Do you guys know of any guide/article/document on how to train and learn efficently for FGs? Most of the time I feel like I’m just wasting a lot of the little time I have at my disposal with subpar training methods

Essentially though a big factor of learning fighting games is just filling in the things you know you don’t know if that makes sense.

For SFV specifics I’ll take Blanka as an example. Due to the way the game works with kncokdowns I knew I needed to be looking moves with 4+ active frames to cover both knockdowns. Just knowing that some somewhat inaccurate frame data I was able to figure out some stuff just by having guesstimated frame advantages on knockdowns then reverse engineering them to the correct number of frames. People were complaining about Chun st.hp, so I looked at Blanka’s far reaching normals and simply played around with the dummy hitting st.hp and figured out how to beat it with cr.mp.

So now most of the time you don’t even need to do that, you can simply look at what other players are doing and then take it from there. So if you don’t know what to do when X or Y move hits, but you know you should do SOMETHING, so observing matches can help you figure out.

A lot of players spend all their training mode time grinding execution when they know they don’t know things, or would with a tiny bit of introspection.

With a limited amount of time to practice you need to be efficient in what you are practicing and learning, but if you’re learning stuff that you need to do in every match, or at least in every match vs. a specific character you’re practicing things that have broad reaching usefulness. If you’re practicing a corner specific, character specific, crouch specific combo, you’re essentially wasting your training time unless you’ve already maximized pretty much everything else.

You don’t need to be 100% optimal in every situation, but you do need to have A reliable punish, A reliable hit confirm, A reliable pressure string, etc. etc. or you’re just leaving yourself with something you know you should have, but don’t. If you don’t know how to land a throw, does practicing an optimized BNB that does 20 more damage really matter?

I always suggest just having someone that can teach you and go over what you’re doing wrong. It can come down to a lot of specific things that are easier to point out if someone is working with you.

Play your matches, analyze them afterwards, hit the lab on the areas you see you’re faltering in.

Follow this three step program and you too can be as good as me

Review is really helpful. I still need to go back over the tapes after pookie thrashed me yesterday. I think (hope?) there is a lot I can learn from those replays.

Was that your first “what went right” video? Wonder if you’ve done any before.

You were definitely contesting him more with jumps in that set and that helped a lot. Abigail wants you to just sit there and play ground game with him because he’s going to win at that range vs nearly everyone. Mixing it up so he has to guess when to footsie or get jumped on will give you more room to apply your footsies and use v skill etc.

He will definitely punish V Reversals if you do them too much, but I guess taking command grab is still better than taking full combos.

I come back and the forum type they migrated to is one of the worst ones out there. It actually makes me long for early 90s forums. I loathe infinite scrolling. I do not see how any of the forum developers see their work as an improvement over previous iterations. Discourse is a shit platform.

Yeah, I think I’ll have multiple matches in a vid like this from now on. No real reason to split them up like this.

That j.hk thing is a quirky issue with Menat. The orb doesn’t fall back into your posession till later in the hit stun which can cause you to be orb less without throwing the orb. Good to just take the guard crush. The damage is never that crazy any way and he likely won’t be in position to set another one up immediately

I’m sure you remember when we switched to vanilla from xenforo. They likely just go for whatever is cheapest and don’t really look past that. Right now this makes vanilla look good, but there’s some things about it I do like over vanilla and with some modding could be more like a traditional forum. Like xenforo you actually get notifications when someone replies or quotes you which is nice instead of just having to refresh and look on your own.

UE4 update:

I’d be curious to know if Capcom’s outsourced mopes take advantage of anything new on offer which is actually quite a lot, among them further reductions to input latency.

Timing is of course awkward, more consistent if you spot something during a neutral jump to j.mk since it doesn’t disable the orb and hits at the same angle below you, but you lose out on 21 damage

So about that Blanka plushie costume. I cant fucking see if he’s rolling dashing hopping or jumping in that. The blob of color with no texture difference masks his animations from me in game.

Anyone else have issues vs that thing?
