good stuff man, i want to see the blanka train, chu, chuuuu, haha, i didnt know blanka was that good.
This is the greatest interview by far from the OG Players, yes, even more so then Tomo’s, simply because it was far more informative and much longer. To simply hear how insanely good these players were at their time is absolutely unbelievable.
For real, people talk about how great “Insert Current Top Players” name is today, however in contrast to the True OG SFII of olds…its an absolute joke in comparison.
I mean, seriously, Tomo doing Ryu’s hurricane kick on fucking reaction on a jump attack…that’s crazy. Your talking 1 freaken frame of punishing that with the invincibility start up…and Tomo did it on the fly….
Absolutely ridiculous, and this goes to show, just how far and great these players were when they were at their absolute prime. I have the greatest of respect to these players, and to be real, hearing about Tomo back in the day was the true inspiration to me pushing myself. Although I rarely played outside of my local competition at the time, it was hearing about how great he was that made me push so hard in that game.
Coincidentally, Hyper Fighting was the peak and the time in which I was also the best in my Street Fighter abilities as well. I agree 100% with Jeff on Hyper Fighting, it was the #1 Greatest Street Fighter game ever conceived. People keep “crying” about the dizzies…however at the great levels…it was crazy hard to dizzy players, because positioning, zoning and footsies were so good. That’s why to me, it wasn’t as random as some people claim in contrast today.
SFII:HF, greatest SF game period, I love that game, still play it once in awhile today, when I’m not working or doing more priority matters.
This was a phenomenal interview, I loved it, and it just adds more wealth and knowledge to spread to newer generations, that before players like Valle, Daigo, Choi, Wong…there were other deities.
Those videos are AWESOME.
thanks for these videos Jeff, it’s really amazing hearing such a detailed account of the history and evolution of SF
Great videos. It was awesome to hear Jeff talk at length about many things Street Fighter: strategies, top players, his opinions on the different incarnations. It was also really cool to put a face to the legendary name and get a glimpse of the guys personality (which I liked).
Thanks Jeff.
How come I never see anyone on the HF room on GGPO…I played Battosai this morning but I got him from the ST room.
I haven’t had internet in 6 months other than my phone, I didn’t even know HF was ob GGPO now. I will have internet again in a few days, guarantee I’ll pick HF back up, it’s my favorite. Been playing only ST and HD Remix last couple years due to it being available with comp. I hope there are people playing HF when I get back on.
What else is on GGPO now? Is there a list somewhere?
one thing that I have to hand to jeff is that finally someone took the time to actually explain why they liked HF more than ST. Random “supers do too much damage” doesn’t mean jack to me. keeping the match like a chess match, and the poor ratio of mistake to punishment are much better arguements.
Of course not likely but it would be nice to see jeff and watson go back and put up some HF videos for all the characters. Seeing that blanka train in action, and how mike found a way to beat it, along with everything else.

That avatar is awesome…damn she is fine!
I agree with Jeff on how SF2 HF is the best and last old school SF game. If I remember correctly HF had way more comp then ST ever had were talking like 10 HF machines in one arcade back in 92
would anyone care to explain some of these or point me to a list of changes?
There are annotations on the YouTube video that explain everything.
These videos were awesome. Loved hearing about the good ole’ days. Thank you Jeff Schaeffer. I too would love to see even a glimpse of the “blanka train”…and that story about Tomo finding a way to beat it in the middle of a tournament match was just…ridiculous.
So, what was the counter that Watson found years later for the Blanka train? Would Jeff or Watson be generous enough to shed the light on us unenlightened souls?
these were definitely added within the last like 12 hours or something haha thanks for the heads-up
Hey guys! Its SCHAEFER LOL 1 F. haha.
Blanka train is a mixup of the following that I used back in 1992 ish.
It is preceeded by a BITE.
Roll
Standing strong or low forward…
BITE
You can repeat that or you can do these variations…
Roll
Jump fierce right away, it hits every character if they are standing if they push anything, like if they are trying to counter, etc, and some characters it hits them if they are crouching…
Then you land and BITE.
OR when you land on other side, you jump OVER them AGAIN with fierce right away, stunning them.
Roll
Low forward
Jump straight up short
Verticle ball behind head
Low forward
then either bite, ball again, or jump up short, bite, repeat.
Roll
Electricity for split second…
Verticle ball behind their neck out of electricity
then you can do what I listed.
You can mix up a variety of about 6 things from the bite, to throw them off badly, keep them guessing, and just dominate people.
Against some characters, just roll, standing strong, bite was UNCOUNTERABLE game over.
Maybe I can film a clip of all the options.
Blanka is real tough primarily because of the confusion and speed.
Take this for example…
His jump short LOOKS the same as jump forward.
you jump on somebodies head or straight up with jump short, you can bite them SUPER fast.
You push forward sometimes, then bite a slip second later, it looks the same but it throws off their “counter” timing and distance perception.
Its complicated, but trust me, it works real good.
Jeff
I only watched the first 3 of your videos so far, but already so much nostalgia. I know exactly what you mean about not getting better without going out and playing the best. I used to be the best guy at our arcade (Mission Beach at Belmont Park R.I.P) and would occasionally head up to the Yellow Brick Road during tourneys and play the guys on the side for a few bucks a game. Some of them would make feel like I didn’t know anything about the game at times. I never put the time in to master the game, didn’t have enough to spare. I think I stopped playing seriously around the time SSF2 was out. I never even learned ST until GGPO came out heh.
Anyway, enjoyed the videos thus far and look forward to the rest. I look forward to dusting my HF rust off when I get my internet back on GGPO. Maybe I’ll even try some of those Blanka tactics, never learned him.
HF was the best, purest SF game imo too.
Oh, and what do you think about this rebirth of fighting games as of late? Do you still play SF or any others?
Fantastic stuff Jeff, thanks alot for posting this. A real treasure. If only more of the old school guys would share this kind of info. It such shame so much will be lost forever…
Those vids were awesome man, so much insight on this I never knew. I remember playing CE at 7-11 but I was too young(I’m 26 now) to ever get serious and it’s cool to hear how the scene was then.
