The Rap Thread: News, Reviews, Rants & Opinions: Volume 9 - Yes, we know "Hip Hop"

None the less Koop, the stuff they rapped about back then is the same thing people rap about today, so its not use saying Drake is wack when LL is just as guilty for crooning on that emo “im just trying to wife you up” stuff.

Popular themes in hip hop:
-Drugs
-Money
-Women
-Shoes
-Jewelry
-Guns
-Alcohol
-Fighting
-Hustling
-Going to the club
-Traveling the world
-They momma
-They daddy
-“They was doubting me but I made it!”

Now I’m not say thats ALL that rap about, I’m saying they rapped about it back in the day and they rap about it now. So whats the real complaint here?

In 20 years Kendrick Lamar might get his stripes and be sitting up there with the rest of the Hip Hop elite. I’m just not getting the argument.

If they’re wack theyre wack, but its not like the content is THAT monotone that it should turn you off. At the end of the day its about the delivery and the production, so thats why the same themes are tolerable. Thats why I can listen to Luda, Big Sean, T.i., Twista, Shawty Lo, Rocko, Andre 3000, Ice Cub and Busta Rhymes rap about a womans ass. Because they giving it to me a bunch of different ways.

The funny thing is as much as people hate on Cudi, Wayne, Kanye, Lil B, Lupe…etc etc they have all opened hip hop up and gave us new themes to play with.

I think thats indefinitely more valuable than hearing your favorite new underground hype rap about the same thing as the nigga on 106&Park that you apparently cant stand.

Crazy gems. I’m been told you…

Wan Shi Tong of Rap

lol

Say what you want about Puff but he is no more grimey than these Jewish record execs like Iovine and the like. It’s just his business is more out in the open. I heard he might crack a billion if Ciroc does well. No one gets to that level without ruthlessness.

^let that black man live,Craig Mack was thinking about going to Death Row east

…umm…they have? Got to ask, what are they cause I hear the “same 'ol” that I heard in the early 90’s from them.

I dont recall many hip hop artists in the early 90s appealing to a middle american white-hipster crowd with topics about raving, skateboarding, paris fashion week, over-the-counter drugs, college girls, equestrian horseback riding…etc etc

Again, this is a generalization I’m sure someone will try to checkmate me by posting some obscure one-song refrence.

Before the late 2000’s rappers came along it wasnt a lot of skinny jean wearing black people who were comfortable enough to bump lil wayne and chill with their white homies at UCLA. The new rappers have opened up a new market and they also have given us new themes in hip hop in general.Do a random search for Lil Wayne or Young Jeezy on twitter…you’re going to find more non-blacks that blacks. You have these new rappers to thank for turning hip hop into something for EVERYONE and not just “nigga music” and Will Smith doesnt count.

And I read something a page or two back about disliking Kanye West, but the thing about Kanye is he doesnt want to change the world and he doesnt want your acceptance. Everyone contradicts themselves, everyone is wavy in their ideals its what makes us human. Kanye is extravagant and gaudy and manipulative with words, its his style. Thats who he is, and his flavor is welcomed by me in a hip hop game that was rapping about grillz and air force ones a couple years ago. Rick Ross got niggas out here trying to step they shit up and get some red bottoms. Jay, Wale, Dre, Drake, Big Sean…its all about name dropping and labels. Kanye started that for the 2000s, like it or not. Everyones on that now. Co-signing your favorite new indie band Kanye (Mr Hudson), Jay (M.i.a., EOtS), Wale (Diplo), Drake (SBTRKT, Lykki Li) hip hop has networked beyond BET and Hot97…thank these new niggas for making it possible for everybody to find their place in the game and make some money.

Yall be hating for no reason.

Another “Creative Company”…as if we need more of these.

I’m a Kanye fan but this will in no way have any impact or shape on REAL production.

This is just another attempt at being “social”

People are so hung up on “networking” that they barely bring any literal productivity from it.

Social media has fooled people into thinking that just having ideas is enough. We need real technological and manufacturing innovation…not just another think-tank of people wearing expensive clothes on tumblr.

EDIT: It sounds EXACTLY like Entertainment 720 from Parks and Recreation.

Another entity lacking any real substance or legitimacy.

Start rambling about random celebrities, rich people, and “IMAGES” they portrayed and now you think you can change the world with nebulous ideas.

People will say I’m hating but read that twitter stream again…where in ANYWHERE did he actually say what he was going to do that people with real companies are currently trying to do.
No goals, just ideas. No objectives, just thoughts.
Even Steve Jobs and Richard Branson had to stop dreaming and get real and PRODUCE.
Its just an excuse to be “creative” and “artsy” for the sake of being “creative and artsy” without PRODUCT…without LITERAL IMPACT.

I know people actually in art school and design school with these same ideas…but the difference is that they are in tune with reality enough to actually bring about change through literal means…not random sparse language about things they really don’t understand and want to influence without actually doing so.

There IS a real design world out there…but those people actually…DESIGN…they actually DO things…they MAKE things…they CREATE literal objects…Kanye is just bumping his gums while the rest of you all get to make new tumblr posts.

This is just another “movement” of his.

That statement is from a friend of mine on a forum.

Is that from HypeBeast? I remember a big discussion in the comments about Kanye’s DONDA Project.

after joining tumblr all I see is groups of similar niggas talkin about label this design that, clothing line there and I don’t see the innovation

It’s from the site your not supposed to talk about. Being honest here

But I just said Kanye isnt trying to change the world. This nigga was at the Occupy Wall Street rallies in 800 dollar t-shirts and thousand dollar frames. Lol. That doesnt make him in-genuine, that makes him Kanye. If he would have worn something from Gap he would have gotten shit for the same thing.

I’m not defending any of his faux-movements or political stances. I’m talking about his contribution to hiphop, which is more significant than ANY other rapper that came out at the same time as him. Am I lying?

I would have rather-ed you not said anything, if you disagree feel free to express yourself man. But dont respond with stuff like that, I’m not asking for much.

Dat /2nd letter/ ???

It’s just his gimmick for the year .last year was Rosewood and euro trash clothes . He is talking about changing the world and playing wit the hopes and dreams of people who are too willfully ignorant to know better that’s the problem to me. It ain’t hating it’s just me saying this is a terrible charade . I’m guessing his next album tour is gonna be crazy visually.

His contribution to hip hop is respected. I love hip hop but we don’t need a billion sub genres to let garbage non rapping non hiphop making niggas room to have space on the shelves all I see is watered down mediocre niggas these days who only brings being difference to the table with no skills or amazing beats.

your post wasn’t worth a full response because it full of ducktales.

I don’t think ANY tour can beat Glow in the Dark. So much eye and ear piff. People left like they were on MDMA

This nigga Ye is hiring video game designers. I swear I said in Vol. 6 that E3 is gonna be the new Source Awards. The final frontier of niggas

Is there a music recommendation service that can recommend based on just instrumentals?

I’ve tried pandora before and wondered what all the hype was about. Maybe I wasn’t using it right. But I know longevity for a song lies in the beat almost as much (if not more than) the lyrics. Unless the lyrics just suck. Like Kidd Kidd on Shooting Guns. Way to ruin a hype ass song.
But do you guys know of any services like that?
