The Sony PlayStation®4 Thread: IT HAS BEGUN

Wow, I didn’t realize they were using a 5400 RPM drive this generation. You’d think after all that drama with GTA5, they would have used something faster. At least it looks easy enough to swap out, that I can’t imagine putting a $500 ssd into a $400 system, especially considering this generation is supposed to last 10 years(and I just can’t see an SSD lasting that long).

I’m curious, can external hard drives be used to store games on the PS4?

An SSD should last much much longer then a normal drive.

And no Externals do not work on PS4.

Sony needs to get their manufacturing plants back to their own country.

Rumours have it that MS is producing a small number of Xbones at Foxconn, while the rest are being produced in Brazil. Chances are, the launch consoles will probably end up being produced by Foxconn.

I think 10 years is a stretch. But it might be doable on a console. I’d be scared to use one, since I doubt the PS4 has any built in ssd detection software to warn the user when it’s at the end of it’s life.

And that sucks about the external drives.

Since an SSD has 0 moving parts, it’s really a massive block of memory, I don’t see 10 years being out of the question at all, so long as you treat the hardware correctly, not store it in a hot location, keep it well ventilated, yada yada. I have regular ole computer drives that are over 10 years old and still truckin.

I agree. Still have my tricked out OG PS2:

…Which amazingly somehow still works. Never had a disc read error.

An SSD has a limited number of writes before it dies. A hard drive doesn’t, but it’s prone to eventual mechanical failure. I doubt I could stretch an SSD to 10 years on a daily use PC. It’s pretty amazing to have a PC hard drive going to 10 years. Mine frequently fail by 5 or much faster on laptops.

But like I said, on a console that might be ok. However, they don’t have any smart leveling software to help extend the lifespan, so who knows?

Even disregarding the price premium, I’m not looking to swap in a pure SSD 'til there’s word that the PS4 has some sort of TRIM/garbage collection solution. What with even disc-based games all installing to/streaming from the HDD, I’d imagine the performance gains would taper off several years in.

How many of you guys are playing Shadow Fall? I’ve never played a Killzone game but I’m considering picking it up this week just to have something multiplayer.

I like it enough. It’s not going to win any awards but if Guerrilla Games makes a sequel to it I say that Shadow Fall is a good jumping off point. It’s just missing co-op. Two guys with two owls could make for some pretty awesome scenarios.

Copped a Phat PS2 with the network adapter plus three controllers (one og, two madcatz) for $25 last weekend. Baby’s running like a champ. Ran through Chaos Legion, MMX, collection, and Lament of Innocence to kick things off. Still have my GameShark 4.0 disc, as well as the old school HD Advance disk. Copping a 250gb drive to throw in there this week.

Why not just play one of the free PSN games? I don’t know how it is on PS4, but Blacklight on PC is pretty awesome.

The Go DEFINITELY belongs in the trash. When digital games like Tekken 6 take over 4 years to even occasionally go on sale for less than 40 bucks, people are fools for believing the lie of digital games being cheaper than retail. Everyone with any sense knew that was as big as the old lie told during the rise of the cd format, and again during the rise of the dvd: “it only costs pennies to print a disk, and the savings will be passed on to the customers!”

And the ps4 chinese issue: another valid argument for waiting until that shit’s resolved. We need to get manufacturing back into countries that treat people like actual people. I would like to build my own ps4 (with supervision and instruction).

in another message board someone posted this about the ps4

wut

If you’ve got someone to share ps games with it is cheaper, so it benefits retail stores and encourages friends to share gamed

You play it in the kitchen?? Thats where you eat!!!

Gotta multitask! I cook bacon and eggs while playing CvS2.

HAHAHA. Have you guys seen this?

The sad part is that they probably care more about the user than some developers.

So… I’ve been charged. I don’t know why I felt like I’ve been robbed when I never paid for it. Haha.
