Already posted this in the VGG earlier today when I had a chance during a break
This has Tails and Knux gameplay along with a new zone. The music is a bit subdued in the background but what I can hear so far sounds pretty good…really want to hear it in full though. The amount of animation work they put into Knux is ridiculous. My first glance was that they used 3K’s sprite as a base and I was 90% sure of it but I wanted to see it on a computer monitor to be sure and yeah…they definitely did. I almost want to say 75 to 80 % of the animation sprite work they did on it is completely new though…the walk, the edge lean, the climbing animation (good lord…everything about the climbing animation is new lol), glide animation is mostly the same save for some little things when he’s gliding in one direction but the turning animation is completely new. His idle animation looks like it’s gonna end up being brand new as well…they don’t stand still for long but if you go to 8:27 you can actually catch a small glimpse of it right before they start moving again.
Not to skip over Tails but they did a good amount of work on him too but not nearly the overhaul they did to Knux. Slight change in perspective to the Tails copter when he’s flying, redone walking/jogging animation, and redone edge animations. Looks like they touched his full run animation a bit as well. Also looks like they gave him the ability to enter into flight mode so long as he’s in ball form in the air doesn’t matter how he’s launched it looks like. That animation they gave him for the spinning chairs in the saloon is funny.
Also Sonic Boom Season 2 should be starting up this week. I noticed it showed up in my DVR queue earlier.
As I mentioned in the VGG thread Sonic Mania’s new level Mirage Saloon is likely the Desert Dazzle level that Christian Whitehead wanted to add in his port of Sonic CD. The screenshot of Desert Dazzle matches up with the new stage.
The level designs on the new stages dont seem as good as the classic ones (ie. 123k NOT CD). Around the 16min mark when he got stuck in the bouncy bumper section i got hints of sonic CD shudder which is not a good thing.
I wanted to post up the new gameplay footage that got put up today but I need to head to bed. If no one does it by tomorrow morning I’ll do it then before I head to work…before I head to bed though here’s a gif from Gaf
You can clearly hear Mirage Saloon’s music now and the video with just Tails gets a better look at his animations. Looks like they added a transitioning animation in Tails’ running that’s right before he gets to his ‘full speed’ without momentum. Also looks like they touched the full run with momentum animation a bit. Copter tails area slightly further away from him than in his 3K/2 sprite. The animation work they’re doing in this game is excellent. There’s some other gifs and sprite comparison stuff on Gaf that I’ll probably post later.
I’m glad that there’s more Sonic Mania footage out, but damn it, can someone competent play? I’m tired of watching these scrubby “journalists” shitting it up.
And we still haven’t seen anyone use the Drop Dash…
Game explain actually had a video earlier where the person playing did seem to put an attempt in using it. Drop dash is a technique that will see more use as people get used to the levels for momentum.
You can see the animation for tails flying sonic in it. Someone on gaf pointed out the the only negative i could give about knux’s animation that i couldnt put my finger on initially. When Knux is walking/jogging he isnt really swinging his body into it as much as his 3k sprite did. Very very small thing within a mountain of positives.
Probably because from the looks of it, it’s more of a speedrunning tool than anything necessary for normal completion of the level. The regular Spin Dash serves the exact same functional purpose and is easier to do.
The drop dash is suppose to help players maintain their momentum after a jump. The players who have access to the game having been making use of it or simply don’t know how.
Again… Not asking for pro-level play, but c’mon, these clowns are constantly running into the same spike patches they just ran into again and again… and again.
