Yes of course. Ultimately that’s what everyone wants in the end. I was thinking more on the lines of what they mentioned on top of their business practices for the last few releases they have done.

Akai Katana trailer up at Joystiq.

So tell me… why don’t most of you guys have a 360 again? runs off to enjoy Deathsmiles 1&2, Sine Mora, Radiant Silvergun, Raiden Aces & IV, etc etc etc… :stuck_out_tongue:

At $200 there is no excuse.

Because I’d rather play these things on my phone.

Because nearly all of those games are available via MAME without having to deal with locked down consoles.

Buying the ports (console, mobile, whatever) actually supports the developers in some sort of meaningful way; playing everything on MAME isn’t much different than just pirating all of your games. And most shmup developers need all the sales they can get; it’s one of the most niche genres there is.

So, that’s why I play on console whenever I can. I also don’t particularly trust my computer to not randomly stutter or otherwise mess up the gameplay speed at the worst moments (same reason I don’t like to play SF4 on PC too often) but that’s more of a personal OCD thing.

more like so tell me, why do developers keep releasing these games for a console that is flooded with generic gamers which play COD and not really shooters? not to mention the console is extra weak in japan? these reasons make even less sense to me than not owning a 360, at least i can say that i dont own one cause it’s garbage.

Mushihimesama Futari aka Bug Princess 2 here in the states will be available for iOS April 5th.

Though there is no mention of it being in HD. I won’t let Cave get me!

God i wish Cave supported the iCade, as well as other iOS STGs.

If developers want people to support their products, then they need to make sure that the quality and convenience of service are there. If not, then people will look for other ways to enjoy the games.

People use MAME because it’s more convenient. There’s no region locking, and you can play the games on any PC you want at your convenience. Look at movies, for example. People download rips via P2P networks because being able to pop in the disc/load the file and go straight to the movie is far more preferable than having to sit through a thousand copyright warnings, unskippable previews/trailers, and studio logos. Kind of like this:

One of the MAME devs said it best over at the shmups forum. The biggest threat to developers, especially indie devs, are not the so-called pirates or the people who use MAME, they’re the console manufacturers. They want to keep everything locked down so that they can control everything and take a cut. If you want to develop for XBLA, PSN, or WiiWare, you have to be an established developer as well as pay licensing fees to Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo that no indie dev could possibly afford. There’s XBLIG, but your game will not be available to the mainstream and it has to be programmed in C#. There’s Apple/iPhone, but Apple can pull your app at any time, and while touchscreen controls may cut the mustard for simple games like Angry Birds and Doodle Jump, they simply aren’t viable for more complex games nor does an iPhone or iPad have the necessary horsepower.

People who use MAME or acquire games via P2P and then don’t buy them never were your customers to begin with. As a matter of fact, those two avenues, especially MAME, are how most people discovered shmups.

If you’re an independent developer and your game doesn’t end up on P2P networks, then it means that no one knows or cares about your game and it will pretty much stay under the radar because you don’t have a huge advertising and marketing budget. To add to this, developers aren’t helping themselves by including things like region locking, DRM, one-time only downloads, and pay for download content that should have been included to begin with. Stupidity like this just makes the P2P version of the game more appealing.

OMFG. That picture nas posted is the TRUTH. I don’t know how many times I’ve wanted to just up and turn off a DVD because I had to sit through over ten minutes of commercials to get to the actual part I wanted to see. You could bake a damn cake and cut that bitch up in the time it takes most DVDs to get to what you paid for. God forbid if you accidentally hit eject. Your ass is getting cussed out.

Because in Japan, 360 is the console all the shmup players have. This is especially evidenced when you compare sales numbers between those few games that have multiplatform releases in Japan and the 360 versions quite handily outsell the PS3 versions.

That’s the problem with region locking.

It’s bad enough that you have to pay 70-85 dollars to import the game, you also have to spend several hundred dollars on a Japanese system so that you can play the games. Many people don’t consider that a worthwhile investment.

What we’ll do for the love of the game…

No doubt that the hardcore gamers will do it. We all know that shmups are a niche genre, and if they are to be more accessible to the mainstream, it’s not a good idea to require people to buy a Japanese console to play them.

Not only is there a plethora of shmups which can be played via MAME and other emulators, but there are also a lot of doujin shmups out there which can be played for free, and it doesn’t take a very powerful computer to play them, either.

I always figured it was because 360 is so shitty in Japan. I assumed that Microsoft just pumped out the money for some exclusivity on a niche genre in attempts to grab at least some portion of the gaming market. If you ain’t got the talent, you better at least have the money.

So anyway, Metal Torrent is now available for 130 Coins on the Club Nintendo Store. I thought it was a 3DS Shmup and was excited, then saw it was DSi and was disappointed. Anyone every played it? Any good?

And on that note, has anyone played Space Invaders Infinity Gene? Any good? I wish this game would come out for 3DS. System needs more stylish Shmups. I’m enjoying Galaga Legions though.

Personally? Because I live out of my suitcase. No consoles (or desktop PCs) for me.

  1. I’m betting that’s what happened as well. It worked.

  2. SPIG is great. I own it on both iOS and Xbox and I really enjoyed my time. A lot of replay value with both as well and the visuals are magnificent!

Been playing some Thunder Force lately, actually got a 1CC on Thunder Force III, seems like the game throws out 1ups like candy once you start getting a decent run going. Thunder Force IV (or Lightening Force as its called in the US) on the other hand, that game is kicking my ass 10 ways to Sunday just in the first two levels. Amazing games though.
