Bottom line…use Phoenix if you wanna win but have shitty execution in games, period. If you aren’t interested in AE, MK, CS2, or any other fighting game…play this game and use Phoenix. Otherwise, your gaming career hasn’t even begun. lol
Well for starters Storm is a natural counter due to Hail Storm chip damage along side the Dormammu Sun setups. Storm has been a clear counter pick since the game came out, people just don’t wanna use her for some reason or another. Simple simple setup is to get a snap back into Jean, activate Xfactor (omg he said activate without being on the last character!?) before she gets in and Hail Storm no matter the level of Xfactor the chip damage is extremely severe to the Phoenix player so he’ll be prone to either tagging her out which you SHOULD be baiting to re-snap her in and do the same thing again before she hits the ground. Alternatively they may dhc out which is just fine snap her in again when you get the chance regardless if your Xfactor is gone, would you really want to deal with Jean when she’s in dark mode? Of course not lol.
Saying she’s skill-less is discrediting alot of players that DO play her. So by your standard…Gene, Big Chris, Fonzo, Tone and Daigo are super scrubby because they play those characters? Gene didn’t make it far in the tournament does that make him any LESS of a player despite using Phoenix? What about Big Chris? Maybe Clockwork too? How about Viscant? Same goes for Daigo? These are all guys that use Phoenix (not including Daigo) and yet they still have a hard time winning? Its like saying well Cammy in SSF4 is scrubby and takes no skill it’s so easy bla bla bla yet Sako himself came to the states and lost to Justin? C’mon now lets keep it clean here now. There is an etiquette to EVERY character no matter how mindless it may or may not seem, anyone can NOT pick up said good character and just win like that. It’s a fact of nature in fighting games.
You CAN beat Phoenix its not impossible and yes the odds are against you but seriously…to say all of this is to say the game CAN’T evolve at all and its going to stay static. Using Xfactor as an excuse is irrelevant because both players have access to the mechanic, when each player decides to use it is more of the issue at hand. And I will agree she’s the best character in the RIGHT hands even if she does randomize, she’s scary overall by design. Which is the way they intended her to be.

Food for thought…Alot of the people that complain about her prolly wouldn’t last very long in MvC2 vs Cable. That char may not be on the same level of stupidity as Jean Grey but seriously its on par damn near. Cable could smash squads alone with 5 bars (much like Phoenix) if you made the most silly of mistakes and people yelled and moaned about him and you know…the game evolved into something more than just a Cable fest. It turned more into if you played Cable you had to be damn good with him like RowTron, Duc or even SmoothViper to even get any where in tournament with him. NOT TO MENTION, you’d better learn how to block REAL FAST fighting in a sea of Magnus and Storm players. It wasn’t free then and it still holds true now to Cable and Phoenix is no exception to this.

You basically gotta random super or set her up when she comes in. In terms of a valid character being able to deal with her…I believe Dante can. If a Phoenix super jumps into the corner with TK shots…he can go in and jam session to knock her out of it and try to chip her before she hits the ground. In terms of long range dealing with the shots, he can devil trigger and drill through the fireballs and hit her. His drill is just like sentinel’s hard drive. He can also acid rain up close or if the threat of a teleport is coming. Teleporting behind into S is ALWAYS an option.
You already know how Dorm can deal with her so that part is known. Most of the time folks mashing lows can be beat by push blocking then super with a valid beam super character (or Dorm in this case).
Spencer beats her the moment she gets on the ground and presses a button. lol Bionic arm that shit all day every day.
Hsien beats the whole cast in armor mode so this ain’t even nothing new. lol
I think the issue is keeping her out of the air or having a character that can combat her with projectiles (Taskmaster). The air to ground setup is the main thing here. Otherwise…Phoenix gets beat if kept on the ground.
Storm is also a direct counter to her with the hail storm super.
Magneto can gravity squeeze on reaction.
Cammy IS super scrubby because of her damage + mindless dive kick mixups (I main Cammy for those that don’t know)
The point is NOBODY can beat someone with dark phoenix then talk shit like they’re good. That character hands out free wins like its nothing. I’m not saying someone is bad for using phoenix, just that the character is dumbed down so far that anyone can use her and produce results.
Just like Yun will be next week. I’m not gonna front and act like i’m good when i beat people with Yun, I know what that character is, and it certainly ain’t balanced. Just like I’m not gonna act like I’m good when I beat people with phoenix.
So again are you saying Daigo isn’t good for beasting with Yun? That’s what it sounds like to me. And we both know Daigo ain’t no scrub because he was beasting with Ryu for as long as I can remember growing up watching him play. Anyone that wins with Jean Grey deserves it just as much as the next guy don’t front. Balanced or not both Yun and Jean are in the game, in time the games will evolve I can GUARANTEE that…

