The top shoes, my retro J9s - the only thing that keeps the foot locked down are the shoe laces - thats pretty typical, however this will bend and flex and stretch, and you are a bit limited with it. On my work out shoes below that though - you can see the flywire going to each eyelast. The benefit is simply its sturdier and easier to get that lock down fit, so even if they were a tiny bit big, it would still work out extremely well. Nike hit a homerun with their 2011 Hypderdunk & Hyperfuse line-up.
