One thing I noticed while watching sako play against gamerbee is that sako does not play a really flashy ibuki. His play is so solid, he doesnt try to force anything, rush anything or get really desperate.
His spacing and patience is so awesome, and most of what he does is so safe. It was really amazing to watch. I think I am going to slow down how I play for awhile and work alot on my footsie tools and patience.
so yeah, this guy comes from an st background and doesn’t know crap about sf4. literally the most irritating guy who’s completely gotten into my head over the last year. he plays like he doesn’t give a crap and makes me look like a complete scrub. whenever i play him i freeze up and do a lot of silly things. Yes, in the video he seems to be average and really he IS average compared to even the other gief players i play against(and grief players i don’t have problems with). this guy can barely hit confirm but gets these absolutely ridiculous reads with knockdown setups which are completely mistimed sometimes(but add to his advantage unbelievablely lol).
I recorded it live to get help from you guys and Ironically i did ok against him this session, he’s beaten me way more than I’ve beaten him. As you see here I keep it very simple and wait for him to keep jumping in on me over and over.
the biggest problem i feel I have against him is that playing him is very single dimensional and in a big set, that could be a pain, i keep punishing the turdy things he does over and over but he keeps doing them…and i fall for it eventually lol.
anyways, here are the first batch of matches ive uploaded of myself against an opponent who makes me be damn uncomfortable and unnatural in this game
First of all stop using kunais vs gief, to unsafe, once he figures out how to block them you gonna eat one high damage throw after another.
Try to catch him with unblockables, there are severals vs gief. And spacing hits, anti airs like back mp. st.lp and far.st.hk are good. Try to use his failures to get in. My biggest problem vs. giefs is that i want to rush them
the thing is, its more about me playing this guy than playing the gief player. I do much much better against giefs who are better than him lol.
for me, ive mentally completely broken down playing against him, i dont tick throw, bait counter hits and in general try to bait anything, it almost always never works. This time i completely changed my strategy and just stood there waiting for him to jump in on me and thats it.
his game doesnt look like much and as a third person even i would dismiss him as a push over, but its sort of hard to explain, I can never sit on life leads and he gets in these absurdly ridiculous good reads.
I’ll work on the unblockables though, thanks!
When neutral jumping to punish SPDs, always use nj.HP, not nj.MK. Unless you absolutely need the nj.MK range, but with Gief’s hitbox, this is very rare. Using nj.HP also paves the way for walk up st.MP to start your loops.
Speaking of loops, your execution is very on point, on PS3 too! Kudos.
Please stop going in when you have the life lead. I know Ibuki is a rushdown character, but you really need to evaluate your risk/reward. If you feel you have a good read or otherwise must go in, at least stay safe and keep your risk low. You don’t have to pee just to win.
Do you not realize this guy is churning butter all day, everyday? Maybe you noticed it when he caught you with like 10 EX spds. Maybe you noticed it when I noticed it, that when you went in, Gief randomly stood up and crouched and etc. See #1 and #2 when you see shit like this and want to take the risk. See #3 when you realize you have the life lead.
4.5. By going in, I mean doing crazy mixup shit like dp xx FADC , cr.HP resets in the corner, or cl.st.HK , cr.HP resets midscreen. There is absolutely no reason for any of this stuff when Gief is nearly dead and you have nearly full life.
I see a lot of impatience. Not just from you going in when you have the life lead (but that definitely counts for a lot), but just general midrange game. e.g. why are you jumping at Gief? Why are you dashing at Gief?! Either you or the Gief player is getting rushed down 10x more than I see any actual footsies. This is not how the matchup should go unless someone is getting absolutely bodied.
5.1. Focus less on ‘getting in’ and more on ‘keeping your opponent out’, should be the general rule of thumb when playing Ibuki, imo.
Get into the habit of using at least Neckbreaker to whiff punish stuff, such as Lariat and SPD. Try to avoid sweep. Once you do that, also try to get into the habit of using raw U2 when it will close out the round (again, instead of sweep). One of the easiest ways to accomplish this is to simply have either Neckbreaker or U2 buffered whenever you backdash; this should automatically force you into the mindset, plus have the motion ready to go.
I would not recommend learning/mastering Gief unblockables. Vortexing Gief does not seem to be an issue with you at all, and focusing on the above points will help you fundamentally much more.
tl,dr play footsies, disable the forward button on your stick, lrn2sit on life leads.
See this is exactly what I was talking about, playing this guy and this guy alone, I play like a complete scrub. I stop playing street fighter and do stupid shit, the second I start sitting on life leads, in long sets he gets around them in ridiculously stupid ways and closes it out, so I just blindly rush in and take advantage of him not punishing jump ins. The truth is I lack composure, and the second I lose to him in a match doing random bs, I completely lose it and start going in like mad.
There are a lot of problems I need to look into and address.
