The Sega Naomi Thread

:frowning:

I feel SO BAD!!

If you ever need another one done, I will not charge you for it.

Looks like a repaired Naomi motherboard. Also that reminds me, when I get some $$ together, I’ll send you my netdimm for some upgrade love.

Do the Naomi boards have any features people should be careful with?
Like how the CPS2 boards have a suicide battery?

No, but seriously, anything over 5.1v when under load and you WILL FRY your components. I’ve seen it happen to netdimms, games, and motherboards. You need to

MONITOR YOUR VOLTAGE AT ALL TIMES

I think that goes for alot of arcade boards.

Not necessarily. I’ve seen some boards run a high as 5.25v without issues. The Naomi is a sensitive, fickle bitch.

Click on the spoiler and you’ll see what it is. Anytime you’re ready send me a pm.

The Super Capacitor is prone to leaking and damaging traces and components.

Oh, snap! Not bad! Great work on that!

Completely spaced the supercap corrosion.

I see. I do remember that other thread where the OP blew out both is Naomi and his MvC 2 Dim board. Dude didn’t even have a multi-meter.
Turns out he had his Power Supply set to 5.3 volts on the 5 volt rail.

Yeah, he and I have spoken at length in PMs about this… poor guy killed his copy of MvC2. There’s a guy that repairs them… www.irepairsega.com but his hourly fait is like $80 or so… pricy for smaller games, but for the big $$ games like MvC2, it may be worthwhile.

You know there someone who wanted to mod his Neo Geo board, replacing the bios battery with a Super Cap.
I warned them about leakage, but some dude started to rank about solid state.

Glad to hear someone reconfirming that super caps do indeed leak.

That region switch is SICK.
Sometimes makes me wish I had one; both of my Naomis have a H-version JP BIOS’; sometimes I wish I could switch it to US. Like when selecting assists in MvC2: I can read the Japanese there for the 3 different assists, but not everyone I play with can…

But $80 is most of an MvC2 already. If you look hard enough, you can nail an MvC2 cart for ~$100.

Yes, definitely.
I removed both of my supercapacitors in both my units; no issues running the Naomi without it.

We send a bunch of stuff through irepairsega, very good and very reliable. Because I send 10-20 boards at a time he gives us a little break on the diagnosis charges, so on a limited basis, if anyone wants to add their stuff to one of our shipments I can look into it. I think he has 3 or 4 MVC2 boards from us right now.

Thanks, it really is nice to have both options for situations like that.

I just replaced mine, the cap was like $1.

the Capcom Dreamcast panel more than likely uses the JST PH series of connectors, specifically the B5B-PH-K-S header. the coordinating connector for it is part # PHR-5.

I’ll be making replacement cables for my panel soon.

Does anyone have the part number/where to buy the connectors for the

CN6
CN7
CN12

pin headers on the Naomi?

Also

Pics, or it didn’t happen :stuck_out_tongue:

I have a crap load of the 4 Pin JSTs for the CN12 and pins. How many do you need? I had to get them from JST proper because DigiKey didnt stock the 4s. I can pop a few in the mail for you, NC.

And, the series is: H4P-SHF-AA

Here’s a Maple Bus adapter I made with DC controller ports I salvaged (don’t worry, the dreamcast was broken), turns out it has the same power issue that Dreamcast does and limits amps. I recommend wiring to the +5V on the CN12 connector for both ports. You won’t have any issues this way using power hungry optical sticks on the Maple Bus. I got those connectors with a Jamma harness I bought years ago, they don’t have a part number on them :frowning:
