I don’t know what the big debate is. If you think that there is some sort of a game going on outside of sweep range, that’s fine I guess. I never said “there’s no game outside sweep range, it’s just two people standing still whiffing normals”, what I meant was that there are no options at those ranges that aren’t easily, easily countered by parry that isn’t “walk into sweep range to actually fight”. Zoning with fireballs and other special moves is usually what takes place at mid range and full screen in typical Street Fighter. That is completely absent in Third Strike. Every video of 3S you see, the players are at or just outside sweep range.

3rd STrike had shit fireball and zoning game because their fireball game sucked. Period.

Parrying helps get around it, but it doesn’t nullify it. Heck, Remy had a decent fireball zoning game against certain characters, but again, not because of parry at all, it just lacked options and power so even with the proper punish Remy just did very little damage.

Its the biggest problem when people think about Parry. They don’t know jack shit about 3rd Strike and don’t understand that the game was so out-there in every way about its design that a lot of what it is is not just about parrying.

Believe it or not, slapping parrying on SF4 does not affect the game the way people believe. I know, because I modded the fucking thing.

I mean, yes it changes it, and yes zoning becomes less effective. People can’t be locked down as easily and they can guess things out, particularly out of the air.

Parrying adds an incredible amount of variety and options to a match, and makes the general game far more interesting, particularly the air game.

I don’t even consider that debatable. The fact that 3rd Strike had a thousand other differences has nothing to do with that. Heck, the game even had a character like Oro. The most non-sense character design I’ve ever seen.

My point, everyone blames parrying because they don’t understand a damn thing about it or 3rd Strike. It doesn’T even need to be as strong as in 3rd Strike, particularily in how lenient the timing was and how long the parry freeze was.

People just bash parrying because they don’t like 3rd strike, because they don’t understand anything about it, and just blame parrying becaues its the “big feature” of the game. But that forever will be a clueless, wasted opinion.

Parries CONFIRMED to be in. Suck it haters.

Have they parried a fireball yet in SF5 footage? I don’t remember so I may be wrong. Might be interesting if you can only parry physical moves.

Except it’s not a parry

look at 3:50

it just seems like the strong/fierce move cause that little effect. it happens several times throughout the match. If it were really a parry they would attempt something afterwards and they never did any of the time that effect comes up

Please bring Parry back to Street fighter. It was the best mechanic ever created.

You talking about this here? Yeah, that soooo loooks like a parry. Ain’t shit confirmed.

It honestly looks more like a Just Defense than a parry. The sound effect sounds similar to CvS2’s JD mechanic as well.

The problem is why would Capcom draw so much focus on this if it was “just blocking fierce attacks” ?

There’s a purpose for every second of gameplay in this trailer. Chun Li is doing SOMETHING.

Dude… it’s called attention to detail. She’s blocking a roundhouse kick to her backside. If she’s doing something, it’s certainly not a parry.

Either way they seemed to be going for more realistic blocking in general, which is a nice detail.

Im siding with the theory that theres a “Just-Defense” mechanic in the game where you take no grey-damage for blocking. Because if you pay attention to the new Mike/Fiend gameplay, all attacks do grey damage now.

Delude yourself harder.

It seems they do have some kind of JD. Certain blocks had more hit sparks and a different sound effect.

She is blocking. Jesus.

They are hinting at something though. The guy did say for us to pay attention and we may notice something about the game. So I think its definitely some kind of mechanic. I wouldnt be surprised if its just defend given the fact that all moves are causing grey damage on block. The game may be high damage (which would be very welcomed after SF4)

Well, it looks so bad I don’t even care anymore.

P-Groove/K-Groove parries if anything.

not really convinced about jd or parries. its common for there to be more variety of reel and recovery animations as franchises evolve. tekken and vf starting having staggered recovery from blocked sweeps and all kinds of detailed things like a decade ago. cant trust the sound effects either because theres random variation even when moves hit. sometimes moves make a metal-on-metal clanking noise when they hit, then the same move done at another time sounds normal (eg. chun’s air chain).

considering that you apparently cant win by chip, the presence of grey damage isnt a good enough argument on its own.

Parries are back?
