The PC gaming Thread. Steam/GOG/Origin/Etc. Game/Software/Hardware talk

I want to make an X99 build soon. I’m thinking about buying a new GPU to hold me over for a bit, then in a year or two dropping over a grand on a completely new build. The only thing I’d re-use would maybe be my current case and PSU.

I have a feeling prices will be more affordable around then. Prices dropped a lot on on DDR4/X99 mobos and the like, 8GB of DDR4 is going for what I paid for my 8GB of DDR3 just a few years ago.

The price:performance ratio of the R9 390 is crazy. I want to see what these HBM GPU’s are going to be capable of. I wonder if once those start trickling in, if GDDR5 is going to completely abandoned/slowly die off or if they’ll still make “new” cards that use that memory.

I’d say cpu, mobo and psu for a long lasting system. Cpus last a long time in terms of game performance. I have a 7 year old cpu that is still perfectly capable.

You can always get a budget gpu while you save up, and then you can just swap in a new enthusiast one down the road.

My mid range system built in 2008 runs modern games 1080p/60fps after just a swap of the gpu. Granted, it is a near to of the line gpu.

Alright, thanks for the advice everyone.

In all seriousness, if you come up with a budget, we can help out putting the pieces together.

I’m still working out what I’ll be able to spend exactly. Can a good PC be built for less than 1000? Like something that will play most stuff at 60fps and 1080p.

Oh ya.

Definitely. I used logicalincrements.com heavily, it’s very helpful. Their “great” tier builds start at $600, and should suit your needs fine. Just beware of the potential for a cpu bottleneck down the line, I would go with at least an 8 core amd or an i5 from that list.

I’m new to this as well, for what it’s worth.

I will definitely check that site out, thanks.

I would also check out here

I’m in the process of building one myself as well.

1000 bucks is plenty.
You’ll get a great PC for 600-700 that will last you very long.
A budget PC for 350-450 will do the SFV job easily as well.

Thinking about getting a new computer chair, and possibly a new desk. What would be recommended?

Looking for a chair that doesn’t sink down to the metal base after a year of use. Computer desk might be something I have to get custom built to my specifications, as my place lacks space for a gigantic desk.

I didnt read most of this shit…but im happy I have a 750w PSU.

Motherfuckin’ Rick Ross…take your ass to places where they carry them shit and test them for yourself. Bitch ass nigga.

P.S. I would recommended a desk like I have and a chair like my friend. But fuck you, I aint about to tell your lazy ass what either manufacturer they from.

Get the fuck out in dat real world and find out for yourself.

I’m on the 750ti/500w PSU struggle as well. Upgrading the GPU means I gotta get a beefier PSU to go along with it.

Interesting read on stated minimum requirements versus what will actually work: http://www.game-debate.com/news/?news=18294&game=Star%20Wars:%20Battlefront%20III&title=Star%20Wars%20Battlefront%20RAM%20Test%20And%20GTX%20750%20Ti,%20GTX%20950%20And%20Radeon%20HD%207950%20Benchmarks

For those who don’t read the link, at the low end they run Star Wars Battlefront, which has some rather beefy minimum requirements, on a GeForce GTX 750 Ti with an AMD FX-4100 CPU and 4GB RAM. It runs 80 fps on low, 60 fps on medium, 44 fps on high, and 34 fps on ultra, all at 1080p.

Then the game is rather well optimized on the PC.
There’s console ports of AAA games that drop frames on high end hardware.

It’s understandable that they go the safe route with their hardware suggestions. Don’t want to have a raging mob of Russians and Brazilians coming after them on the internet if the game does not run.

Also there’s a pretty good thread about gaming PC building in a German computer-nerd forum.
I used it to build my PC and I spend like 400 in order to be able to play all types of new games.
400 Euro are $450 dollars, so keep exchange rates in mind when going through the configurations:

If you wonder why you see no i7’s in that list it is because the small amount of performance that the i7 grants is out of proportion to the extra money you have to spend.
You drop a shitload of bucks on something that only very slightly boosts performance and that money is better spend on a better graphics card.

I’ve decided I’m gonna get the R9 270x or R7 370. I think that’s the highest I can go with my current CPU(Phenom X4 955) without too much bottlenecking, if any.

Out of those two, I’d get the 270x.

out of those two I’d get a ZOTAC 980 TI AMP EXTREME!

I would recommend a mesh chair with a mesh bottom. Those can last.
