My avatar basically sums my life up.
I don’t think anyone will argue credibility in the Drake vs. Common clash, but Drake probably has more ears right now. Still, having spent my life in Toronto, I think most cats would laugh if they saw the “hood” in which he came up.
Canadian rappers with more to offer? Check the second and third links above.
I dunno this beef is kinda zzzzz to me. This seems like a lose-lose for Common.
If Common wins, will anyone really care? Will the 18-24 year olds (Drakes fanbase) stop supporting Drake?
If Common loses, he immortalizes Drake. & ethers himself…
Lets not forget 50 Cent exposes Rick Ross COMPLETELY… & look at Ross now. One of the biggest rappers in the game.
The only people who will care if Drake loses are the people who don’t like Drake. Hell, most Drake fans probably don’t even care/know about this beef.
I think he had his own stuff to offer, and his style and theirs have obviously diverged seriously. k-os is probably the one artist I can legitimately say I can word-for-word recite each one of his albums. Yes! was a dope album. The beat on The Aviator is gets me hype every time I hear it, in a way that only certain tracks (re: Above the Clouds) can. Not everyone will agree with me, but it’s just really driving.

Also, this track was from what, 2000?

k-os kills it on verse two. Oh, and LISTEN to the last 4 bars of the first verse, and tell me Red One didn’t know 9/11 was coming (watch the cut!)[/conspiracytheories]. Also, why does Barrington Levy have the best voice ever? My point about this is that he’s been doing it since early on. Don’t believe me?

First video single, from '93. He might look like will.i.am, but being black with dreads, a beard, and conscious subject matter doesn’t constitute blatant borrowing. I’d say that’s where it ends.
That’s because you won’t find hip-hop until you realize it isn’t on the surface. Only those who want to learn will. It took research for me to find some of who are now favourite artists. Seek and ye shall find.
I don’t usually poke my head in this thread but I’m just sayig…I miss beef. Idc that Common could body Drake I just want Drake to put up a fight so it can be entertaining.Same time I don’t want Drake to test it cause I don’t mind him having a career and don’t feel like it should get ended just yet.
Also glad someone else actually knows about Shad. That made my day.
Not about the looks but I can see were you could think i ment that. That’s the easy way to discredit someone elses arguement by assuming they went for the superficial. What i ment was how Exit(2002) at times sounds like Behind the Front(1998). I liked his stuff after that too, but you have to admit there was a stylistic similarity at that point in his career.
I must have some Deja Vu or swear I saw it in the dream I just woke up from, I remember seeing something about Jay-z and ivy blue…then I wake up check this thread and see that’s his daughter and ish. IM TRIPPIN RIGHT NOW
I’m not seeing it. They sound distinct in lyrical delivery, beat selection, and content. Not to mentioned k-os was singing for about 1/4 of Exit. Can you name the specific parallels you see, or show them? I’m less familiar with Behind the Front: it’s been a while since listening.
Hmm, that k-os song wasn’t on Exit, and just because two beats had drums and guitars doesn’t make them bit. The patterns aren’t even similar (the BEP one is four-on-the-floor and the k-os one isn’t).
Trying not to spam the thread with vids so I’ll just post links:
Neutroniks (this was on the North American Joyful Rebellion release, but was actually on the international Exit. Same with Superstarr Part 0, actually, which is funny because his number one single wasn’t on his North American album… someone at EMI needs to be fired). Superstarr Pt. 0 Call Me(please show me how this was “blattantly borrowed” from BEP).
Wow, you weren’t kidding. EMI is doing a really good job of keeping all content from Exit off of YouTube, which is such a pity. I wonder if these labels realize they’re damaging their artists?
I just felt that the themes(cultural music sampling) and b-boy stuff kinda merged together alot with what BEP was doing at the time. Obviously, later on they both diverged into different directions but there was a four year period of interchangablility. Maybe borrowing was too strong a word but they at least were on the same wavelength for a min. I actually had his first three albums but I lost them when my computer got a virus a couple years ago.
Yeah I’d give you that they’re thematically similar. Funny that you mention bboys because I actually got into k-os because of the Superstarr Pt. 0 track, which was being played at the sessions and spots around the city where I was going to break at the time. Built from the underground up.
