The Sega Naomi Thread

to make matters worse, the fan (on mine) is part of the heatsink (sits inside) and there is very little clearance between it and the top of the case.

sounds like someone replace the whole fan/ heat sink assembly

Does anyone have a GD-ROM Upgrade Disc they would be willing to sell or loan me?

Those things are apparently not very easy to come across, surprisingly.

Iā€™ve been told thereā€™s a guy somewhere in the US who has one and provides a services to update your NetDIMM if you send the unit over to him.

Iā€™m in that boat too. I have a 2.17 netdimm that needs updating :frowning:

I donā€™t have an upgrade disc, but I can do the update for $30, which includes return shipping of your netdimm. Iā€™m in the US. I would desolder the tsop, flash it with FW: 4.02, and solder it back on.

And how secure is your method @69mustangā€Œ ? That sounds not bad at all considering the price and the jobā€¦ and correct me if Iā€™m wrong, is 4.02 the latest firmware, right?

Itā€™s secure, I use a hot air station. I would replace the netdimm if I somehow managed to break it. FW 4.02 is the latest and allows the use of different types of compact flash cards, not just the Sega ones.

4.01 is the latest official firmware; allows the use of Sega-made CF cards.
4.02 is the latest firmware; itā€™s unofficial because itā€™s been modified so that homemade CF card adapters and home-copied CF cards can be used.

hmmmmmm Mustang, I think you just got yourself a customer

Anytime youā€™re ready shoot me a pm.

Iā€™ve mentioned it on other sites, but I figured people might benefit here as well.

I found Deunanā€™s old Dimm Tools for the region patching of Naomi images from here http://www.emudreams.pl/news,Deunan_Knute_-_Naomi_DIMM_toolset,6407.html

To use:

extract the region.exe to the folder where your BIN images are

open up a command prompt in that folder and type ā€œregion.exe yougamename.binā€

obviously no quotations and replace it with the actual name of your game

Iā€™ve only tested it with a USA H bios on an actual Naomi. A few games like Street Fighter Zero 3 Upper, unpatched you get the Error 02, patched it loads up with the US bios and you get the USA warning screen, best of all the in game language and win quotes are in English! SF3ZU comes up as Street Fighter Alpha 3 Upper. Iā€™ve tried almost all the available files and all have worked so far without issue.

A friend of mine had given these tools to me but I had misplaced them. Thanks for the info!

Interesting. Thanks for the info!
I have Japan H-BIOSes on both my Naomis, and I tend to prefer the Japanese text anyways.
But itā€™s interesting for the JP-BIOS-only games, for sure.

No prob, I wish I would have tested all the games before patching so I could have made a list of changes. I tested SFZ3U first and got excited when it was in English, so then I immediately patched them all.

I love this threadā€¦ learning so much. Let me contribute:

CN12 Pin Header has 2 +5V pins and 2 GND Pins as such:

GND GND 5V 5V

The connector uses a JLT H Series Female Connector (4 Pin). Very convenient for hooking up a rig to get power to something external that you want to come on with the Naomi.

I love this thread as well.
On a random aside here: itā€™s funny (and a bit sad) that I only come to appreciate Sega stuff NOW. Iā€™ve always been a Nintendo guy back in the NES vs Master System and SNES vs Genesis days, and was more of a Sony guy during the PSX vs Saturn and PS2 vs DC days.

Anyhow, some additional info for the Naomi newcomers:
CN6 and CN7 on the filter-board are known as the Maple Bus. You can connect Dreamcast controllers there, and use the VMU for saving, character colors, etc (though you may need to change a setting in the Service menu).

http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/9869/dcpinout3.png

I havenā€™t tested this myself, despite having a spare DC controller PCB sitting around unused.
I also havenā€™t tested this using an MC Cthulhu either.

However, itā€™s not entirely magical. Things to note:

  1. You STILL need a JVS-JAMMA I/O board connected in the USB, otherwise games will not boot
  2. Not all games support the use of DC controllers, but apparently at least the Capcom games do (CvS1, CvS2, MvC2, Rival Schools 2)

Enjoying the hell out of this thread too. Iā€™m just lurking and planning. Keep it coming guys!

The MAPLE BUS is what the DC used on the controllers.

These headers are used for Capcom panels with Dreamcast controller ports built into them.

There are some fun things like VMU save files from the NAOMI that work on the DC game, as well as the ability to play with a game pad!

There are only a handfull of games this is compatible with though. Typing of the dead is one.

Lupin the Typing works as well with the DC keyboard. I need to pick up some controller extensions since I canā€™t find a broken Dreamcast cheap enough to steal the controller ports from.
