Maybe Morrigan’s s.H should be a standing overhead or something.
Her standing L my not be She Hulks cL, but it still has more range than a lot of other low hitting lights in the game, and at 4 frames it’s one of the fastest. Really never had issues running high/low with Morrigan at all. left/right isn’t even so bad with box jump H, so long as you set it up off a Vector Drain, or an assist. She really does just get low mileage out of assist compared to other characters though. Morrigan would absolutely be a dominant character if MvC3 were a 1v1 fighter, but she’s a really poor team player overall.
She would also be a lot better if everyone else didn’t do so much damage, but the developers obviously have no interest in going that direction with the game.
Nooneyouknow, do you have any footage of you playing? You sound like a knowledgeable player, and I don’t get to see many competent Morrigan players outside of XF3 stuff.
Negative. And while I agree with knowledgeable(I really hate being wrong, eating crow isn’t fun), I tend to fall apart in actual matches unless I’m playing simple shit, or people much worse than I am. I just make a note of what works in what set up so I can generally pass it on to people with hands that do what they want.
My play with Morrigan is a lot of fireball zoning, dropped combos, finding room to tag to Storm and make it rain with Dark Harmonzer, or XF3 comebacks. I mean, I blow up locals, and do better against other people than my training partner does, but he tends to beat me down like 4-1. And I don’t stay calm all that well, yay fiery temper. I might try to record some matches later though, and see if I can put up some where I don’t blow it big time.
And since it’s Morrigan related, Min is streaming VS and CvS2 causals/tourney right now http://www.twitch.tv/min2012
You should watch JJJ’s Morrigan on recorded streams. He uses Morrigan on point and makes some very good use of assists.
Ah, I know what you mean Nooneyouknow. I get the same thing with Dormammu. I’m a solid player, but I’m nothing special. I am very passionate about knowing everything about Dormammu and conveying what knowledge I can. So I get a ton of people randomly friending me on PSN to play “the great Dormammu”, and when people beat me in random matches I get trash talked a lot because I’m supposed to be this amazing thing in their head.
In my mind, Dormammu is one of the most team-dependent characters in the game. I change my team every other week, so I often have to relearn a lot of things constantly, because he’s not Wolverine; you have to approach everything in a unique way. It looks like UMvC3 is furthering that about him, and I appreciate that.
@Shiizu: I’ll look him up, thanks
I have the occasional day when I’m on and I don’t drop anything, and I hit all of my set ups properly, but they’re not as common as I’d like. I find keeping my practice sessions to around 20 minutes a day, and working on multiple characters at once has been allowing for much more rapid combo execution improvement than my old hour a day sessions. I’m happy if I figure something worthwhile out and pass it on, or just give people (who ask nicely) advice.
Been saying the same thing for months. She doesn’t really need assists to cover any major weakpoints and doesn’t have any particularly bad match-ups, but she also doesn’t add much to a team. Meter assist is thing that really makes her unique, but it’s not particularly useful to anyone besides zoners because that’s the only playstyle that won’t be building much meter from combos.
I prefer to play her strictly in anchor position as a compliment to a pair that more or less acts as if she’s not on the team, using XF3 with her to clean up if I don’t score any happy birthdays with my points or something. More or less like a Phoenix-lite, and since she does okay against Phoenix herself it’s usually a workable gameplan.
Well, she has one atrociously bad match up against Dormammu. Shit is like 2-8 if he remembers to keep a carpet down. ON the other hand, it’s an easy 8-2 if he doesn’t, so that shit is gonna be free with Ultimate if they don’t do anything else to change the match up. Ammy might also be as bad as a 3-7, but I’m not quite sure on that one yet, so I usually cite it as a 4-6. Taskmaster is also a 4-6, and I’d put Trish at a 3-7 or 4-6 as well. Trish just does everything Morrigan does better, and in ways that make it very hard for Morrigan to fight it.
I think Dormammu will stay a difficult matchup for Morrigan, since now he can use Purification in the air. His c.M still stuffs all of her approaches along with her fireballs as well.
i personally cringe when my morrigan is alone
i understand the whole astral xflvl3 soul fist frenzy, i do
but are you going to do that when you don’t have a life lead?
if the opponent super jumps to the corner on repeat, how do you beat that? especially if you don’t have the meter
dorm is unbelievable hard(i agree with 2-8), ammy is annoying(i agree with 2-8), trish is frustrating(i’d say 4-6 not 3-7 though)
I play Morrigan as an anchor and sometimes have to face entire teams alone. The trick is to stay unpredictable. Launching Soul Fists from the ground, even using the flight cancel method, can be avoided pretty easily, so mix it up. Lay down some grounded Soul Fists, super jump toward your opponent and rain some death from above. They might get blocked, but at least it will help keep them on the ground which is where you want them.
Astral Vision and setting up Soul Fist frenzy is a good way to start, and if you actually land a hit, they are basically dead right there so long as you don’t flub an input. However, you’ll need to switch it up on them if they manage to start defending and you’re on the losing end of the life lead. One method is to throw out a fire light Soul Fists to get them blocking, then do a heavy Shadow Blade, flight cancel that and then downward dash into an overhead of your choice. You’ll suddenly be in their face and depending on how close they were to you, perhaps even crossing them up.
The real problem Morrigan faces as anchor is not being able to really convert air throws into damage. People who know this will just back jump all day long, stuff themselves into a corner and just turtle. Without an assist to keep her opponents grounded, her mixup and damage potential is basically neutered. Astral Vision and Soul Fists can help in this case because you might catch them with a Soul Fist during the brief period they’re on the ground and put them into blockstun, though you’ll have to capitalize on this immediately.
Another method I employ sometimes is to just feign helplessness, or just tactfully retreat for awhile. This works well against opponents who smell blood and feel on the verge of victory, so sometimes they will get reckless. This is where Shadow Servant and X-Factor can quickly turn the tides. If you catch them coming at you and they’ve also called out an assist, Shadow Servant and then X-Factor immediately. You can follow Shadow Servant up with a dash h. Shadow Blade into Finishing Shower (harder), or simply Shadow Servant X-Factor dash Shadow Servant (easier). Either method will likely at least kill the assist character and severely wound or flat out kill the point character, leaving the anchor slot at your mercy.
For assists with Morrigan, I like running Shuma with her. They complement each other pretty well in DHC and assists. Especially the mystic stare. Then Taskmaster takes care of any holes that might have been overlooked. After sometime of using Morrigan’s meter builder assist for Shuma to get an earlier 3 hyper, I changed to shadow blade in exchange for a quick hit in. It works well for the shuma balls and Tasky’s arrow barrage. It doesn’t hurt that both Shuma and Morrigan can color match too. If only I can find one more good pink char.
Im curious, watched some umvc 3 footage and was wondering if people knew whether or not morrigan still has her regular fireball or are all her fireballs changed to the meter stealing one now? That would be awesome since it means her assist is also gonna be the meter stealer.
She just has a new fireball, which is qcf.S. Her assist is (currently) still just the normal version.
Aii cool thanks for clearing that up, hopefully though they change the assist to the new one, I think it’ll be a very nice tool to have and will add some depth to your choice of assist with her. Do I go for free meter or do I go for the chance of stealing meter from my opponent?
It certainly would make her Soul Fist assist more useful. I would probably stick with Dark Harmonizer just because it’s a really safe assist (only vulnerable for 10 frames, like Double Lariat), and I think that’s worth sacrificing some offense for.
Im still trying to figure out why Morrigan is low-tier besides health… cr. L… omfg… Im so free to that shit…
It’s mainly because of her damage output.
