Got you
The Geto Boys - We Can’t Be Stopped. – you most likely never heard this album all the way through. Just the lead single Mind is Playin Tricks on Me. You really need to hear this all the way through. An yes the album cover was made the moment bushwick bill was released from the hospital from shootin his own eye out
Scarface - Mr. Scarface is Back – Defined by gritty rhymes Face stepped out from the geto boys an into my world (an yours) on his solo effort recorded strictly in his basement in a closet.
Gangsta N-I-P - The South Park Psycho – Respected by damn near every artist in the lone star state NIP birthed your psychotic bushwick bill…three 6… pastor troy…brotha lynch and according to willie d possibly the only artist to invite you to a show to get your ass whooped… this album set a different tone from the pure gangsta side of houston an most likely sampled on gangsta albums during the mid 90s
Scarface - The Diary – Get this in your life. Storytelling is a art form that only a select few artist can do over a span of a album…Face does it with precision and detail that at some point you really wonder what the hell he was on.
Eightball and MJG - Coming Out Hard – Memphis was still stuck in the underground we stay in our city type attitude… but Primro and Marlon took sail an put Memphis on the map.
DJ Screw - 3 in da Morning – “who is the king of da south…Robert Davis muthafucca now shut up an sit down” - Pimp C . Trust me there is a screw tape that will appeal to you but 3 in da morning (screw notorious recording time) gives the outsider a look at what screw music is. If i told you one verse on this album created 7 hits during the mid 2000 texas run would you believe me? Look it up.
OutKast – Southernplayalisticcadillacmusik – “ I rip shyt with pimp shyt im slangin it from the south… talk bad about the A town ill bust u in ya fuccin mouth” – Andre Benjamin. My favorite line from him EVER. I know everyone has their preferred kast album but this set it off an needs to be heard… NEEDS to.
UGK – Super Tight – Not the first album… but a defining album that showed just like outkast that a lyricist and a street smart mc can create a album that’s worth listening AND help define other artist.
Master P presents: Down South Hustlers – The FIRST southern compilation that created paths for unknown southern artist and EVEN west coast and Midwest artist.
Tela – Piece of Mind - - To me… I feel people need to hear this album to hear Memphis soulful/chill side. Jazzy Pha and Tmix worked the hell out of the boards for this album. A must hear for the southern listener.
Goodie Mob – Soul Food - - “What ch’all know bout da dirty south…” – Cool Breeze. Emotion and meaning in a album. 4 SWAT raised mc created a classic underneath the sounds of organized noise.
Master P – Ice Cream Man - - It needs to be heard but please note I had a issue with this album. People say it’s a southern album……its actually a West Coast built album with 2-3 songs actually having that ‘southern feel’. Nonetheless it’s a must and staple in the Percy Miller catalog.
Triple Six Mafia (kna Three 6 Mafia) – Mystik Stylez - - Dark and Gangsta with a touch of the Memphis created Atlanta remade it crunk style. Needs to be heard if you want to hear the beginning sound of Dj Paul and Juicy J (though by the time this album hit shelves they were years in the game).
Eightball & MJG – On Top of The World - - My favorite album out of their catalog. A defining album for not only the mid south but Tony Drapers Suave House imprint that had to contend with crosstown rival Rap-a-Lot.
UGK – Riding Dirty - - When I use to recommend this album… I would give the person a dub of it instead of talking about. Today I will send you a copy of it. It IS a staple of a southern must…a MUST. Pimp C’s creativity and arranging showed Texas as its finest. If Jay Z heard it and loved it during a time where Rap was segregated it showed its power. Get this if you don’t get ANY other album I have listed.
Outkast – ATLiens - - Rico Wade took the lead and set the atmosphere for the album which was rare for the time of album making… top that with arranging by big boi and you’ve created a southern masterpiece. I think there isn’t a person that loves rap that cant say Andres verse on elevators…
TRU – Tru to Da Game - - To me…………THE BEST produced album out of the whole catalog of No Limit. Percy, Vyshawn, and Cory aka Master P, Silkk da Shocker, and Cmurder made sure that No Limit Had a place in the southern sound after returning from mediocre west coast standings with a definite album to challenge a then unheard of crosstown rival… yet that crosstown rival already had
Hot Boyz – Get it How You Live - - The notorious Williams Brothers already was making noise in the NO/Texas (the I10 connection) corridor with previous releases. Yet with the help of Pimp C and Bun B they brought together 4 rappers that would separate themselves an present the PURE new Orleans by way of already established bounce dj/beatmaker Mannie Fresh
5th Ward Boyz – Rated G - - Rap a lot always had something or in this case someone up their sleeve. The 5th ward boyz brought a pure hood album that could contend with the dominance of the west coast during the time.
Three 6 Mafia – Chapter2: World Domination - - It has songs that were banned in clubs… It defined Memphis across the board from gangsta to crunk. I don’t think there is a southern artist that didn’t appreciate that “3-6” shyt. If I had to introduce you to them as a group this would be the album… mystikal stylez was a treat of the old mix tape days. This album showed not only growth but what crunk an gangsta shyt was.
Young Bleed – My Balls and My Word – WHO? Your most likely asking… trust me you know him. A unique voice… selective on his beats that bring that ol’ feel… an a storyteller that makes you feel like one of ya boys tell you a story of everyday shyt. A must listen.
Scarface – Untouchable - - Listen. He made this album cause people thought he retired after the facemob flop. Annnn that ended that.****
Pastor Troy – We Ready - - You most likely remember it as Face Off a few years later. A must listen cause this is a introduction to a energetic and MAD troy… majority of the album was aimed at a then dominant Master P…
Goodie Mob - Still Standing - - Some say ya second album will make or break you… Goodie Mobs second album exceeded expectation and arguably made you forget about the 1st album!
Devin the Dude – The Dude - - This album can be played front to back. Laid back to the fullest and plenty of comedy to boot. Devin made a name for himself outside of his group (the odd squad) with this southern classic.
Geto Boys - The Resurrection – “…you cried when yo granmaw’ died an that was real-- but u aint gotta cry no mo’ u goin to see ya…” - Willie D. I literally dont need to say anything else but listen to this all the way threw an tell em if you dont calm down after bein mad.
I stopped because there are more but I can go on n on n on… so let me lay down some artist you may want to venture into (may add on as i think):
Mia X (get her early stuff… like good girl gone bad)
Mystikal (not always great full albums but still… good songs)
Big Mike (does this bump to you…ok. Find more)
Crime Boss (emotion…gritty. Like doc we lost a great artist due to vocal damage)
NOLA ( you will find these chicks on rap a lot albums)
Playa Fly (possibly the best member to come out of the 3-6 camp)
Paul Wall & Chamillionaire (as a group…)
Lil Keke (the texas don… don’t play…seriously don’t play)
Dj Squeeky (Dj Pauls rival and Unreallystics long lost twin)
Hitman Sammy Sam (the original atl hype man)
Cool Breeze (I actually miss this guy)
Mississippi Mafia (find em an mess ya speakers up)
South Circle (a slept on first album an they vanished into solo world)
Mr. Mike (part of the group above… expect he vanished after a cool album)
Dirty (trust me… these guys are cool as hell…an the FIRST to rep Alabama)
Dj Sound (just find the early stuff if you enjoyed that dark Memphis sound)
Tre 8 (one of my favorite hidden gems outta the NO)
T-Rock (my favorite southern solo artist as of right now… his old stuff still bumps too)
