@owattjacob Go for the intel core i5-4670 instead of the 4690. The performance boost is negligible for the price and you can reach the same overclocked numbers with both.
You can also opt for a cheaper PSU, 600 should be plenty enough.
the 4670 is looking like 219.99 while he has the 4690k for 209.99 (if from newegg he also gets a $10 gift card) so the 4690k is the much better deal even if he doesn’t plan to overclock.
The only thing I will say is to make sure your motherboard will natively support the Haswell Refresh cpus(4690k) as it is the z87. My z87 motherboard did not support it without a bios flash so I had to get a cheap cpu to update which I was able to return, it was just extra headache and 7 bucks out of pocket, so just be aware of that
Ah alright, where I’m at it’s around ~25$ between the two.
Yea I believe that usually is the difference when not on sale. I would have gotten the 4670 if not for the 4690pk going on sale for 200. I actually would have gotten the 3570k if I could have got it price matched with micro center for 169.99 but I am very happy with my 4690k.
A question for you guys who are into triple a titles. What is the difference between high and ultra? I was playing battlefield 4 yesterday on both settings and did not notice a real significant difference except that my fps dropped from around 85 -96 to about 60-74. I don’t really have trained eyes or even care too much about graphics which is probably why I can’t tell a difference.
I forgot to mention I finished Papo Y Yo.
its ok.
worth maybe like 3 or 4 bucks.
its an artsy 3D platformer…sorta like Alice Madness Returns but without any combat and way way too short of a game to pay anything over 4 bucks. But it was fun while it lasted.
I had no idea Space Channel 5 was on Steam.
That whole Dreamcast Collection has been out there for a while. I think that the games can also be bought individually (I know for a fact that JSR and Sonic Adventure DX/2 are up for individual sale, but I don’t know about Crazy Taxi or Space Channel 5).
Which reminds me, with the recent success of VC on Steam, does anyone think that we’ll get Jet Set Radio Future HD?
Augh the Fractal design cases keeps getting canceled/taken down and the runner up orders end up $50 more.
Welp speaking of which:
A lot of times, the difference between High and Ultra settings in games tend to be with textures, shadows, and anti-aliasing. There are more upgrades that depend on the game, but these are the ones that I find crop up most often.
However, in your case, it sounds you like got an FPS drop for no real discernible improvement, so in terms of practicality, you might as well just stick to high and more consistent FPS.
In terms of personal experience, I find anti-aliasing kills performance fastest, then shadows, then textures. Shadows sometimes I leave on medium even cause it’s one of the harder effects to notice in game, but that’s just me.
I got so hype for JSR3…
Why.
WHY WOULD YOU TEASE US LIKE THAT!
Yea I just can’t really tell the difference at all. I even dropped everything to medium and still couldn’t really tell a difference. I guess I would have to focus on the textures to really see if I can tell any difference but tbh I’m not worried about textures or the scenery or any of that crap really so I guess I will probably keep playin on medium or maybe high. No need to push my system when I don’t really get anything out of it.
Also @owattjacob I was curious about your motherboard and cpu combo being compatible so I plugged them into pc part picker and got the same flag that I got on my build that alerted me to the bios needing to be updated. It would probably be in your best interest to look at the specifics of that motherboard and see the flashing procedures. If you are lucky it may have an option to flash it with just a usb, if not you may have to do like I did. If you don’t want to deal with the headache of worrying about it you might just want to pick up a z97 board as I believe they are all natively compatible.
damnit Yaiba NGZ is hard! fuck! I’m stuck. getting bodied.
My 28" monitor that blew up has officially been replaced. http://m.newegg.com/Product/index?itemnumber=N82E16824236153 is scheduled to arrive tomorrow. Losing 4" will be depressing, but I’m hoping the ips panel and faster response time makes me forget about it. Pretty good deal on it, $115 after rebate.
Got bored of that and shipped it back to Gamefly shortly before cancelling my subscription. It’s an obnoxious kind of hard, not a fun one like DMC3. One part just had the camera all fucked up and zoomed way out with all different types of enemies, couldn’t see shit.
Thanks for the headsup, talked with the guy helping me build and we’re switching to this cpu. http://www.amazon.com/Intel-i5-4670K-Quad-Core-Desktop-Processor/dp/B00CO8TBOW?tag=viglink20248-20
Apparently this is a newer model but its cheaper lol.
well the 4690k is the newer model, it was cheaper because it was on sale. The 4670k is the older model not of the refresh series but still an excellent cpu. Like JuUM stated above the difference between the two isn’t that great, the only I can think of is that the cpu will run a tad a cooler and is better at overclocking but since you are getting the hyper cooler 212 evo the temp should be fine. I can run battlefield 4 in ultra settings on my computer and watch streams in high quality at the same time and my 4690k only reaches about 58-63 degrees and that is with the stock cooler.
I do have a question though, are you getting these items from amazon? If so I see that the difference was like 25 bucks between the two processors. if you are planning to get the build together while the 4690k was still on sale I would put that 25 bucks toward a z97 motherboard rather than going for the 4670k since you are spending it anyway, however that is just a personal thing I would do. For example this looks like a newer version of the motherboard you are currently using and looks like the same price, you would just have to do research to see the main differences.
However like I said this is just a personal thing I would do, your build as is is great and I am by no means an expert I only know about the processors because I actually did research on those when I was getting my build together.
