The Sonic the hedgehog thread V.3-2012 Sonic 4: Episode 2

Sega trolls the Americans.

That was my favourite challenge; I had more fun in that than in Modern PW. I was disappointed that actions like Lightspeed dashing weren’t used much in the game acts.

I feel I should like this game but for some reason I’m having a hard time with it. I’m at the end need to get 2 more emeralds and I’ll be done but I can’t get myself to do it. This is the best Sonic game in long time, but I don’t know how much that is saying because of so many downers. It’s hard for me to really objectively judge this game. I do have some problems:

  • You can only play as Sonic

i know many irate sonic fans complained about too many character but let’s be real folks. Did anyone honestly
complain about being able to play as either sonic, tails or knuckles back in the genesis era? I loved it. I also enjoyed it
in Sonic Adventure series.

-There needs to be more acts.

1 act of either classic or modern sonic per stage isn’t cutting it. Tiny missions do not cut it either although a lot
were fun and creative. Issue was it was too short lived for the price tag.

  • There was no new content.

If you are going to do homages, for Fs sake dont do homages of games that are super recent like sonic colors or sonic 06.
You needed more genesis/mega drive love. I felt like I was being teased because what they did have was simply amazing. Also, poor stage choice. Only 3 I really enjoyed- sky sanctuary, chemical plant and crisis city. Speaking of city, there was like 3 of those. What happened to Ice Cap? Lava Reef? Mystic Ruins? It took me 2 seconds to think of 3 levels off the top of my head that would of brought some amazing diversity and much needed flavor to the game.

Honestly, the stages devoted to modern sonic era made me feel like
I was running around in reject Final Fantasy environments. Did not feel Sonic-ish at all. Actually the modern stages depressed me a bit because it reminded me of how lost Sega was with the series. Planet Wisp in particular reminds me of how Sonic pretty much ripped off SMG. Also hearing orchestrated hub songs made me want to puke, SMG had orchestrated music as well. WHEN THE F did Sonic have that? They always had techno/punk/pop music ever since Genesis days. It doesn’t fit Sonic imo

  • graphics are good. Too good.

Silly thing to bitch about, but hear me out. The fast nature of Sonic combined with the godlike graphics and all sorts of things going on screen kinda makes my eyes like @.@ Takes awhile to get use to, to focus. When I play the old 2D games it’s like I can breathe. Maybe I’m just getting old, idk… but I didn’t have this issue with Sonic 4.

**tl;dr **
Sega is on the right track but the game doesn’t feel complete or where it should be but they are getting very close. It left me hungry. It didn’t have that “WOW” factor that every new Sonic game on Genesis or Sonic Adventure game on Dreamcast did for me. Also, throughout the whole game it irked me that Sega is pretty much acknowledging they dropped the ball badly with the series. I’d give it a 7.5 or 8/10. It’s solid with many merits. I just mentioned the things that I feel was lacking because I want to know if you think my feelings are legit reasonable or am I just really old and grouchy/ nostalgia fag. (I’m 24, grew up with Sonic 1. I did love Dreamcast games though, and I didn’t mind Sonic 4, I actually liked it but wished it was longer, more playable characters, more new content. Homages are fun but don’t let that make up the entire game.)

I’m getting skymin tomorrow, I’m going to try and finish Sonic Gen maybe I will see it in new light, I want to like this game. I’m also hyped for Sonic CD, never got to play it.

opinions/comments on my take?

Tails and Knuckles’s gameplay revolved around Sonic’s controls in the Genesis games. They did almost everything Sonic did with minor differences. That probably wouldn’t work so well by today’s standards. The problem is characters like Tails, Knuckles and the rest of the cast as far as solid gameplay goes isn’t even in it’s infancy and you can’t just throw them in the game and expect them to work like Sonic. It might work for the classic stages but modern? Games like Adventure and Adventure 2 didn’t have great gameplay for the rest of the cast that compared to Sonic’s style and even though many people enjoyed it, many people (if not more) felt the opposite.

In Generations, I think it’s nice that the rest of the cast works as an assist at least and that’s something I wouldn’t mind seeing in the future without slowing down the pace too much. One day, I would like to see the rest of the cast be fun to play. Colors/Generations finally got modern Sonic down IMO so I look forward to more good ideas. At the same time, based on the Adventure series and such games, I wish they would give the rest of the cast their own game (maybe they can all save Sonic for once and/or let the bonus stages involve Sonic or something lol).

And personally… in Sonic 2- S3&K, I always preferred playing as Sonic alone.

