The Queen of MAHVELL 3!: The Morrigan GD Thread

To the first question, yes. You can see the timer very easily with Doom’s corner loops. The faster you go, the more reps you get.

To the second question, usually with an assist, but if Morri has them, her j.S should make comboing off them solo fairly easy, but she may need to set them up with an assist still. Watch Rayray play Ryu, he’s fairly constantly doing fuzzy guard break set ups.

I would test stuff like that myself but I dont currently have access to a console. I’m going to a tournament on sunday so maybe I could experiment then if I remember. It would be cool if someone could do some experimenting themselves and report back.

What do you guys do for incoming with Morrigan? I’m learning Mags/Morri/Doom and I often end up killing the opponent’s point character with Morrigan. Right now I just set up a zoning game since I have no idea how to play Morrigan yet but I’m guessing she has some really good setups I could use.

Call Doom Missiles and go into Astral Vision and begin your spam session.

Try throwing an air Soul Fist H and dash under if they’re not in the corner.

If they try to press something : jump towards, j.L j.M j.H xx H Soul Fist Fly combo (if you lucky they try to push block te Soul Fist, fly cancel push block -> you get free throw)

Morrigan is the best character in the game!!! Yea dat.

My beta setup for morrigan/dante/ammy: normal jump, call dante, soul drain, air dash over the incoming opponent, shell kick

I just noticed something that should have been obvious to me, but wasn’t, and others might benefit from it.

So, Morrigan could always do Soul Drain -> Shadow Servant to end a combo.

Morrigan doesn’t like to end combos with hypers in Astral Vision, though, because it’s effectively spending 2 bars of meter on one hyper worth of damage.

However, if Astral Vision is up, you can end a combo with Soul Drain -> Shadow Servant, and while only one Shadow Servant comes out (of course), two Soul Drains do, and both can connect from anywhere! This effectively steals 60% of a bar of meter from your opponent. With the combo you just did, you effectively earned back a bar of meter for Astral Vision again!

Again, really obvious, but it just clicked with me.

mindblown Why didn’t I think of this lol.

Time to work on Astral vision combo’s again.

Too bad that it’s so hard going into AV in mid combo

Yeah also most combos in AV end up putting you in awkward positions after you land from flying screen. I cant tell where I’m gonna end up half the time in AV.

Flying screen you can mitigate some…although I can’t remember how. I was on a big AV combo kick near the end of vanilla, and had worked out how to get them to land properly. If you just hit that shit max height, and off say, Shadow Blade M xx fly, j.S they get hit only by the first of 6 possible flying screen hits, and fly off into the middle of nowhere. If you can hit all 6 j.S hits, they’ll fall straight down with you though. I just can’t remember the set up for that.

I’ve been playing with Morrigan in casuals, I’m not terribly consistent with her yet, but with Jam Session she feels incredibly hard to touch. Does anyone have the names of Morrigans who use DP into fly cancel for positioning/space control well? It seems strong and I want to observe some Morrigans to get more optimal stuff for her. That said, Viper with Morrigan’s Dark Harmonizer lets me zone until I have tons of meter and then if I don’t need to use it with Viper Morrigan/Dante with 5 bars is pretty solid.

Not too many Morrigans with a lot of footage out there, and especially not ones that use DP for space/positioning. Might have to do some searching.

I use DP flight cancel alot. Its an amazing movement tool. I reccomend cancelling the recovery of her j.S into M shadow blade when using j.S to pressure. If the j.S gets push blocked the cancel into DP into flight cancel into air dash can help you get back in. j.S cancelled into M shadow blade also combos on hit so its good to hit confirm with. M shadow blade cancelled into flight at the apex of the dragon punch leaves you above morrigans air dash threshold so Its easy to continue pressure.

Against characters without a fast beam, doing H shadow blade to protect missiles then dashing in is a a good strategy. Shadow blade flight cancel is also great at the start of the round and when you’re incoming against someone who hasnt timed a properly meaty setup.

Take a look and the Japanese player JEO, he got the best movement Morrigan I’ve seen. (Though I haven’t seen any recent matches of him)

I played a pretty long casual set against some friends, Morrigan is so fast. X_X I really enjoy this character a lot. I notice that I have a lot more room to mess up my execution with her than with Viper, but that she still has some high execution stuff to do. The more I play her, the more I like her with Jam session over missiles, if she keeps herself at a little past Vergil’s standing H range very few characters have the tools to fight offensive use of soulfists paired with Jam session.

Any cool combo extension with it? (probably some AV stuff or one more meter steal)
