The Rap Thread: News, Reviews, Rants, Opinions Vol 8 - We still don't know bout Wu-Tang

Anybody on Son of Ran, underground MC out of the Bay area? I first got hooked on him in 2009 and today I have 5 of his albums. I recently rediscovered him in the library. His “debut” if you could call it that, Tribute to Sky City, is available for free [legally] on the internet if you hunt a bit.

This track, Brief Soul, is pretty good. He’s a Bboy and a lot of his music** **is meant for breaking and it shows. He has this whole collab album with Memphis Reigns and the track Cali to Japan is nice enough too; here it is.

I also recommend **For The Wax **from the album Incoming Message.

I’m not a fan of some of his production, but I like what he stands for and his lyricism.

Yo I know we were talkin about mastering in production not too long ago. I just came across this interview with the RZA and he speaks on his new headphones coming out, and speaks on mastering and production in general.

if someone is mixing/mastering your project with headphones on, take your masters/DAT/whatever and go elsewhere. Its fine ot give them a listne thru headphones, but that kind of work should be done pretty much exclusively on monitors.

And I officially co-sign the new Fif…adding it to my BoB mixtape rotation.

I agree with you on the mastering tip. I was just thinking about what the Rza said about the Beats headphones. I thought I was the only one who didn’t like them, but he basically had a different perspective on it. And for me I will work on music with studio headphones, but I never finalize it without listening to it through monitors, oh and I also do the car test as well.

YEah I ‘make’ songs with headphones on, but as soon as I’m mixing and mastering a track the headphones come off. I got some Bose ‘normal audio’ speakers on my computer, then in my listening area I got some Polk monitors, then I have my Ac for the car test. You actually want to run it thru a couple/few different car setups if you can…with subs, without subs, radio quality.
EDIT - and I now have a super cheap 5.1 sound system for the entertainment area that can function for basic positioning/balancing/etc. Nothing fancy though, my budget was like 50 bux haha.

And yeah Dre’s headphones actually suck for anything not hip-hop related - which means they aren’t accurate for shit. They are designed to make what you listen to sound better - not for an ‘accurate’ response to what you are listening to. That why despite me LOVING the way they look, I’ve never reached out to buy a pair (thought on it, but couldn’t justify it since they weren’t studio headphones - which I CAN justify spending real loot on). Here’s a real review here from a site that could careless about them being from ‘dre’ - http://www.hardocp.com/article/2011/08/11/beats_by_dr_dre_studio_headphones_review/

I agree with that review bruv. When I first tried them out I said to myself 'this can’t be all they have to offer" but sure enough they were just okay. I have a couple of headphones that I use but the Sennheiser HD 280 pro’s are my favorite. For me they are just very comfortable, and honestly with the years of DJing and playing music on loud soundsystems, I noticed that my ears are a bit more sensitive to certain noises. But I plan on upgrading real soon, I just want to get something I can use for both production and gigs.

I have some old AKGs that I’ve used since like 03. They’ve done me great, but I do have some non-audio issues with them. However I’m not purchasing headphones for a while, its just not worth the cost tbh.

  • :bluu:

Yo man I feel you on that. I am a firm believer in getting the full use out of my equipment. So if these headphones ever die, then i will buy a new pair. but I already don’t like spending money as it is, so these will have to last me for a while.

i’m on a boat! w/ my lady. got that asian glow after a few glasses of chardonnay. boat shoes ftw

Nothin says gangsta like postin up by the pepsi machine…

“yo! someone kick a beat on the side soon as tameka walk by so i can freestyle bout her phat ol’ ass…”

Ai man, music room was the first door around the corner on the left.

True story, my first ‘D’ in school was in music. Fukkin bullshit ass course. We were supposed to be playing shit out on these keyboards they had, but they were the size of some fisher price shit, so granted I’m like 12 or 13 at the time, but at 13 I was 6’3 - so that shit was too small for me to play out melodies without hittin other keys. I got perfect scores on all the other instruments, but 36 of the 50 units were piano and I only got thru like ten of’em. So much ass taste on that.

But yeha I thought was the shit, Kangol, FRESH Reeboks wit hthe black jeans and a non-tshirt. Nobody could tell me shit hahaha. that was what 94/95?
