^ Mmmh, that kinda jogged my memory! CvS2 definitely isn’t the only game now that I’m thinking about it, that definitely happens in XvSF too, and apparently there were dudes who could actually time the shuffle well enough to consistently get a specific character.
I’ve been playing PSN Scoreboard Quick Matches, and just counting every selection I get. I won’t bother totalling until I have a lot more results.
I use the left random square exclusively.
I’ve been trying to vary the time I wait too, but I’m sure being a human being I have a few approximate levels of unintended consistency with these.
I have been switching up the button I use whenever I remember to not just spam fierce, haha.
I actually just had two Ryus in a row just a short while ago so everything’s fine there! I still strongly suspect that it will never choose Akuma, though.
Yeah, I had a friend who fould the codes in Alpha 1 too hard to remember and just learned to time his button press on random when he wanted Dan, Akuma or Bison. He was 100% accurate.
Also, if I remember, Akuma, Dan and Bison were all available via random in SFA1 even when not unlocked. Am I right?
So, I recently spent about 2 days playing HD and SFIV all day on both days (like, 12 hours each or something). I used random about 90% of the time, and really enjoyed it. Of my two opponents, one was using random about 40-50%.
My results? Fei-Long most often. Lots of Cammy, then Zangief, and Chun. Ken in the middle, I think with Blanka and some of the bosses. None stand out as not getting picked much.
As for a definition of random, they would need to be independent, and this would mean that the order would matter, not just the final count for each character. Are you more likely to get Hawk after Honda? Stuff like that.
And yes, I suppose another selection algorithm would be quickly to cycle through them randomly (or even not randomly), and the selection is made when you hit the button. I doubt that this is the case, but it might help if somebody was to record it and play back in slowmo.
Yeah, if you play for long enough, a true random number generator will give you Ryu 10 times in a row at one point.
Yeah, like a deck of cards, you don’t get repetition until they’re all gone…
I always seem to get Vega, Fei Long Chun Li and sometimes Dhalsim. These are probably the characters I use least and are not very good with (except Dhalsim who I’m getting used to). On the other hand, the characters I do use (Ken, Zangief, Ryu, Deejay) seem to appear rarely.
Most likely just a coincidence, or that I take more notice when I don’t get my good characters, but it sometimes made me wonder if random would give you characters you didn’t use much. I know that is unfounded and doesn’t make sense as it wouldn’t exactly be random, but that’s how it feels.
