THE SF4 BEGINNERS Thread! NEW? POST HERE FIRST!

I hardly play against real good players. Kinda depressing hopefully when I get to G2 I’ll start losing.

You will almost never beat air throws, they have ridiculous priority.

Do you guys dumb yourself down when you embrace a new playing character? I know this is a stupidly broad question, but I am in distress here.

Today (well, it’s not final yet) I picked up Seth in favor of my Viper. I had been a terribly frustrated person playing as Viper. My blood boiled at each match I lost online and pretty much just every match against a guy who was doing all the scrub mistakes. I felt that I never realized my own potential.

So I switched to Seth for a bit, and I noticed how much I enjoyed it, how calm I was and how easily I accepted defeat. I thought this was because I felt no responsibility to win with the guy, but I decided to play him some more, and, it kept on.

I was winning quite a lot of matches online. Then I went on here to learn some combos and what-not. I returned, played online for a bit, and started losing. More and more, and each match became more trivial and aggrevating for me. I realized then that this was exactly what had happened to my Viper. It might sound like I just don’t like losing, but I could feel that this was exactly how I had felt ever since a couple of days after I first started playing Viper, and that’s a couple of hundred matches.

I think I take on too much information at once, I somehow destroy my own playstyle trying to mimic the top players right from when I am completely new.

How do I avoid feeling as overwhelmed and tired as with my Viper? I really fear this will happen.

I was enjoying myself more, and actually playing better when I just sat in a corner, threw out fireballs, and shoryuken’d people who jumped in.
Should I try to ignore everything I read but one tip at a time? Or do I just have to bite it in me and remain much worse until the day far into the future where I am comfortable with all the moves?

you can start by examining other people’s replays. find your opponents exploits and use it to your advantage. always remember, defense never goes out of style. learn how to block effectively, they’re prone to make mistakes and if you capitalize that, you’re doing good. your probable next step is to execute your combos, counters well. practice on that, and u can add some mind games when you get more advanced.

Guess I should’ve posted here first. I’m new to being competitive in fighting games and Street Fighter, this is my first of the series (not counting HDR). I’ve really fallen in love with the game though and have gotten decent at it. Always looking to up my game and always looking for friendly matches. I have shifted characters a few times but I main Akuma right now, I love his versatility. I know a lot of SRK people have friends lists of people from here to play with on XBL, I’ve just refrained from looking for this as I was waiting for the PC version (I play on my roommate’s gamertag online), but with it looking like it’s going to be out in July or something like that and I’ll be living with him next year as well, might as well try!

XBL Gamertag: EdgySwordbearer
My name’s Tyler, drop me a line if you want to play some games. I just got a fightpad this friday, so trying to get used to it (my consistency is down a lot due to the buttons being in different spots).

If there is a better place to request friendly games, let me know (I did not want to sign up for the “mentor” thing, as I’d rather just play friendly unofficial games. Tips are super welcomed though)

You can post your gamertag here or add some of the others that you find. :pleased:

Guess I should post here as well!

I’m a competitive StarCraft player from Canada, currently living in Singapore. A friend of mine out here introduced me to SF4, and though I’ve never played a fighter (except for a little SF2 on the SNES back in elementary school) I’m LOVING this game. I play Rufus and I’m still terrible and unable to play online due to Singapore’s awful internet :(. I’ve had my eyes glued to this forum for the past week, so what the hell, I signed up.

Like we say on ICCup: ROFL SUP

I could use some advice regarding teching throws. I use the standard PS3 controller. I use my right thumb on the buttons. To throw or tech a throw, then, of course, I have to hit two buttons with my thumb. And therein lies the problem. To get my thumb over two buttons instead of just one in time is always too slow, so I have a terrible time teching throws. If my opponent is a frequent thrower, then I have keep my thumb over the throw buttons, but then I’m severely limited in what else I can do. The inevitable outcome: :wasted:

Any advice? Thanks.

I’m still kinda new and I’m looking for people to play with [on PSN]. I main Chun, Sakura, and sometimes Zangief. OperationFilth is my psn tag.

i guess thats one disadvantage of playing on a pad. my friend plays on the ps3 controller too and he is pretty good at throwing. i think teching a throw is more difficult and not always a problem with the controller. reaction time plays a big role.

Would you guys recommend doing everything impulsively or when it comes natural to you, in regards to timing and upping your speed?

I dunno about anyone else but my thumb is always rested on square and x, so I’m never at a disadvantage.

I wouldn’t what comes naturally though I like to think of Risk/Return. If I threw this out, what do I get out of it.

This sounds dumb but how do you do the rolling attack with Blanka? I have been trying for ages. At first i couldnt really understand what that weird sign meant on his move list but ichecket it out on the eventhubs guide. It should be left right left right punch. I have tried it in every single way imaginable… slow fast pressing the punch at the same time as the last punch pressing it just after etc. Any help would be appreciated

Just to ask, but you realise it’s a charge move right? Charge back, then forward, back, forward (pretty quickly i.e. about as fast as you’d do an SRK I guess) and press punch straight away after.

That’s it. Hold back for at least 2 seconds, then do forward and punch at the same time. :bgrin:

No i didnt know that. I feel even dumber now. Cheers ill go try it out now.

EDIT: Another question: Is there a way to do the move without moving backwards? Kind of hard to hit when you walk away from the opponent.

Duck, you’ll stay in place and block low

Be careful though!

All you new people who are really new, I mean as in you don’t even know the basics of the game… your best bet would be to look for a mentor to take you under their wing and have them train you.

I’ll put my name out there. Contact me for some lessons through Xbox live if you need to get up to speed on the basics.
