improved:
Ragna:
- Looks pretty cool all around. Darkness powers are interesting enough. Trench coat
- Kind of seems too similar to Dante in design. Not a very remarkable personality from what we’ve seen so far. Big sword is a little generic. Not only is his hair white, it’s also spiky.
rating: 6/10. He’s kind of boring IMO. The Darkness powers are a nice touch though.
Suggestions: Change his personality to something less serious. Accessorise with chains or something to spice up his design a little. Maybe give him a streak of colour in his hair. His sword could use a cooler design, perhaps with a black crystal blade or something of that sort rather than typical steel Cloud Cleaver look. Make his hair not so spiky all the way around.
Jin:
- Cool outfit. Does great justice to an ice-powered sword, which is usually a pretty common idea. Doesn’t have spiky hair.
- A hybrid of serious samurai and bishoenen stereotypes which have both been done to death.
Rating: 7/10. I like him actually, but he’s pretty standard. The cool costume and his ice sword save him from a 6.
Suggestions: Make him more hot-blooded and less calm. Irritated even. Perhaps add a little more heft to his build.
Noel:
- twin shotguns. Ability to pull out other guns from nowhere, which is always nice. Cute costume. Interesting playstyle. Actually hits people with her guns instead of just using them for shooting and nothing else. Not a skank.
- Her ability reminds me too much of Sion/Ciel from Melty Blood. Typical annoying schoolgirl voice so commonly found in female leads. Looks a little similar to Jin.
Rating: 8/10. She’s more memorable than the previous two. Her design could use a bit more unique touches to distinguish her from Jin though. I understand that they’re probably related in some way, but still she just lacks something. Overall a good design though and a likeable character.
Suggestions: perhaps some traily bits coming from her hat or shoes could make her look nicer when she jumps around. A less squealy voice. A different colour costume than blue would prevent comparisons to Gin and Ciel.
Iron Tagar:
- Magnetic abilities are very cool. A large character who looks decent. He’s very GAR in the way he shouts his attack names. Nice robot/samurai design. Gaunlet weapons are always cool.
- He’s a little ugly in the face, and a little boring to look at. Very close resemblance to Potemkin/Juggernaut.
Rating: 8/10. One of the overall better character designs I think. His magnet powers are cool and well-conceptualized. Call me shallow, but I think he is one ugly mofo. He would get a 9, but I think they made him look too much like Potempkin.
Suggestions: I dunno. You can’t really change his appearance without changing him completely.
Rachel:
- Cute design. Her accessories and familiars are all quite fun and original, especially her shape-shifting clothes. Electricity-based attacks are unusual for her kind of character. Not a skank. Cool costume that differs from many loli vampire designs just enough for it to look original.
- Very closely resembles Len from Melty blood crossed with Remelia Scarlet of Touhou fame. The Loli vampire archetype is quite over done and they haven’t done too much to make her stand out from other loli vampires. Even her personality seems textbook.
Rating: 7/10. She’s instantly more memorable than many loli vampires just because of her lighting powers and helpers. But she has too many generic elements to rate any higher. Her appearance is passable.
Suggestions: Take away the vampire status. Make her perhaps a devil girl or a sorceress. Or even just some rich chick who’s hobby happens to be magic.
Taokaka:
+Hilarious animations and attacks. Not a human. Great costume and overall design. Semi-mysterious appearance that still remains comical. Loveable mischievous personality. Even her movements are lively and full of character. A rushdown fighter who actually has decent range to her attacks.
- Her legs should have been covered. It would have made her more mysterious, and allowed fans to guess as to whether she was a true cat or a more typical nekomimi.
Rating: 10/10. If there’s one reason for me to buy a PS3, it’s because I want to play as Taokaka. I like her design that much. She’s anything but your typical catgirl, putting a cool spin on the neko archetype by incorporating a more witch/demon-like and inhuman element that makes her much more interesting. And her costume is great stuff.
Suggestions: Put fur on her legs or cover them up. Rather than calling her a “catgirl” call her a “strange cat-like being” or something like that.
Arakune:
+Blob monsters aren’t common in fighting games. Not a human. The insect elements are surprising and quite interesting. He also studies black magic, adding another dimension to his character. (A blob monster who likes to study the occult? Was he once human?) Blood elements break up his black sludge design nicely. Mysterious.
-A bit too similar to Noface, which is OK since there aren’t that many masked blob monsters running around to make it truly generic yet.
