The Sega Naomi Thread

Dreamcast extension cables…

yes. Please don’t kill consoles.

Yup.

yes. Please don’t kill consoles.

Yup.

This thread is getting better and better and better every time I check back!

And I was thinking… “maybe the NAOMI stuff is dead already and that’s why this guy sold me the board so cheap…” but after all this, I would definitely look for another board.

Thanks to all for sharing all the info!!!

The great thing about getting extension cables is that you can cut them, use the female end for the Naomi Maple Bus, and use the male end to make DC cables for the MC Cthulhu or PS360+.

For those interested (seems this is the logical place to post this) Netboot Kits are going to drop on Friday and come with EVERYTHING you need to get up and running for those looking to take their NAOMI to the next level. It will include:

  • RPi B-Board
  • Professionally assembled LCD Screen (TOJ didn’t want to do it again and I have a great local assembler/designer that does amazing work)
  • Chip for the NETDIMM courtesy of TravistyOJ (N-G.com Forums)
  • 32GB SD Card with the tools to boot. You add your homebrew games to the card.
  • Patch Cable (Crossover Network Cable)
  • MircoUSB Power Cable
  • JST-USB Dongle for use with the CN12 Header

You get it, install it and go! We have 20 of the kits available. I will list and sell them on my site for ease of ordering and shipping/tacking.

What you will need:

  • Naomi System with Bios F or higher [TravistyOJ will be selling them through my site when the chips arrive - I’ll let him announce the price as he will set it and just use the site as a conduit for ordering them and shipping them]
  • NETDIMM with firmware 3.03 or higher
  • Power Supply man enough for the NETDIMM and NAOMI
  • JVS I/O Board
  • Controllers, etc to use with the JVS I/O [I use my SuperGun simply because its easy]
  • TV with VGA Input and RCA Inputs so you can see/hear whats going on!

TravistyOJ is the hero for this one… he did the first GB at NG/KLOV with a lot of success (first that I could tell). He and the others that put the PiForce toolkit together and packaged it up nicely are brilliant and have brought some great things to the scene. He and I teamed up so that we could launch and immediately ship upon order. He did software stuff for this I did the hardware (well sourced and had assembled :-D)

This and CF Booting is next tier and a lot of fun. It really, in my opinion, opens the aperture on the entire setup. Plus its a lot of fun to tool around with. Now that I found my extension cables and @FreedomGundam‌ posted the Maple bus stuff… Im going to be busy!

Here’s the JST-USB Header I made:

And what would be the cost of your kits @"Jasen Hicks"‌ ?

BIG EDIT COMING SOON

I’m going to redo the Maple Bus Compatibility list with the JPN bios, since it has much more compatibility than the US bios. For instance games like Marvel vs Capcom 2, Capcom vs SNK Pro, now have the option to turn on the VMU kit and will use the DC controller and VMU.

So here is a Maple Bus compatibility list I’ve been working on over the last couple of days. All the testing was done on a Naomi with US - H Bios, a Dreamcast extension cable wired to the maple bus. I used a Dreamcast controller with VMU and rumble pack and a Dreamcast keyboard for the few typing games. I only tested whether the the Dreamcast controller/keyboard would work, or if it had an option in the game test menu to enable it to work. I also noted whether there was any VMU activity, I did not test game saving/loading. Hopefully someone formats the list, I’m too lazy to look up how.

I’ve come across this thread on Arcade Otaku:
http://forum.arcadeotaku.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=26535

I also remember reading that the VMU can be used for Marvel vs Capcom 2 in terms of collecting “experience points” to unlock characters.

Fully supported by Capane.Us (The originator of the NetBoot Kit run recently). They are now up and available for sale. They ship within 1 -2 business days so no wait!

But is it supported by Sega?

I’m going to redo the Maple Bus Compatibility list with the JPN bios, since it has much more compatibility than the US bios. For instance games like Marvel vs Capcom 2, Capcom vs SNK Pro, now have the option to turn on the VMU kit and will use the DC controller and VMU.

Just scored a Capcom Dreamcast panel. Gonna pick it up today

Nice score! I’m curious as to what the JST connectors look like to hook them up to the Maple Bus. I have a number of 4 and 5 pins which should be plenty of pins for it, but I wonder if they used a bigger connector (more pins) since the MB had them. Please share pictures of everything, I’m sure we will all love them!

Sweet, I definitely want to see pictures of the panel and the connectors.

The overlay is in rough shape, but that’s secondary. this is only the 4th one I’ve ever seen. they’re RARE.

I bet you that they use the same board side connector and pinout as the controller cable on the stock dreamcast controllers.

Confirmed, the connector is the same one that the Official Dreamcast pad uses to connect the cable to the PCB. Don’t know if its pinned out the same though.

Can you guess what this is?

It’s a USA/JPN Region mod using a 29F032 and a SPST switch
