Steam controller is itās own tier. Godlike for some games when you can make use of all the cool ass functions and customizeable control schemes , C tier for others.
Thatāll assume competitive shooters and games that would ideally demand pixel perfect precision mobas etcā¦
Generally regular controllers are ass for those, steam controller a bit better but never recommended. The haptic pad or whatever is kinda similar to a trackball in use, there are some people out there that got sick with it but itās not ideal.
For MMOs it really depends. FFXIV has a godlike controller scheme and allowed me to have like 8 hotbars being completely accessible mid movement all on controller. Thereās communities out there that shared a steam controller profile for FFXIV and allowed mouse input on the trackpad when you used the controller grip buttons to activate the function. As someone that had like 81+ useable binds back when i did WoW arena and swore by keyboard and mouse, that steam controller layout for FFXIV felt really good played melee. Only exception is that I wouldnāt ever use controller for doing something that requires mouse over macros.
I can imagine other mmos not cutting it otherwise if they donāt have great controller support.
Reason why I iād put it in itās own tier is because itās likely best as a controller youād want on the side next to your main controller whenever you run into a game thatāll take full advantage of it. Steam community is rather active and thereās always a couple out there with profiles to share.
Doom beta was reasonably fun. But I doubt the game is going to have any staying power. Itāll come out, be the hot thing for a month or two, and then the multiplayer will dry up substantially.
-Didnāt particularly care for the demon power up, as it just seems like easy kills. Hack modules are mostly benignā¦but Iām not how they will play out in the final product Weapon and armor customization is a nice little break from the action.
-Loadout system isā¦kind of dumbā¦as it means everything is ānormalizedā to the point of nothing being that greatā¦I guess the replacement is the power weapons and demon pick upsā¦which in theory is niceā¦but neither of them takes any real skill to use. Its just a matter of point and shoot. The revenant rockets do tons of damage and splash, so you donāt need to be accurate. The guass rifle has a very large hitbox, is hitscan. great at all ranges and does a ton of damage, so as long as you point it at someoneā¦they die.
-Matchmaking was ok. Got into matches quickly, but occasionally, the teams end up lopsided. It is a HUGE disadvantage to have fewer players on your team and youāll probably get steamrolled.
-Connections/hit detection was kind of wonky. Getting hit by a sniper when you are clearly already around a cornerā¦having your shotgun pellets sail through an enemyā¦then getting killed instantly by their shotgun. I didnāt feel like there was enough feedback when getting hit. I mean, if it is a rapid fire weapon, like the machine gun, it is pretty obviousā¦but against rockets, snipers and shottys, it felt like I was going from full health and then someā¦to dead in an instant. Or going from full health to somebody teleporting up and glory killing you. Hopefully the netcode is improved.
-Graphics are ok. Again hopefully some drivers are released along with the game that really lets it take advantage of your hardware. Doom 3, for all of its faultsā¦at least was a looker when it came out.
-Sound was also just āokā, did the dark and forboding music alrightā¦but in some need of some badass metal and or industrial tracks to get you riled up. What was not ok, was the announcer. Who was tepid and boring. Like, it just sound like some dude. The announcer should sound like an axe murderer at a monster truck rally. Or a robot that learned how to feel sexual pleasure from violence. Or satan. They should have gotten Satan to do the voice over.
All in all, it kind of reminded me of Haloā¦which is funny because it means weāve come full circle.
Overwatch was ok. Polished. Stylishly designed. Butā¦kind of vapid. Itās like a big bowl of candy. I can see the game doing well with the (I dislike this term) casual market. But I donāt see myself getting into it.
I was going to get CoD: Advanced Warfare on Steam since itās on saleā¦but I read it has trouble on Windows 10.
Also I read that it lags on single-player.
Kinda a shame really that they only offered 3 of the maps for the stress test, 2 of which I feel are weaker maps, been playing on another account that got in since closed beta. Route 66 being a recent map thatās the only map out of the current roster that i feel extremely eh about as the cargo escort map, and Hanamura that can be kinda annoying to break in a proper defense for the first point I feel theyāll likely address this, 2nd point is alright though. Napal is fun.
Mostly agree with you. Gameās fun enough for casuals to just yuck it up and nut everytime they wipe a team, entirely team based so that scrubs can blame others when theyāre properly dealing with their opponents comp, matches are quick so they can jump in, jump out, and most characters are easy enough to know how to play at a basic level. Not to mention how much the average playerbase loves shit like lootboxes with the chance of a neat looking skins as a reward for leveling their accounts (after wading through shit lootboxes of course).
Stress test matchmaking was interesting and reminded me of what launch is going to be like. Higher ranks of closed beta matchmaking basically had either people with their favorite characters or roles completely down, or had people well aware of what characters to swap mid match to counter pick/synergize/map specific strats etc⦠Lots of active strategies to beat the opponentās comp with the opposing team doing the same generally to some degree.
Stress test matchmaking⦠kinda felt awkward with all the sub 10s. Like thereād be PLENTY with clearly amazing aim and just bulldozed with only their past fps experience but of course matches as a whole it felt just messy overall, just feels weird when both teams feels clueless and just presses the objective face first with you not having too much to do strategy wise aside from shitting on their team single handedly and hopefully your team follows up on the momentum, normally itās just 1 team being clueless at worst. Certainly makes it feel pretty vapid after seeing this perspective.
Though bottom line I still ultimately agree with you. I do feel that this game will simply be intentionally the Hearthstone of FPS; Simple to get into, will have a MASSIVE player base due to casuals + blizzard fans alone⦠competitive wise iād much rather wait until they release abit more characters to really judge. Feel it needs a good dozen more characters to cover more of the roles for varieties sake example being there being a slight lack of dedicated tank roles, Reinhart i feel is the only true dedicated tank, healers are lower in character count as of now compared to other roles.
The potential is there but itāll take awhile for them fully polish the game on the competitive end. Maps are great for the most part.
TL;DR gameās fun, yuck it up with a friend like you did in TF2, maybe competitive laddering might be alright but I donāt feel itās as meaty as something like CS:GO. If you donāt have friends to yuck it up, arenāt looking for something to casually play on and off and you want a hearty competitive shooter to get better at, it may or may not be for you. That changes if you do have a full team of friends that is interested in laddering of course.
Got Advanced Warfareā¦and it works on my systemā¦aside from the cutscenes taking a long time no major hiccups.
First time playing FPS on controllerā¦I think I can get used to it.