Rating: 9/10. A standout unique character. When I first saw him revealed I thought “wow, now that is unusual/cool/interesting.” Even though he may resemble some similar characters quite closely, his design is refreshing and his shape shifter abilities allow for many interesting animations and adds to his sense of mystery.
Suggestions: perhaps change his mask to something a little less like Noface’s. Even just a white circle with a rune on it would have worked nicely.
What’s her face:
+uses a staff. Can fight unarmed. Has glasses. Drinks stuff in the middle of battle. Is a teacher.
- Utterly boring and generic design. Boob service.
Rating: 4/10. I can’t even remember her name, she’s that forgettable. Not much makes her stand out from the typical samurai femme style with the exception of her hairpiece. Combinations of her look and personality have been done way too many times in fighting games. She only gets props for her fighting style and for using a staff instead of a katana.
Suggestions: Reduce breast size. Actually make her look like a school teacher with a more businesslike outfit, but with flourishes of the orient mixed into it instead of a geisha/ninja/samurai hybrid.
Bang Shishigami:
- Giant nail as a weapon. Cool personality. Has some properties you normally wouldn’t expect for a typical ninja. Scarf. Attacks utilize many cool Japanese martial arts and cultural items, including umbrellas and kunai.
- Still looks like every other ninja when it comes right down to it. Spiky hairstyle.
Rating: 7/10. They definately tried to make him a memorable ninja character, which is very hard to do. They partially succeeded.
Suggestions: put a bit more colour into his outfit. Add more accessories here and there. Maybe a big chunky utility belt and more chains.
Carl Clover:
- Interesting costume. Giant maid robot is quite a cool idea. Has the potential to be a fun two-in-one character.
- underage bounty hunter is a little cliche. Glasses give him a distinct Detective Conan vibe, which I don’t think is intended (and quite unfortunate).
Rating: 8.5/10. A very solid character all around with a cool design and a nice concept. Rating may go up as we learn new info about his personality and mannerisms while he’s fighting.
Suggestions: a monacle that he puts away before the fight starts (to avoid left/right mixups) rather than glasses would have prevented any detective Conan comparisons.
edit: scratch that. Looking at Carl’s design, he’s already going straight to right/left mixup hell.
edit2: and I think that Hotsuma definitely has a cooler design than Bang.
You’re all just upset because Arksys will never top the epitomie of awesome character design that was slayer.
Doctor Jam and Proffessor Potemkin come close, but we need a slayer cameo in this game
edit Her name is Lychee Faye, and I like her design/playstyle. Also she’s a doctor, not teacher, so giving her the open dress look fufils oh so many a weeaboo’s wish
Slayer should just be in the game, I wouldn’t be mad at all. He is the only character I like on GG.
slayer with nekomimi’s
I don’t mind any of the character designs, I think Arc Sys did a good job making stand out characters like Bang and Arakune make players look at the game with a “WTF is that?” on their mind.
I remember when everybody got freaked out when GG first came to PS1 with characters that uses Hair as a weapon or an Anchor, or a character that looks too much like Axl Rose but they got used to it.
A ninja with a giant nail, I didn’t see that coming, if he had a sword then he will look boring, but a giant nail catches attention.
Screw that. It’d be great if they could bring in everyone from GGXX, as messy as that would probably be. If I ever start playing Blazblue in lieu of GGXX, then I’m going to miss Bridget’s yo-yo antics, Baiken’s tatami spam, and Sol’s sidewinder loops.
I sincerely hope–and I know I’ll get flamed for saying this–that they make the learning curve less steep than GGXX. As much as I loved that game, I never had the time nor the patience to perfect FRC timing, or learn the exact spacing/timing for sidewinder loops, or perfect all the other technical stuff.
GGXX is good stuff though. I just hope that Blazblue is a little more forgiving.
Nah, I say leave GGXX out of BB, I want BB to play and feel like its own fighter, sure it has some similarities here and there, but its still its own fighter.
I love GGXX to death, but I want everyone to have a new experience with a new fighter. The best experience is when everyone doesn’t know what the hell to do in a new fighter, it makes it more fun to learn.
It was annoying when SF4 was announced and all I heard was, “They better bring in all the 3S characters and bring back Parries”.
Players has to accept change so we can get more new fighters.
Make Slayer the final boss, he should be alive since hes inmortal anyways.