Before any of Sonic’s friends can be brought back on the table they need to make sure that Sonic as a whole is out of the gutter. Leaving them as optional stuff for the moment is for the best especially considering that it gives them a chance to experiment with those characters and see how they could possibly fit before doing any sort of full fledged thing with them where you’re forced to play the character. Give them some time. I wouldn’t be surprised if at least Tails is playable for Sonic 4 Episode 2 in a same sort of manner like he was during the Genesis era.

Game is short…yes this true…however you have to consider the following. Average time that an average player will blow through a modern sonic stage will be 3-4 minutes. That doesn’t seem like a lot but as a developer of the game that’s a lot of shit that they have to cram into those stages for those few moments you’re running through them. This isn’t sprite work stuff anymore where you have panels that you can just place here and there anymore to build a stage. To make a lengthy Sonic title would probably require the series to take Zelda time periods to do (5-6 years) or you bloat it up with extra crap that may or may not be beneficial to the game (Sonic’s friends). Granted 50 bucks is steep but you can get replay out of the levels by speed running…if you’re not that big of a fan of the series then it’s pretty easy to wait.

I’d personally rather take a shorter good game than a longer drawn out one but that’s my opinion.

yeah, good points, they need to get Sonic down first before moving to the other ones. And I agree, in SA, Sonic had the highest quality game.

Dunno, this game may be short but it has a lot of replay value. There’s so many different ways to play the stages you can find out, or the little quest things collecting music/art and also the leaderboards.

As for multiple characters, if they do what Sonic Advance 1 did with multiple characters i’m sure everyone would love it.

Man, this whole thread is more interesting than the Sega forums for Sonic Generations. It’s like every day I go there there’s a new DLC thread or why Planet Wisp sucks or make Shadow, etc playable. Some people seem to have taken a new liking to Super Sonic.

Oh, and I gotta add, classic Sonic’s homing attack is so good lol. Seriously, if 4 Ep2 felt like this, I’m sold. Hell, they should just put classic Sonic back into 4 and kill that modern fraud.

Shadow could be playable though as like a skin or something. The graphics are already in the game.

Also, I can’t seem to surpass the 100s on a few levels on the leaderboards.

I just finished the story and this game is now one of my favorite Sonic games. I thought that Retro Robotnik wouldve known who the Chaotix were since it was his creations that were the antagonist to the Chaotix story.I wouldve liked some more rival battles in this game, like the Silver/Mecha Sonic from Sky Sanctuary or Nack the Weasel from Triple Trouble to use Robotniks old boss machines. I like how this game holds up though, and the skill shop is a niiice addition since it does not over power Sonic in any attribute without an exchange for missing coins or something similar.

My favorite challenge so far was the Espio mission in Speed Highway zone. It was like trying to find Waldo in a dark building.
What challenges and levels you guys like thus far? Any challenging zone you guys want to speedrun?

Shadow could be a relatively easier character to switch for Sonic with mild alterations to the levels that only he could get through. I still wouldn’t want Sonic Team to attempt to do that yet even if I thought that was within their current comprehension of doing so since I feel they’d fuck it up royally somehow with something beyond stupid.

Director: We can’t just have Shadow running through the levels and using chaos control as both a means for his attack and to get to other areas…HE’S GOTTA HAVE SOMETHING ELSE!
Me: dives through the god damn window suddendly and calmly walks up to the director and smacks him…NO…
Director: bu-
Me: SMACK …no…* calmly walks out the door*

If they do have Shadow as crap DLC, i’m sure they will incorporate moves like Chaos Spear in his skill list. They should give him the ability to perform tricks on the grinding rails to pay homage to SA2’s rails. then again, I’d like to see more challenges instead that incorporates more than one character as an assist

Ugh, I’m trying to write a review of SG for an electronics magazine here, but the words aren’t coming to me =_=

This game is hard.

Elaborate.

On another topic - Sega is STILL TROLLING THE [S]STATES[/S] COLONIES LOL

I need that crystal…

i guess Sega feels the need to shit on America for all those shitty reviews…

Has anyone else found the Super Sonics to be completely worthless in normal gameplay? You have to equip SS as an 100 pt ability (meaning you can’t equip anything else), your rings deplete way too quickly (especially for Modern with that “path changing” boost), and his speed and jumping abilities are seemingly unchanged from the normal forms. Seriously, what was the point of making them “available” if they’re gonna be garbage?

Other than that, I love the game. About the length of a Genesis-era Sonic with a decent amount of replay value (speed runs, challenges, etc.). Classic plays well (not quite Genesis sharp, but way above Sonic 4-1), and Modern is lots of fun. I thought that it was a bit on the easy side though, when compared to Unleashed and Sonic CD. DAT EGGMANLAND… shutters

Yeah this game is rather easy, but then you got reviewers complaining how they can’t beat the levels.
So, it makes me wonder.
