The Rap Thread: News, Reviews, Rants & Opinions: Volume 9 - Yes, we know "Hip Hop"

Technically speaking Mariah has the most range…

serious, she’s in the guiness book of world records for it.

But range don’t mean SHIT, its not about ability, its about what you do with it. T-Pain is one of my fav R&B artist eva, and the ninjas singing ability is ‘iaght’ (he does have some lungs without AT)…but homeskillet did some off the wall shit early on, now its a bit meh - topically sonically and conceptually. Kelis couldn’t carry a note if someone wrote it on a sheet of paper and put it in her hand to put in the mailbox…but her first CD is a personal classic for me. Mary came into the game with HORRID actual singing skills, but over hte years she developed a decent voice, but she’s still the queen for a reason.

Talent is only 10% of the equation.

Sorry but your pitting honda against honda

Their voices crack an are rustic an the type of vocals that when we are recording you have to filter their mics…

Range… range is Aretha, Mariah (needs to learn control), Christina Aguilara (honing control and breathing). Range defines the ability to stretch across multiple levels and change the feeling/atmosphere of a song if needed.

The ones you listed battling can only create a certain mood an can not take it beyond that. Great artist no doubt an can cater more so say to the ‘sorrows’ ‘revenge’ type rnb songs that capture the urban audience.

Aretha toots her horn so much cause it became a point where you realize what you touched/sang just turned gold an youve created songs that are archived an presidents as you to sing to them…

Regardless, people need to realize the man needs to work too and i honestly don’t see how the Grammy’s letting him perform and him winning an award means that they are justifying domestic violence.

Yeah ugh, my girl Adele had me @ wow ever since Chasing Pavements. Rick signed her??

Would anyone else consider Alicia>>>>Beyonce in voice?

I would. Alicia has always had the better voice than Beyonce.

No… Rick found her (doesnt get credit) an arranged/produced her majority of her projects… Sorry but Rick is whom I would want to be like… finding and knowing talent an simply playing the background… he genuinely understands and appreciates MUSIC… definitely needs to be honored one day after you check his history and artist he has pushed to the forefront of music.

ya’ll talk Ruben? Yeah he needs a spot.

Alicia > Beyonce all day…but IMO they cover different aspects of R&B…like both are fruit, but one is still an apple an the other a plum. If I want a radio hit, I’m going to Bey, if I want an album, I’m going to Alicia.

I heard Amy winehouse for the first time this weekend. I don’t understand but shrug.

I heard Adele for the first time this weekend…or a snippet shrug

Don’t feel I missed anything.

Is this the same Rick Ruben that had a hand in changing up Linkin Park from being good to ‘meh’ right now?

Jill Scott has the same range technically

Alicia has fallen off in the last couple of years album wise. Doesn’t sound like she had the same passion from her first 2 albums.

IMO perfect voice control goes to Anita Baker…

lol @ honda vs honda

don cornelius commits suicide and now whitney goin out like this. damn.

ms. monae gets my vote for best pipes among the current crop.

Naw, she spent I think it was 7 years putting together that first album. The second album was contniuation of that…with the third and fourth being ‘releasing albums for catalog purposes’ - so I won’t blame it on passion/soul, and more on time/purpose. However I will stand up and say my fav AK tracks are from her third album. Granted its the production more than her.

Etta James was 1st, Don 2nd and Whitney 3rd

edda james, it always happens in 3.

No no no no… Mariah range meter is maxed out. She just has NO control an has yet to accept someone to mold her. Jill has a lovely mellow range… her meter would be like 45-50 percent. don’t get me wrong she a soft toned the mid range ie a sade where she will not attempt to leave that range same with ms. baker

You sir are correct, she isn’t anyone I associated with so she didn’t come to mind.

Mariah only having max range? Am I in the twilight zone?

But Jill has hit C7 on her songs (background vocals)

3:40 in the background…her hitting C7

Again, she might not hold it as long as MC; but she can hit it (and even better she knows HOW to use it in a song)

Also, Baker is more comparable to Braxton…both of which I feel are VERY underrated (though TB has the gdlk Babyface assist…)

Max range… meaning covers all grounds. Trust me on know her cause it irks my nerves no one will put a foot in her ass an give her a path to truely open up an show the power/potential she has…

She can I have no doubt in that but she will not stand behind that. Think of everything Jill right now…smooth… soft… a mid range she is consistent with her spoken word style. thats what I mean when I say her range is about half way. She will not venture more than one song per album.

She needs to get back to her and the piano…though now that Mr. Keys is in the picture I think she will become more and more “edgy” than soulful (but who knows)

Oh yea, she isn’t going to have a song where that is her “norm” voice.

Also, has MC hit that range in the last…3-5 years?
