REMINDER: Two weeks, if any of you guys can make it down it’d def be cool to have some O town people repping that Central Florida competition

So lately I’ve been delving into my mind on what “style” of playing do I have…and I’m talking about more than just rush-down or being lame. I’m thinking of all the little subcategories between them (i.e= footsies, aggressive, risky, careless, random, calm, clutch, reaction-based, mix-ups, meter manager, etc.etc.) As far as SSF4 goes or even MvC3 from the 2 whole months of it…where do you guys think I fit, and what can I do to capitalize on that to become better/stronger?
For me I can think of my style as being mix-up heavy/careless/aggresive/risky/random…and that’s about it. Anything anyone would like to add to my list, or advice on how I can grow upon it? Jebailey, how does one win with random lololol?
Dunno how much it applies to Marvel, but it’s still more about the psychological aspect I guess.
Rafy, for me I don’t necessarily go into the mindset of “rushdown” every match. Instead I just look at each matchup individually, just doing what feels more comfortable for me and what my options are. If I go into the match with only one mindset and my opponent just happens to know how to counter my tactics, I need to be able to adjust on the fly and switch things around before I get sent home.
Sure, you can pick a character where he/she excels in. But in a balanced game like Super you need to know how to be versatile (even if you counterpick, you need to know how to use a playstyle you’re not used to), no way around it. You can’t just play lame against Sim without first scoring a few hits on him, and unless you knock Gief with an untechable KD first you’re probably not gonna go for an attack.
It’s all about learning matchups and knowing your options.
I have that problem too and that’s why I don’t anywhere near well in tournaments.
Emphasis on Careless/Risky/Random. You don’t think half the time when you play. It’s almost always autopilot. You have to be able to actually use your brain instead of “OMG TRI JUMPS ARE SO FUNNAY.” and “F+HHHHHHHHHHH.” When you play you seem to have a set goal in mind and you stick with that goal which is good I guess but it leads to repetitive and predictable play. You have to be able to alter your game plan depending on what the opponent is giving you. If you find yourself enjoying mixups, then practice them until it is second nature to you. So you apply them on the fly. You also can’t just walk into a game just knowing combos. You have to know what to punish, the restrictions of the other character you are fighting against, and how they can punish you. Having fundamentals are just as good as having good execution. If you can outsmart the other player by baiting counterhits then it’s better than only getting in one combo because you don’t know how to get in. Try and get the balance of knowing what to do and how to do it. Stop calling yourself free. You won’t get any better by just saying you suck. Take what you obviously know is wrong with your playstyle and work at it. Rome wasn’t built in a day. Real talk.
tl;dr - THINK. PLAY. WIN.
I know you’re referring to the guys whose seen you play before, but we share a few “play-style characteristics”. Which allowed me to start using “Rush-down/Brawler/Mixup Heavy” characters such as TaskMaster/Wesker in MvC3 and Cody in SSF4. I used to ask questions similar myself, I received some bogus and some really good tips.
But the best I’ve heard is, continue with what you know. But, also focus what causes you to lose. Which was lack of defense in my case. It’s been working for me on and off, but I know I need work on it.
Hit me up some time bro, I’m always eager to see play styles that share similarities to mine. Helps me learn how to rush down better. Eventually, I’ll get a chance to meet up with people with play styles that are different than mine. (For the lack of defense part)
Hopefully, this helped somewhat…
@GoogleMyName
I’m gonna sign up bro, I just wanna have everything set up first. May have a few extra heads from NY and Miami to join up.
You da best mayne, thanks for the honest advice. I’ll take yours to heart seeing as how I’ve probably played you more than anybody else ever anywhere lololol.
Thanks for the insight, I’ll keep that in mind. The facebook group people is telling me what I do wrong so I’ll take than into consideration and really really work on it. I’d love to play you sometime as well!!! You should come to one of the casual meetups soon!!!
We need to get super back at the next casuals meeting, too much marvel is gonna makes us suffer in the long run peeps, I think it’s time to let the hype go down a bit and have a balance between both games if possible.
@rafy
im glad you at least stopped whining about being free lol (since we all are scrubs anyway and can’t help you). props to you for asking for constructive feedback though  im sure you’ll have much better results from here on out with that mindset.
IMO you shouldn’t try to generalize players into categories so much. focus more on learning to read your opponent and adapt to their playstyle (i have a terrible habit of FAing excessively so people that use 2 hit normals and armor breakers will eat me alive). if you need to practice punishing something or don’t know how to counter it, use the record/playback feature in training mode and find a solution.
this ryu tutorial was really helpful when i first started playing:

this one is pretty neat too:

thanks to these vids, my goal is to have the most annoying sagat possible
Anyone up for some games (ssfiv)? I played TheDarkestHadou on XBL last night. Hes pretty good. He beat me. I rejoined his game then he kicked me tho. Haven’t played ssfiv in months so when I started today I was horrible. Got owned by ppl with like 1k pp. I’m back tho, competing with ppl around 3kpp.
Still getting the hang of akuma. I always was worse with him than ryu.
Only reason im playing ssfiv is bc of the way MvC 3 is…dont know for sure whats gonna happen with that. Less consistant than any other fighting game i’ve seen, and alot of ppl agree.
Sagat can’t zone at all in Super. Fireballs are slow, tiger knee has more recovery, and his dp isn’t threaten. This is why people moved on from him. But, if you like him then I guess more power to you.
James Chen booked his flight this morning for CEO. He will be our Main Commentator :).
I agree with Yaysian. After playing you for too long it’s obvious that you have a hard time actively thinking through the match. It isn’t all about knowing combos, it’s about the mind games that you need to play with your opponent and how you approach them. There are entire battles that go on without a single fancy combo in sight. You need to be able to “read” your opponent and have a general idea of what you want to do to get around their strategy. I know I’m basically recapping Yaysian’s points but I’m just reaffirming his assessment.
As for your particular play style, it cannot simply be categorized by your personality of play, a lot more factors go into play when trying to categorize something so broad. Your play style will always change if you are actively adapting to the fight. To give you a rough description of what your play style is like, it is reckless, random, and unrefined. You also tend to crack fairly easily under pressure and lose all sense of execution when that happens.
Some positive notes though are that you are completely new to fighting games in general and are doing really well for the amount of time you’ve been playing. Take into account how long some of the community players have been playing and realize how many times they’ve had to get their ass beaten just to get where they are today. Last but not least you are one of the most persistent players I’ve ever seen and always willing to learn. With that being said, you’re always my fighting buddy. No homo.
Wow, good stuff… Haven’t played him since he was big on X-Men Vs. Street Fighter, would be nice to give that game a run again…
Check the link below. New music from a local artist, which happens to be a friend of mine, named Notice. Check out his music, and leave a comment on his page, which is still under construction. Pez, I know you love real hip-hop. I think he fits the bill.

nsfw?
How was the WWE All Stars/Wrestlemania get-together? I was busy all weekend. Watched the documentary “The History Of Wresltemantia Vol. 1” which is available on Netflix Instant Queue, and is recent (just came out in 2010). Highly recommend it… good 2 hour viewing, especially if you are/were a wrestling fan.
I tried playing WWE All Stars online. Lmfao@lag. That shit is horrrrrrrrible online. And rage quitters like WHOA.
Holy crap, another Deltonian. We should get together for some sessions sometime. =p
I Kod 3 guys at once and eliminated them all at once, with one Finisher We all sat their in shock, it was hilarious and stream worthy.
I’m saving that shit for a tournament.