Agreed, Madoc. I will say this…Japanese players going to Yun is kinda like an admission that they can’t overcome some of the deficiencies their main character might have suffered. By the same token, people will have to come up with a list of Yun’s deficiencies to counter it besides what is already there (Zangief).

I like how people are comparing Cammy/Yun from the SF4/SSF4/AE/Turbo/Rainbow/Alpha/LOLBBQ Series to MvC3 a completely different game.

So more strategies versus Phoenix Teams. . . thats right, Phoenix Teams not Dark Phoenix. Guys gotta understand that having Phoenix on a team really takes away from the other two characters. Obviously they can’t whip out dark phoenix at the beginning of the round, so you have to capitalize on when she is not available. As stated before, snap backs are a great way to handle Phoenix teams. It is even better if you have a throw setup or enough meter to do some massive chip damage and force them to x-factor early to avoid dying. Really dark phoenix without the level 3 x-factor is not so bad.
So what if you can’t deny dark phoenix from coming out? Hopefully with 3 characters against 2 without meter you have built up some kind of lead by the time she pops. If you cannot get a lead by then, odds are you would have lost to that player anyways and their 3rd character could have been anyone really. So what do you do with this life lead? You can either time her out if the time is running low or you can fight her. The easiest way to time out phoenix is to avoid dark phoenix and just leave regular phoenix alive.It is hard to avoid all the possible damage, but if you are smart and back yourself into the corner she cannot do cross up teleport. This is usually what creates her damage and her overhead. If she begins to try to rush down as regular phoenix just exchange sides and run away to the other corner and repeat. They are pretty much forced to x-factor without dark phoenix mode and try to take you out. Otherwise they usually will lose or get desperate and do something stupid like burn a meter etc.
So let us say dark phoenix is out, you use the same strategy to avoid the teleport cross up. If she activates x-factor and you have more than one character try not to activate x-factor. Instead try to use your meter to keep her blocking and keep yourself safe, like what Kensou said about using Storm’s hailstorm or Dormammu stalker flares. Just buy time while that shit it up. Once her x-factor reaches about half you can safely activate your own and just relax. If you can catch her with an x-factor cancel even better, but there are only a few characters that can punish her light attack with feathers. In general, you want to use the cancel when she is trying to air dash back in. Once her x-factor is up just chip her as much as possible, if she keeps using her heal just wait it out. She has to get close to heal so that is usually their best option.
To me there are a handful of anchors that deal with Phoenix best. Anyone with easy air throw combos (wesker, amaterasu, dormammu, akuma, ryu) and anyone with massive safe chip damage (storm, dormammu, ryu) can handle her well after her x-factor is drained. So basically it is like many other characters you face in mvc3. Get the hell away from x-factor level 3. After all the bitching about how cheap it is etc. , wouldn’t you learn how to deal with the damn thing or avoid it? Even when you have a good momentum going you should back off or at least be more cautious versus level 3 x-factor. The mechanic is designed for comebacks, so stop trying to fight against x-factor 3 Phoenix, Wesker, Akuma, Tron, whoever anchors.
