Sonic CD is great. I think it deserves all the praise it gets, its a pure Sonic game, the time travel element is optional.
As for the comic idea I’m not happy, Boom should not be a 3 tiered franchise this early. Sega is trying so hard to convince themselves this will work. I hope it fails miserably. Sega deviated too far from the Sonic formula for my taste. And this is coming from someone who likes the alternate universes; Sonic Underground, Sonic X, Adventures of Sonic The Hedgehog, Sonic The Movie (OVA), hell even Riders was good for a while. Those are all works that deviated from the traditional Sonic formula, all great works. Boom is just a big heaping mess of Americanized bullshit, it’s like there dumbing down the franchise more than making it more interesting.
They sang, yes. But the stories and universe was interesting. I could be biased of the series due to nostalgia, but I liked the idea of Sonic having a brother and Knuckles finally being on TV. Tails never appealed to me much so his absents didn’t even phase me.
Sonic Underground was dog shit. Sonic’s siblings, the rock band angle and Sonic being royalty were all terrible. Their mom was beyond stupid in that series.
Boom is essentially one giant option-select. If it succeeds, they go use it as the new central point for the series. If it fails, they can claim “Well, it was always just a side project.” They’re being a bit too hasty with all the tie-in multimedia, though.
Here’s one of the variants for the comic. Archie is going along with making Knuckles go full retard in the Boom Universe. They want to really show the kids how stupid he is.
Considering that Sega was at first not even thinking of bring Sonic Boom to Japan, I highly doubt that this sub series has a chance of taking over the main one. It’s been thought of as a sub/alt series from the beginning and if past Sega history has been any indication then I’m sure Japan isn’t gonna let some American ideas completely supplant their own. The only way that could possibly happen is if the Sonic Boom game became do popular and made them so much money over the course of a few years that it became impossible to ignore.
Here’s the thing, Sonic’s most profitable country isn’t Japan. He’s most popular in the UK and France, then America, then Japan. I hope people see Sonic Boom as a complete eyesore, otherwise, I fear they will give up a whole generation of fans for money.
I never liked the “not happening in Japan” part of Sonic Boom.
Then again, if anime OAVs have taught me anything, it’s that diverging from canon in any way, even if the end result is great, makes otaku shitheads hate something. So I dunno. /shrug
That’s like saying that meeting any requirement for any game’s good ending is “optional.” Technically correct but misses the point.
Not sure what “pure Sonic game” means. Does it mean getting up to speed and then immediately hitting a wall or enemy in the game’s horrendously designed levels? Does it mean having that “optional” time travel component comprised of one entire category of thing you can, and in fact should, avoid to do well in (i.e., the Future signs)? Does it mean looking and sounding worse than Sonic 1?
I don’t see anything in that cover that makes Knuckles look stupid (He does a good enough job of that on his own in the mainline games anyway). He’s a Melee fighter, and he fighting in a melee style on that cover. You guys reaching so damn hard you’re gonna pull a muscle.
