THE SF4 BEGINNERS Thread! NEW? POST HERE FIRST!

Hey, new guy here, sakura player. Looking to get better.

imo true hit confirming is seeing the move hit and then performing the special/super. when people “hit confirm” in a match they arent reacting to the move hitting but they are reacting to the other player and what they’re doing or not doing. anyone who claims they can hit confirm c.lk xx super in 3s i will point them to the random gaurd hitconfirm challenge as it eliminates any clues they may get from reading a human opponent.

read this site, practace, watch videos, and play people. if theyre better than you, youll probably learn something.

Any suggestions on how to perform FADC moves? I have trouble just getting the FA to combo after a C.Spike much less canceling the FA and much much much less actually comboing something after FADCing.

Right, well I skimmed some of the guides you provided, and when I noticed that there was 11 pages of replies, I thought it would be alot more efficient to ask for something here.

Well all I wanna know is how do I “charge” a direction? It’s stopping me doing basic ultra combo’s, and I’m on the verge of pulling my hair out.

Much appreciated, Glen.

First and foremost is experience, you can only get better at playing human opponents by playing human opponents. Also, cut your vs CPU time down as much as possible; I only play vs the CPU when Im unlocking something, or I want to practice combos on a moving target. Playing against the CPU does practically nothing to help you vs a Human opponent, and just reinforces bad habits. FG fundamentals are vitally important in SFIV. You need to learn proper spacing, proper AA options (including when to just block or take the hit), proper footsies, and basic mind games. The CPU teaches none of this.

I remember when I first started playing Garou:MOTW a couple years ago. My execution was phenomenal (not bragging, but it was). I could hit Terrys feint cancel 3 stand Cs into Cr.C xx Buster Wolf as easily as some players could fireball. I could stand 360 Guard cancel anything you did, from anywhere on the screen whenever I wanted to, as often as I wanted to. I steamrolled a lot of Garou players using my execution and execution aloneuntil I played Nagata Lock II one night. While I was fishing for huge combos, all he did were simple 2in1s. While I GCed everything I could possibly GC, he blocked. Needless to say, he kicked my ass. No matter how good your execution is, a player with better fundamentals will almost always beat you if they are playing seriously. Another player, better players especially, can teach you more about fundamentals in one ferocious beat-down than months in training mode ever would.

Remember that whenever you lose, dont just get pissed off. Take a moment to re-analyze the match you just had, and figure out WHY you lost. Was the opponent baiting AA? If so, it means youre becoming too predictable. Was he mixing you up in the corner or locking you down? Figure out the weaknesses in their strings and try looking out for specific attacks that you can counter, escape from, or block correctly. Was he straight-up out playing you? Well, that happens a lot, and the best thing you can do is try and figure out why he beat you, take your loss and use that information to become a better player. Hell, Im still trying to figure out Abel vs Gief, and every loss just brings me one step closer to winning.

Also, watch and ANALYZE match videos. I say analyze because many new players tend to just passively watch match vids and marvel at the combos or come-backs. Watch the vids, pause them if you have to and try and figure out what player X and Ys best options are at any given point, try and figure out why it is the character chose the options they did. Did they choose correctly? Was it a mistake? You should constantly be asking questions about whats happening on the screen, and if you cant figure out the answer yourself, link it in the match vid thread of the character section and try to get help from one the players there. Analyzing match videos gives you insight into the minds and strategies of the players and enables you to learn even more about whats going on in a high level match which WILL help your game down the line. Now, until you learn basic fundamentals, a lot of whats going on will seem foreign, but theres a wealth of information out there in those youtube and nicovideo matches.

No one said anything about competitive SF (or FGs in general) being easy. Theres a metric SHIT TON of information you need to know, several hours spent in training mode maxing out your execution, hundreds of match vids out there that you can watch and figure out, and hundreds of beat-downs you will have to learn from. If you want to get better, youve got work to do. We all do.

tl;dr version:

may sax teacher was a smart man. when i was learning a song and i was having trouble with a particular part he would have me break it down, play it backwards fwds slow fast whatever. streetfigher combos are the same shit (cept easier than playing an instrument). the combo you should prolly get down first is: uppercut, FADC, uppercut. first get the uppercut xx FA part down, so that it always cancels to fa. then do FA dash so you can get that part down fast. finally, work on dash uppercut to get that down. you now got 3 bitesized chunks and when you get those down individually, start stringing them together like fa dash uppercut or uppercut fa dash and then try to put them all together.

hold for 2 sec

But what about with Vega’s ultra? Asin the second bit, how are you supposed to hold that when by the end of the 2 seconds, won’t you be on the floor?

you only hold the 1st direction for 2 seconds, vega’s ultra is like this:
hold d/b for 2 sec, d/f, d/b, u/f+p

all the directional inputs after the first you dont have to hold at all.

Noob question but I couldn’t find it anywhere (can’t use search function for like 300 years or something haha). Is there a place where I can find a common move list, basically the moves that everyone has like uppercuts, cause when people say uppercut etc. I don’t know how to do those.

Aha, tyvm.

At last, my brother shall feel the wrath of mai Barcelona!

Every character has different normal moves. Usually upper cuts refer to dragon punches/shoryukens/tiger uppercuts. ie, :r::d::df: + punch. Obviously not every character has those.

Ah ok gotcha, so I should be practicing with C.Spike then.

Hi, can anyone help me with charge canceling for the boxer? thanks.

I just started to play ranked more seriously with my fresh Rose (only played her a bit and love her to death ^^). I am sitting at ~1300 BP at the moment. However, there is a problem, whenever I search I always choose “More skilled” yet I get these players with 400-ish BP. It takes alot of time to go up, I only get 20-30 points when winning and I lose about 100-120 if I lose a game. Even if I win tons of games I lose all those points for one stupid loss. Is this a common problem, e.g only finding people with low BP even if searching for “More skill”? Or am I just having problems with the server -_-

i dont know what that is

I would bet that it uses the Trueskill system that nearly every xbox live game uses. For more info on it try some halo 3 forums. This means that BP may not be the measure of a person’s skill according to the filter.

That would mean more wins = better opponents. I keep winning way more than I lose and still see the same players over and over, same with alot of people I know on a swedish gaming forum. We are all well over a thousand points and keep getting matched up with people around 400-500, we win alot of games and once we lose one that means we lose most of our points we just earned… It’s stupid haha

Could someone please explain to me what a kara throw is?

So Im New the Board, Hello everyone. Im an Old School/nEW SCHOOL pLAYER. I Mix it up a Bit. Great to be here.

yes, plus moves like boxer’s headbutt are also considered uppercuts (or “DPs”).

for people who can’t use the search option, you can also use ctrl+f in your browser to find words on the page.

pages 3 and 4 of this thread talk about how to perform kara throws.

for a more in depth visual explanation, check out this third strike kara throw tutorial:
