The Role of Girls and Women in the FGC

So, basically, this shouldn’t happen because the community isn’t mature enough for it? I have a solution for it- if someone acts up too much- ban their ass and pull their badge. People like that don’t need to be in the FGC. Let them go play MW2. That’s how you solve the drama.

If you guys won’t tolerate racism, you shouldn’t tolerate sexism.

Not a fan of that particular idea, despite being a big fan of the concept. Maybe part of the prize for winning the women’s tourney would be a seed in day 2 of SSF4 tourney? Basically treat it as part of the tourney?

Making it free does kinda cheapen the main event in my eyes.

^^^ A real girl  Her opinon counts more than all of everybody elses.

That’s all fine and good and I agree that people who do this shit should absolutely get kicked out, but if you think this is going to be isolated to a couple of assholes, you’re kidding yourself. It’s a guaranteed disaster and this community just isn’t at the level of maturity where it can pull something like this off yet.

THAT is a good idea. Guaranteed woman going in to Day 2 would be hype without putting ladies in a circus sideshow event.

Freak show imo, ppl wont watch for the skill…

Honestly I think this is a garbage thing you guys have done. It’s just messed up to the FGC in general. Let’s make a all girl SSFIV tournament and drop a game that deserves it more.

Don’t get me wrong I love watching anyone play but Seriously it’s a main tournament???

You could have made it a side event for like friday or saturday night.

Good job showing you guys really care about the FGC.

I just wanted to add some more info:

I wrote an email to Leigh Alexander from SVGL and editor at Gamasutra. She sent me a reply that changed my opinion on the subject of a “females-only” tournament at EVO.

In it she writes, “…if it’s okay with the participants, then it’s okay, period.” She also mentions that it would be a good model for other female players to enter the scene, as fighting game tournaments are mostly a boy’s club (which I would agree with) and can be intimidating to enter. A female focused event is fine, she says.

She admitted she isn’t that good at Street Fighter, but that’s not what’s discouraging her from entering. I would imagine it’s the audience that’s intimidating. Just look at other prime examples, e.g. Devastation’s stream, ustream chats, IRC, etc. The majority of comments are pretty degrading toward women. The community just isn’t mature enough when anonymity is in effect, in my opinion.

So long as the focus is on the game and not the sensationalization of females playing in general, I think I can agree with Inkblot’s insistence on this tournament. I wish it good luck.

I think it’s a bad idea for the reasons posted many times already but another thing I noticed last night on the podcast is that wiz was trying to make it seem like a serious thing to get girls interested int he fighting game community but the same time they were also making fun of the event and talking about touching the players or having a single ladies only event and what not and giving the impression that it’s really about giving lonely video game nerds the chance to gawk at women. I cant imagine being a girl and being excited for the event. I would just want to enter the main tourney and get some good casual matches.

Fighting games themselves are still pretty small compared to other competitive games and they still have a large untapped audience that includes men. Might as well just have a scrub tournament instead. Not saying I think that’s a good idea but if evo is all about seriously expanding the community as much as possible that would be better than a ladies only event.

Honestly, I don’t care if 100 people or Justin Wong gets thrown out. Send the right message.

The only downside of my idea is women could double enter, and it would have to be day 1, but since the women’s tourney will be small, it should run quickly.

I think it would be more constructive to encourage female gamers to enter the main tourney rather than having a freakshow on the side (not that this is what it is intended to be, but it Will become that i’m sure).

THere are more girls playing games in general now more than ever. I think its a desperation move to hold an all female tourney. If anything SRK should be more aggressive in marketing this tourney to the female gaming community.

putting them in their own division only contributes to the idea that girls < boys. That is NOT what you want (as you have duly stated of course).

This ultra sensitivity…needs to stop

I’m completely confused that you are female and saying we need an EXTRA BOOST to play videogames

I just can’t find the logic. You need men to give you the pat on the ass “attagirl” type go ahead? …lol

Check this out.

Oh man sick burn bro! :wonder:

Well, I can see how anyone of the female persuasion would have to endure a whole lotta BS from caveman like jeers in the FGC, maybe that extra boost is to deal with that specific hurdle? Did you need any back up to sift through that mess? Or did you just suck it up and deal? I cannot pretend to understand that side of it, the stress of tourny play is one thing, adding to it sounds kinda brutal.

… no
What I’m saying is a lot of girls won’t step up because it’s just not something most girls do. A friend of mine was REALLLYYYYY shy and if I hadn’t helped her getting into the whole gaming thing with friends she never would have stepped up to it, even though she loved gaming she only really played at home, alone.

She needed the extra support. I’m not saying I need MEN to give me the “pat on the back” I’m saying if someones there to support and help you rather than put you down it helps…

Making separate tournament events for any particular group of people (not just women) throws us back roughly 60 years in a social sense, and essentially admits inequality.

If something is absolutely going to be done to attract women to Evo, just give women a discount on their entry fees.

…so at this point, it really comes down to simply asking/reaching out to the female gamers who are willing to attend EVO and ask/see their thoughts. That’s all I can honestly say on this matter now.

we can argue/bitch/complain/nag about how we guys don’t like it. But we’re guys. Reach out to the females who actually go to EVO and/or plan to participate in either the main SSF4 tournament or the female one.

But you’re missing the point. I’m fine with throwing out half the crowd if need be. The point is the damage will already be done. The ladies there will regret their participation, the ladies who see how poorly these women were treated won’t want to participate in future events, and the larger audience that we’re trying to reach out to will be disgusted with the way they were treated and it will take years to shake the “FGC is sexist” rap.

Give this community some time to grow up and introduce ladies in some other way that a) isn’t broadcast out to the rest of the world and b) doesn’t put them in a situation destined for failure.

Its a tricky situation.

On one hand the FGC (especially marvel fans) is very much about hype, shit talking, and demands that people have a thick skin. The treatment of new players on SRK was a good example of this in action.

So…I think this is also a culture thing…either everyone can talk shit and everyone has to have a thick skin…or everything has to go PC.

What won’t ever work, is trying to say “well, you can talk shit and get hype, but not at the women”.

This isn’t just about EVO…its about the FGC culture as a whole and what we are willing to tolerate.

I think the only boost they ever needed was enough to desire to just play, and beyond that, seeing other females compete and saying “Hey I can do that” or “I’d like to do that”. I’m not sure an all female tourney will serve that purpose as much as it will make girls just comfortable playing other girls.
