That Capcom pad’s got an interesting design. I think the intention was for you to hold in in a way so that your index, middle and ring fingers are on the buttons (which is exactly how I hold pads for fighting games).
MarkMan, I DEMAND a shot of your 9 (?!) Namco sticks!
my first stick was a sega arcade power stick, I dont have it anymore but I think it was this one http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_BDCqpuwRnf4/Rhkobv04jkI/AAAAAAAABVs/agt44T90o8U/s400/ArcadeStick.JPG
I remember using it for a bunch of games, I didnt even play fighters apart from renting SF2 and mortal kombat a few times.
and I have that PS1 namco stick too, its great.
I still have one of those, I got it a GameStop of all places for like $2 or something ridiculously low.
One sad, sad morning of very heavy SF2 Turbo gaming many eons ago, my SNES Advantage started to do the “slow motion” thing…Only I hadn’t turned the switch on. It’s still stuck like that to this day :annoy:
I found a couple of these at my local trade center. I would’ve bought them for modding, but I wasn’t sure if they could even be modded for Xbox 360 or Playstation 3 use. Anybody know if this would be possible? I’m sure it’d require a ton of work, if it’s even possible.
There are NES to USB adapters you may be able to use on the PS3. There isn’t enough clearance in that for real parts though. You’re probably better off modding a newer stick with a NES controller PCB.
Thing about that ASCII stick for NES is that it actually looks like it’s a pretty decent stick.
I wish Hori would make a joystick like the original fighting stick today. I like the square, black utilitarian design. I guess that role is filled by the HRAP and the FS3 is just a toy.
I’ve owned several joysticks in the past.
This one: http://www.cedmagic.com/tech-info/remote-control/epyx-500xj-joystick.jpg (not my pic)
Mine was an NES model and had two buttons instead of one.
Was pretty good, and actually used switches for the for the directions and buttons. I ended up modding it by taking out the joystick and putting it in a shoebox, then hooking the switches for the buttons up to some pushbuttons I stole from a chuck-e-cheeses.
I had an Advantage for a while, but I never liked the joystick on it, and I didn’t have any fighting games for NES. It sucked for Karate Champ.
I had this one too: http://images.channeladvisor.com/Sell/SSProfiles/60000508/Images/2/2SNESjoystick.JPG
It was also pretty bad. I had been playing arcades for a while by then and I had seen the inside of a real joystick. This stick uses rubber pads instead of switches and I considered it crap. It still was pretty cool to use this in conjunction with my friends arcade stick and pretend we were real pro players. Our execution was horrible on these but we swore “it just takes getting used to”.
Later in the PSX era I had a lot of much better sticks.
First one was some joystick from toys r’ us that had a blue case with a aluminum faceplate. It had huge black buttons with the button names printed on them. Anybody know what this was? It was a probably pretty decent stick, but I was so oblivious to Japanese controls back then and preferred a controller to a stick. I traded it for a PSX copy of Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter.
I had this stick next: http://www.defconsoft.co.uk/wp-content/gallery/defhardware/HPSArcadestick.jpg
I bought it after attending the MWC in 2001. It was a souvenir I took home from Chicago and also the first thing I ever bought from a Funcoland (RIP).
Pretty decent stick, and the buttons look just like Seimituss. I haven’t used Seimitsus so I can’t compare. The switches on the joystick have a high engage force so it’s kind of tiring to use. I kind of wish I had this stick back because I would like to try it out in HD Remix. I gutted it years ago in a ill-conceived attempt at using the pcb for a custom stick.
After I went back to pad for a while I finally broke down and bought a MAS. I know it isn’t really retro yet, but considering 2002 was 7 years ago it won’t be long.
The MAS was my baby and I really felt like a “pro” anywhere I went.
This didn’t stop me from buying more joysticks just for fun and I finally bought my first good Japanese style stick:

This stick has a really good joystick and buttons. The buttons are weird. They don’t have a lip, they just stick straight out of the joystick shell. But they feel really good and click when you push them in. It also has a nice arch. The stick has a very short engage distance and is very stiff. I’m guessing this stick isn’t really for fighters. It feels like it would be very good for shmups. But it worked really well for PSX ST and A3. The square gate was very difficult for me to use at first, but eventually I came to love it. I sold this stick to one of my friends who was just getting into fighters so he could have something decent to practice on and he’s been playing ever since.
oh shit my friend has this. i took out the snes PCB and replaced it with a third party psx controller. i think i still have the snes pcb somewhere.
the stick is not too bad i guess. the buttons feel a bit clunky and the box is pretty light.
Wow this is a stroll through memory lane for sure! I’m lucky to own an NES Advantage myself. I picked it up at Toys R Us no more than 10 years ago even at a very good price. I especially liked it for the turbo functions.
I also remember owning the Fighter Stick SN for the SNES and I definitely remember having a joystick for the Sega Genesis but I forget anything about it.
I’ll post up a picture of my incredibly whack (but I loved to use it with Marvel Super Heroes and MvC1) PS1 joystick. The buttons were on a turn dial so you could adjust how you saw fit.
OuroBorus, I used to have that exact stick for SFII! I still regret getting rid of it…as I recall the switches clicked like mad in that hollow plastic box.
Funny thing about the Advantage, It has the same threads as a sanwa stick, so ball tops will work just fine on em!
a friend of mine lost the top to his, and he used his old Hori EX2 balltop on it.
That’s hilarious, someone snap a picture with an Advantage rocking a meshball. I’d also like to see a bat top with adapter. Maybe I’ll buy one of these after all just to mess with.
hah i still have that stick. i bought it specifically for playing super sf2 on x-band (which i still have too btw). horrible.
i still have the capcom soldier pad as well, and i enjoyed using it.
edit-
i have one too and it’s a great stick. 100% stock happ parts, with happ ultimate stick.
Yay C&L joystick! I got mine in earlier this week and wired it up for PS2 today.

$16 shipped for the stick, $4 for the PCB, and $10 for new feet/wiring.
$30 for a Happ stick!
I played the NES Advanage with the Converter on the PS3…Kinda odd playing with only 4 buttons…A, B , Start & Selete
Sega Quick Shot…

I’ve never quite figured out why the round area with the button rotates. (bogus)
But I played Toejam and Earl: Panic on Funkotron all day with this bad boy. Good times! :lovin:
I don’t know if anyone ever heard of the Konami Hyperstick for the Playstation, but apparently it had an LS-56-01 stock: http://www.ooyashima.net/db/hyperstick.html
bringing back memories. My first system was an SNES my mom bought me along with the capcom joystick in one of the 1st post along with Street Fighter 2
